"If you treat people right, they will treat you right - ninety percent of the time."

"No soldier should be honored for doing what is expected."

Is that why we have flame wars in The Flood?

Not everyone is capable of ignoring posts they don't like.

No, you can ignore them without having an "ignore feature."

Achronos

Joe Staten

If I remember correctly, Achronos has always wanted something like this in the site. He talked about a filtering system that allows you to only see things you are interested in. I would love to have a tool like this.

I know who'd be the first in my ignore list.

Does anyone know of a forum that has a simmilar feature? It'd probably be good to check it out.

I'm all for the ability to content filter. I think its an excellent way of allowing the individual user to moderate their own experience and improve their use of the site with no real negatives.

People already interact with those they like and ignore those they don't. Simply giving them the tools to allow them to only see the positive content they're interested in doesn't create any negatives since individuals won't know whether or not their content is being ignored.

It is only outright ignored if all child content is ignored as a consequence. There is no way to detemine whether content is worth ignoring until you've actually read it. We're not talking about filtering -blam!- content, we're talking about filtering people.

Honestly.

Eh. I think it's good to view everyone's posts, no matter how consistently stupid they are.

And if it's spam or the like I can just hit the report button, do what bread said, and then wait for a moderator to swing into action.

Hold it right there.

Hello. Name's Brian. Look, if you're looking for a flame war with me, just open up the Flood and write up some not-nice things about religion and I'll bring my nukes to the party.

If you want some other way to contact me, you can forget it.

If you're interested in some of my work, you can check my homepage out.

I'm just afraid this would harm the sake of discussions. For example, if an ignored user joins in on the thread, whatever he puts in the discussion will be ignored by me but not by others, so when everyone else is replying to him, I can't help but notice something amiss.

There are some people who I've honestly never seen make a legitimately interesting or slightly good-content-filled comment. Those are the kinds of people I would ignore.

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

Yep, it can break apart discussions is several people ignoring each other post.

You can ignore them now. Removing their content from the page serves no purpose other than to break the flow of discussion.

I suppose you're correct. But, at the very least, the ability to manually collapse posts would be nice. Not sure if you've addressed that in one of your other posts (assuming you've made more than the two I've quoted), but if that, at the very least was included in the next iteration of Bungie.net, I'd be content.

I'd be content if it wasn't. It's not that big of a deal. But I'd be content (even more so) if it was included.

Thesaurus.com

I had a thought:

How about when someone makes a thread (or maybe even a post...?), they have the ability to put an icon next to it that dictates the type of discussion within? Such as an icon for "Serious" topics and an icon for "Not Serious" topics. I'd much rather be able to ignore crap threads full of spam and popularity contests than being able to ignore specific posts, considering the types of posts that I want to ignore often happen in those types of threads (created by the OP or through derailment). There would be no fragmentation of discussion in threads due to the ignore feature. (though actual discussion outside of trying to appear "In" rarely occurs.)

I'm with Sken and elmicker on this one. The person that I was when I first came to Bungie.net is very different from the person I am now. Originally I was a bit of a Halo 3 fanboy, and I found myself trying to defend the game from all the "trolls" in the Halo 3 forum. If I had the opportunity to censor all those people who were "stupid" and "bashing my game" I would never have matured as a member. I would just be deluding myself with a Fantasy in which everybody agreed with me.

That's not a community. It's a False Utopia.

So, three main points here:

- People post annoying crap
- You have no way to remove it
- You have to rely on a moderators decision which may or may not result in the content being removed (via blacklist), that decision may not be quick enough, and it may not be what you were hoping for
When a user is ignored, should their posts be collapsed by default or removed from viewing completely?

I agree, people don't want this to deal with trolls, they want isolate members of the community and only who agree with them. Any counter arguments or good discussion will cease. It is like we are treating fellow users as second class members.

Not going to disagree there.

Spread the love...

The idea works pretty well, but it could cause some confusion.

For example, 1 posts something. 2 replies to 1. 3 has ignored 1 but not ignored 2. 3 only sees 2's response, and he'll wonder what 2 is responding too.

It might take some time to register the statement above, but once you do you'll know what I mean. It could get confusing if large number's of people ignore other people.

that sucks for regular users with no equivalent tool. You have no way of removing things that anger or annoy you
This is why I don't like how community members being nominated as Forum Ninjas. They think that they're the law now. No OP, you can't do that just because you find something annoying. That's you're opinion to what you think is annoying. Other people could see it as something that's not annoying. If it's spam, then I understand.
I see you as the kid who, if they had it their own way, would report every opinion you thought to be stupid. If it were like that, these forums would be terrible, because someone like you would probably report or (if your wish came true) ignore everyone you, in your opinion, find posting annoying crap
I really think you shouldn't be a forum ninja.

Edit: You'd ignore this too wouldn't you? (Rhetorical)
