Subject: Ignore feature

Since it was pretty interesting to read, I'd like to fork the discussion being had in this thread on the topic of "self-moderation" through the use of filtering tools, such as an ignore user feature.

I'm in support of a feature like this, and have been for quite a while, even before starting to moderate. See, I noticed that there were users who cluttered up the forum by constantly posting the same mindless drivel, but there wasn't anything I could do about it except do my best to ignore it, which is sometimes difficult when it's so prevalent.

The problem was occasionally worse when what these users were posting I considered to be spam, yet the moderators didn't agree or there were mitigating circumstances that didn't necessitate a blacklist (which removes the content, albeit temporarily), or it took a long amount of time for a moderator to see the offending content and take action.

The point is, realistically, moderators are the only users capable of removing content from the forums, and that sucks for regular users with no equivalent tool. You have no way of removing things that anger or annoy you; you need to hope that someone else can and will do it for you, and do it within some kind of internally acceptable frame of time that only you yourself can and will determine. Now, speaking as a moderator, this kind of problem isn't so bad, since sometimes it's actual rule-breaking stuff that I can get rid of, but only because I have the tools to do it. Again, you guys don't, and that's why it's an issue that I still acknowledge and am trying to find good solutions for. It just so happens that this is one of them.

So, three main points here:

- People post annoying crap
- You have no way to remove it
- You have to rely on a moderators decision which may or may not result in the content being removed (via blacklist), that decision may not be quick enough, and it may not be what you were hoping for

"I will show you how a true Prussian officer fights!"

"And i will show you where the iron crosses grow..."

- "Cross of Iron"

I agree an ignore feature would be nice.

I find it easy enough to ignore people with the power of my mind.

I could get behind a feature like this. I don't see any reason not to implement it.

Have you seen my mind anywhere? I seem to have lost it...

0x0 x0x 0x0 000 000 x0x 000
x0x 0x0 0x0 0xx 000 0x0 000
x0x x0x x00 0xx 0x0 x0x 0x0

I have seen you future

I would like an ignore post feature (like if the report button hid the post for me as well as adding it to the queue). The problem with an ignore user feature is that if I notice a new user post something dumb the first time I see them, they would get hidden, but then their next post could be the most brilliant thing I have (n)ever read.

Report-hiding individual posts would also make the report button be used more because the reporting user would have a tangible result of their actions.

There is a user or two I'd like to block all visual recognition of.

I disagree with the ability to ignore a user all together. What if you get the chance to temporarily ignore a user after you report one of their posts?

The user is completely ignored for 2 months or until a moderator can deal with the reported user.

Valid point. Do you think this would lead to abuse of the feature? Swamping Mods with report messages might not be the best route. Maybe have a secondary option for post removal?

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

The reason I disagreed with it in that thread was becuase people wanted it for personal reasons to silence "certain" forum users becuase they disagree with their ideas.

I like how mods are the only people who can remove content and block users becuase I can see it causing problems.

I would much like a collapse feature.

See that down arrow all the way to the right of my title bar?

It could use an up arrow next to it that gave the options to report the post, to collapse just the post you click on, or all posts by this user.

And then they'd just look like an automatically-collapsed post, except with a name on it somewhere. The report option would not collapse the post- those functions should be kept separate.

The primary reason for its placement on the title bar is so that you don't have to scroll all the way down the wall of "JOHNCENA" copy-pasted to block it.

Case and point: don't worry about it. Girls start getting boobies pretty soon, and then you'll have plenty of other things to think about. Being an Inheritor is not a life goal.

Pretty much. I'm counting on the Webteam for this the next time they update the site; because honestly, it's gone from bad, to rock bottom. There are no disadvantages from "ignoring" certain users; it's definitely a requested feature we've been all campaigning about for ages.

I really like this feature. Localized to your system and clean. What's not to like?

I think people need to learn self control. If you see a thread by a user you don't like, don't post in it. I think it is simple.

But if you are in a discussion thread and you are blocked from users yet have valid points, your points go ignored and participation in threads becomes less and less fun. :/

I know that some people want this to target certain users (like myself apparently seeing that thread). And let me tell you, if a ton of people blocked me and my threads kept getting no replies and I wasn't acknowledged on the forums, I would start hating Bungie.net.

I too posted a similar idea some time ago, it was met with disapproval for the most part. I still like the idea of having a few tools for self moderating.

An option to temporally ignore someone would be useful to remove seeing rule breaking post and help people in the Flood stop noticing and pointing out those meatspin spam walls. But then some people will probably just ignore users they don't like whether or not they broke the rules.

Not to mention that people change, especially with the age group we usually have here at the B.net.

It's hard to ignore posts or threads from a user when you see the same rubbish from them every day. An ignore feature is perfect.

But if you are in a discussion thread and you are blocked from users yet have valid points, your points go ignored and participation in threads becomes less and less fun. :/If someone is becoming blocked by the masses consistently, perhaps that's a reflection upon oneself to take into consideration their posting habits and why it causes people to block someone. People have a right to block one another if they see fit - if they don't want to see someone's "valid points," then they don't have to, and they shouldn't be forced to.

Yep, sometimes people make a bad thread (I do sometimes :/). But does that mean I should be shunned forever? I hate getting shunned.

While I have become quite good at ignoring posts that I don't like there are times when I just don't want to see them. Mostly spam, flame, and troll posts in an otherwise very productive thread.

You can't teach everyone self control, but you can give them the tools to help them coup with their problems. If people can just remove what they don't like that gives them a better user experience, if they don't like you or what you have to say to begin with it shouldn't matter if they have you on ignore they're not going to interact with you anyway. Or if they did it'd just be some sort of personal attack.

As for people changing, sure, and maybe the person who blocked you will change too and give you a second shot.

Your not forced to do anything, you don't have to respond to anyone. But "shunning" them from the forums is a tad extreme.

That's why I think that you should only be able to ignore a user when you report them and that the ignore should only last until a moderator looks at the post or 2 months pass.

Why exactly is this a bad thing? They're still going to ignore the person anyway. They could go to another thread, another forum, site, or turn their computer off. The only difference is that the content is gone from their view and hence, the user's experience is enhanced.
