Have you seen my mind anywhere? I seem to have lost it...

The Bungie.net groups have been quiet lately. This is not much of a surprise, considering that the rest of the site has also been quiet. Group admins are left hoping that once Bungie reveals their next project they will be able to recruit from the hordes of new members to the site.

This is where they run into a problem, they have to attract the new members. They can either start a time consuming (and with the spam filter, narrow scoped) PM campaign sending out group invites cluttering people's mailboxes, or they can post an ad in the classifieds. Classified ads are nice, but they soon fall off the first page, never to be seen again.

The new member looking for a group will also have a problem. When they are trying to join a group they have to either wait for an invite or look in the classifieds (Searching only works if you know the name or some other information). Getting a message is unreliable, since you have to be lucky enough to land on the invite list for the group that's actually focused on what you want to do. If they look in the classifieds they have to show up when a group that they want to find has an ad.

What should be done to make the recruitment-finding process easier for both parties is to create a registry of Bungie.net groups. The OP would be a list of groups, divided into categories (General discussion, gaming, etc.). Any group that wanted to could have its name and a short description added to the post.

This allows groups to have a permanent ad in the classifieds, and gives new (and old) users a one stop shop for finding groups.

That'd be a fun thread to make.

Best of random chance

I think the Classifieds will work fine, I don't see the need for anything else.

When he was younger, he was the one who always had the jokes and riddles that would keep the spirits of the Spartans high. Over the years however, his lifetime of combat had hardened him, as it had all of the Spartans. Within Will, John thought, something special had been lost.

Glad to see someone else interested in doing this.
We were just talking about this yesterday, but making a group dedicated to it. Making a thread worthy of sticky'ing also crossed my mind. Duardo's info threads are a really good example of how that could be implemented.

This is exactly what I was thinking, I would make the thread, as long as I knew it wouldn't be locked.

Bungie.Match.com: Our Johnson knows what the ladies like.

That's pretty ingenious.

It's a good idea in theory, not so much in practice.

Using the [existing] forum system for something like this is ineffective as it will only include the groups that they know of (ie. not all groups that exist), and is inefficient because it would be incredibly difficult to manage a huge list like that - slow.

  • gamertag: [none]
  • user homepage:

Do you have what it takes to become a ninja? Join Ninja Academy
Prepared to learn the way of the jedi? Join
KOTOR

I would like a group list based on activity, a weekly group spotlight, and more features for groups.

While it would be slow, it would be more effective than the current system. Since any group that wanted to advertise could post in the thread it would get added to the list. This minimizes the drawback from the list's incompleteness because, instead of one user adding all of the groups that they know of it would be an open list.

One way to keep the list concise would be to put a time limit on the ad. The OP could create a spreadsheet with the date that an ad was posted and remove it after a set amount of time (2 months for example). Time consuming, yes, but also doable.

This would be cool, but it would require the webteam to implement.

I've tried creating a speadsheet with the community in the past; it didn't work out. I've also tried using the location as a way to tag your group; it wasn't used that much. I'm creating a website with the community that will focus on the 7th Column, but it might not be available anytime soon. For now, I would suggest checking out http://bungie.me, which includes group spotlight and much more.
