Does anyone else find that whoever pulls host in this game can make it far worse than any other Halo game? I'm talking in terms of general lag, poor bullet reg., grenade lag etc.

Last night I played a constat of UK or West Coast (California) host and my god was it terrible. Thing is, I remember Halo 3 being crappy online, but not that bad. Same goes for Halo 2, unless I was being held in blue screen.

Regardless, do you find in Reach host affects more than it did in previous titles?

It was way worse in Halo 2 becaus the speed we have now dident exist back then. But yes Reach dose select poor host so many times that it's insane for a game in 2011.

Hmm, maybe. I sure as hell remember being able to play on my west coast friends host and actually enjoy the game.

I'm definitely starting to notice that the host is either good or awful. There's hardly any in-between. More often than not it's a bad host, and it's getting annoying.

Name's John. I'm a 21-year-old firefighter/EMT from lolhio who doubles as a die-hard Halo fan. I've been enjoying the franchise since 2001. My favorite iteration of Halo would have to be Halo 2 simply because I never got to experience the joy of a full-on Halo: CE LAN.

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.

Oh yeah, and boot Zome.

This. Having your shots eaten like it's honey-roasted turkey on Thanksgiving every other game is certainly getting old. I feel like it's been like this ever since 343i took over. I never noticed it this badly when Bungie was at the helm.

I don't think the switch really had that much to do with it, seeing as host is P2P. I've been playing ZB customs before the MLG playlist was updated. Not even ZB can stop online warriors. In short, its kind of annyoing that host can pretty much make or break the game.

Go back and play h3 right now, and get matched with a foreign host. Have fun not having anything hurt them period, and getting spawn-killed because they just see you standing there like a moron for 10 seconds.

h2 and reach at least have hit-scan to counteract the lag, although the h2 hit-scan was ridiculously OP with sweeping.

I've never seen it be that bad in Reach. There's the very very occasional game where you see things moving by themselves and invisible enemies, but it showed up far far far more frequently in h2 and 3.

I'm sorry, but you must really not have played much h2 or h3.

I played plenty of both.

What I'm saying is, I've never had this many problems in terms of people eating shots. Foreign host=/= west coast. I have 5 friends from Cali and Seattle, who I've played with since Halo 2. I'm use to playing on their host, its just in Reach I find that people are online warriors more than ever.

...so, you think a hitscan game (bullets hit the person on their screen, even if they/host see you looking/shooting a different direction) drops more shots than an active projectile in h3, where even if you see your bullets hit them, it doesn't hurt them if they weren't in that exact place on their screen... go back and play it, you really have no clue.

The only time bullets won't connect in Reach is if you didn't shoot them, or if an object got in the bullet's path on the host's screen. Assuming hit-scan weapons, and not something like a needler of course.

Bullet registration on Reach, even on a bad host, is much better than it was on Halo 3. I just played a game against people from Switzerland. It was bad connection but I could at least still out DMR them

No. Perhaps I'm wording it wrong, or even I'm just way to tired to explain it. For example, I played a game that was on my friends host. His host for me, is terrible. People eat shots, the game delays in prompting text/medals. I get a double kill doesn't say it for about 4 seconds after. I can shoot someone 6 times, and their sheild won't pop. I've gone into theater and looked at it, seen the bullts connct to the body/head and counted. I know Halo 3 has crap reg. overall, especially if the host was crap. I just find that it never really played that much of a detrimental role in my games, as opposed to Reach. Where my DMR bullets won't connect at all depending on the host. The bullets hit, but they don't count.

I.E. Bloodshots.

On a side note, it could also be the amount of time Its been since I've played 2/3 distorting my image of those two.

I can play on a yellow bar in Reach. Red bar is when everything stops functioning properly.

It's not true hitscan in reach (it seems more of a mix between h2 hitscan and the h3 bullets), so it would give you bloodshots like you said, but a game laggy enough to do that occurs so very infrequently in random match-ups compared to h3, unless I'm just super-lucky. If you're forcing it to keep you in a game with someone you connect to that badly, that explains more than I thought, and I can completely see where you're coming from.

Your solution, unfortunately, is to play with other people or by yourself, the best networking model in a game can't fix that most countries run connection through copper at some point, or any of the other problems with the internet itself.

Seconding this statement^

I'm in the UK and I find the quality of host pretty inconsistent: sometimes when I'm up against US players it takes a ridiculous number of shots to pop shields, but other times I can be in a game with American or even Brazilian players and the game is absolutely fine. In the past I tried searching with "good connection" as a priority but that gave pretty mixed results.

  • 12.11.2011 9:22 AM PDT

Tis what happens when the number of people playing the game drops. When the casuals played, you'd see a lot more people around the country/world playing so host selection usually wasn't bad. Now that everybody switched to CoD, the limited selection results in poorer hosts.

  • 12.11.2011 9:25 AM PDT

I completely agree with you. I play a lot of arena and sometimes I find I just 5 shot everything that moves and then other times players can just take my bullets, even when they're 1 shot. I honestly feel like I just win depending on how the connection feels at the time. And it sucks

  • 12.11.2011 10:48 AM PDT

Ya dude, bad host in this game is at least as bad as it was in H3. What makes it worse is the single-shot DMR, because you have to be so precise... Also in H3 kids had to eat three bullets per shot, now they only have to eat one bullet per shot.

Life is a journey, if you spend all of it with your nose in your map, you may miss some of the best parts.

In MLG, a foreign host can make a difference. I played with so many foreign people last night, it wasn't even funny. I got annoyed.

The 343 forums suck. They're full of retarded kids and mods who got butthurt in the B.net forums for being told that they're bad.

How about having a black screen for five minutes whenever anybody quits? So many times in BTB we have more time spent in black screen than actually playing because every single person that quits on the other team triggers a host selection.

I've also had some games where everything registers a full second after it happened. I shoot someone who is no-shield in the head and stop shooting. He shoots two times after my shot and then he dies from that shot. Frustrating as hell.
