Yax is a shining beacon in these dark times. You should all strive to be more like Yax.

Timmy was asking for it.

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

I'd rather have a system where we can self moderate our experience on Bungie.net.

I can say without a doubt that it will NOT go over well. Many users here would abuse that power for personal reasons.
He said "self-moderate our experience". In other words, it wouldn't affect anyone else.

I like the idea in theory, but that really wouldn't be practical. A lot of the point of the moderation is to keep everyone at a minimal exposure to rule breakages for their own safety and benefit.

So let's say we have little Timmy here on the site with his own toolkit of self-moderation which he can use to hide content he comes across that he doesn't like. He clicks on a shock-site link. Oh noes the horrors. And now little Timmy is scarred for life. I guess he should have known to hide that link before he clicked on it! But now he can remove it and all is well.

See the fundamental flaw with that idea? It's not even about the control/powers, it's about the exposure. The system Apoc's suggesting would be better suited as a Reddit-type interface, where you can arrange threads and posts based on what you want or don't want to see. It's more reactive than it is preventive, though, so that's the core issue with it. Better to send a few brave souls into the mix to deal with the horror than to get all the little Timmys in the world to deal with it for themselves.

Edit: Dang it, Papa. I guess that's karma ;)

Like I said before it would isolate users in the community and make them not want to come back becuase trolls won't be the only people censored.

Like who wants to post on a forum where people ignore you or you are hidden from everyone?

That's nice :p

I would just be worried where I or others could no longer contribute to the forums becuase a few people block what we say.

I frankly aggravates me that some people can't just not reply to a thread but have the nerve to want and block people off the site becuase they don't agree with their ideas and if enough people do it, what can you do on the forums?

You might as well be typing in a M$ word document to yourself becuase no one can see what you are saying and forums becomes pointless.

I just think that this feature is not needed, people just need to report threads, and it would divide the community.

Sure the report button can stay, auto-hide the post (like it does now) and then a moderator can judge if the post should be removed/user banned. But if I'm honest I've been on Bungie.net since 2004, I think I've clicked maybe maximum 10 shocksites in my time. I don't think it's a problem, maybe common sense? Maybe checking the thread first before clicking is something that should be done more. I personally don't see them as a problem, my proposal wouldn't stop them shocksite postings, nothing can. That's what the mods are there to deal with, with our help ofcourse. But being able to hide a user who has posted a shock link, would stop them from appearing again in another thread before the mods have banned him. And what tends to happen is if a user is being ignored, they will get bored and move somewhere else, or maybe start posting good content to get the right attention.

Posted by: spartain ken 15
You mean like hiding people's posts and censoring people?

I am 100% against that, it is kind of wrong. Sure it is good against the shock site trolls but when you hide other people, you hide their threads, their posts, etc.

It can make the forums very, isolated.

Like lets say many people censor my posts, no one responds to my thread, or to the point I can;t contribute to a discussion.

I won't want to come back and I would hate these forums.

And, I know come users *COUGH, would do that in spite.

Then the system clearly works as an effective tool against spammers. If no one sees your posts, no one responds. This will make you not want to use the site. Which will mean "Do Not Feed The Trolls" will be working.

In the past I would get banned for being an idiot. Now I only see myself getting banned because of other people being idiots, and I react.

I'm not going to beat around the bush here. I don't like spartain ken's contributions to the site. But we'll use him a for example. If I could hide him from my Bungie.net experience, I would have a more enjoyable time browsing the forums. Also I wouldn't get banned for reacting to his threads in a negative manner. This would lead to him having a more enjoyable time as well as other users who do not want to see me being rude to ken, yet want to see my posts on topics.

I think it'd be nicer if we had the ability to block certain users, although I feel that everyone would block ken for no good reason. This is why we can't have nice things.

Self moderation means you moderate yourself. Oh my god, reading comprehension is a much under appreciated skill.

Yes, but the idea ken is getting at is that everyone would block him if they had the ability, which I don't think is too far off the target.

But the point of blocking users is one-way. It just means that if they block you, then they can't see you, not that you can't see them.

So what would be the difference to your own experience? Well, it just means nobody would quote or reply to you, because you'd be hidden from sight. Though you'd still pop up in quotes, so it's a redundant discussion anyway.

So, the idea of isolation is a teensy bit flawed. I can go for days posting on this site and not be quoted or replied to once, so I don't really think it would be all that different.

Would be pretty good for a lot of lurkers, I guess.

O_O They can't moderate him. All he would be able to do is moderate himself. What other people would do is irrelevant, as what they would do would only affect themselves. Nobody would be able to block ken.

That is almost worst TBH, why wouldn't I want to see everyone's posts. I know some people say things I don't agree with but if I don't read and understand their points, how can I respond or stay up with the topic?

  • 12.11.2011 8:30 AM PDT

I spend too much time here.. too much time indeed.

I tweet?

I've actually created a thread or two around the basis of an idea similar to what ApocalypeX's idea of being able to self moderate. The man complaint is always the same, people are worried that they'll be ignored or blocked and that it will somehow inhibit discussion on the forums. Well most forums already have a block/ignore user option, so I don't see much of a difference besides gaining the option to hide individual posts and/or threads rather than users. If anything a most customizable way to avoid unwanted/undesirable content would only increase the user experience in the forums and promote more activity.

Now, carry on.

A lot of people struggle with self-control. As Apoc previously stated, he wants it because he lives in fear of getting angry at something you've said, reacting, and being subsequently banned. That's why, really.

Well, I live in fear of having a large number of people block what I say and I can't participate in forum discussions anymore.

Not trying to sound mean (not directed at Apoc, at everyone), but a ban should teach someone a lesson and they should learn from that, I have learned from bans and I try and better myself on the forums. Bans help reinforce that restraint.

This entire idea to block people seems trivial and as you have said is ONLY suggested to Block me which is why I feel it is wrong becuase it already sounds like it WILL BE ABUSED for personal reasons.

Yes; I see where you are coming from. People would no doubt block ken simply because they are jackasses and cannot prevent themselves from being rude to him. Honestly, Apoc, if you can't just ignore ken manually, then clearly you deserve the ban.
