Subject: Why is "this" word in the profanity filter?

The G word, meaning "not straight", I'm not going to bypass it because Ill be risking a ban, but why is it censored? It isn't a bad word, though its used as one by hateful people, but blocking it is like slapping non-heteros in the face. I may be wrong on that, but mainly, why is it blocked?

Case and point: don't worry about it. Girls start getting boobies pretty soon, and then you'll have plenty of other things to think about. Being an Inheritor is not a life goal.

So people couldn't use it in a derogatory manner to offend anyone.
There was a huge discussion about this a few months ago. Pretty much everyone agrees that it should be censored.

I'm a college dropout.

Because the filter system is old and blah blah blah it needs to be updated and blah blah blah it's not an accurate representation of what words bnet actually wants filtered blah blah.

There was a big thing about it a while ago. I don't even like to remember how persistent the OP was.

  • 12.13.2011 5:18 PM PDT

Because it would be used as a derogatory term. And that's not nice.

It is probably filtered because people use it often in a hateful/spiteful way.

Granola.

Nope, we're good.

OT: I think it prevents it being used in the colloquial, connoted, immature, offensive manner and enables the site to avoid crashing down on political and social threads pertaining to the "G word"

"So- So this means Im just going to be miserable for the rest of time?!"

"No. This means that you have to live life to the fullest. You have one life, live it well. Make sure you die without regrets. Get a new life, new mate, new family. You, out of all people, don't deserve a terrible fate of misery like that. Having nothing to look forward to is good. It makes sure you want to keep on going. Living is a right, not a privilege."

Well, for non-deregatory uses could we use, sorry mods, ghey instead?

You don't need it to be uncensored for that to happen. Check the flood, a hot topic each day comes around because of "G" issues.

Key

When's the last time you tried to use the word -blam!- to refer to something joyous or happy and was censored? It's almost always used to refer to someone's orientation. And Bungie doesn't want people talking about that (or they would have removed it from MS's list).

People mainly use it as a negative word. As you can imagine, it's not only hurtful for the recipient of the message, but also hurtful to those that are described by the word.

You might ask: Well, what if someone wants to use it just to actually describe someone?
In return, I'd say: Why would you want to bring such subject up on a game designers forum for discussion?

Not all swear words are censored. Words that are censored include "sex," "prick," "dick," "vag," "nuts," "balls," "ass," "butt hole" (but when combined together: -blam!-), "titties," "tits," and "boobs". None of them can be used in civil discussion, yet they're not censored. Cry about it.

Also, Achronos has voiced his opinion on this several times:

The profanity filter is not intended to catch every possible variation of your average troll's weak attempts at real profanity. Rather, it enforces a general tone that, if violated, should be reported and dealt with as the moderators see fit.

Censorship is not the aim, forcing you to form a thought without basic playground profanity is.

Okay, as long as you guys promise to act like intelligent adults.

Of course, if you promise that, you'd be liars.

"Mature 17+" describes the content of the game, not the maturity level of those that partake of that content. Witness 25 year olds on Xbox Live acting like spoiled children if things don't go their way.

I don't think that there should be a -blam!- filter.

While the Bungie games don't use curse words, Halo is a mature rated game and its community should be treated as a +17 community.

Exactly, he doesn't want to because it would be extremely tedious. There's been threads where things have been censored that would have been perfectly fine in context.

"The list can be easily changed if I cared to do so. I don't care to at this time." "I don't care to at this time." sort of implies that there are some things that probably be changed, but he doesn't view it as a big enough issue to change it. The entire point of my post was to state that there are some stupid parts with the filter, and the webteam already knows this.

  • 12.13.2011 5:33 PM PDT

Why has this thread suddenly become a Tourettes Guy video?

  • 12.13.2011 5:36 PM PDT

The word is used probably 99.9% of the time to insult someone.

And that's a no-no.

Not sure if sarcasm.

I don't doubt that some words may be cut from the list and others will be added.

Meh, he said some -blam!- about "fragile code" and "too busy to change it right now" or "not worth it" and then left.
