Subject: Why was Halo 2 so popular?

Posted by: Wilis_kid
Personally, I think it's because the game was just fun. I've had the most fun with the original Halo and Halo 2 back in the day. That said, Halo 2's multiplayer didn't take skill because of the large hitboxes and aim assist but it did have something that the other Halo's failed to capture in my opinion, fun.
Yeah, I get tired of that one. All games take skill to be better than the next guy, you just have to adapt to what skills are needed for each game.

When H2 came out on Live, all were subjected to the same criteria. If the noobs could suddenly kill you, then you just had to find other tactics in order to widen the skill gap again. The people who could not adapt still whine to this day. Suddenly, the pistol was not god overall...skill was still needed, just in a different way.

Speed, agility and tactics came into play more than jump jump shoot with pistol ever did, for me anyway.

H2 takes skill to be better than the next guy playing the same game and so did CE. You cannot compare skill to play one game to the skill to play another game...different skills for different games.

Scenario 1; Man walks into bank and pulls a gun to rob the noobs but all the noobs have guns. They are not very good so the robber easily kills them all, bounch bounce...shoot with pistol. The skill gap in that robbery was the robbers skill verses the noob skills.

Scenario 2; Man walks into bank and pulls a gun to rob the noobs but all the noobs have guns that make it easier for the noobs to kill the robber. Suddenly, the robber has to use different tactics than before, he has to hide, come out fast and shoot and duck behind cover. However, the robber also has a gun that makes it easier for him to shoot the noobs. The robber just has to adapt to new tactics in order to win. The skill gap in that robbery was the robbers skill verses the noob skill (same as first robbery}.

So my opinion is you cannot compare skill from game to game because it depends upon who you are playing against. To say H2 takes less skill than CE to play is not relative and has no basis in fact. The only way to compare skills in one game verses another game would be to put an H2 player in a CE game and that cannot be done.

What it gets down to is which game is more fun, the skill it takes to win at CE or the skill it takes to win at H2. Both take skill, just different kinds of skill.

I agree with what you're saying, however I do think Halo 2 is one of the easier games to be good at. I found it quite easy to beat alot of players although I had no idea how to do the button combo's which dominated the later part of Halo 2's life.

In terms of competitiveness, I think Halo 2 does hold a players hand alot which is why I think it doesn't take skill, you just need to be able to aim in the rough direction and you'll be fine. But what did take skill was the tricking players have been able to do.

Your argument about putting a H2 player in a CE game is fair, but in terms of game mechanics, Halo 2 assists the player more than the other games. At least, that's what it looks and feels like.

Seems that I forgot to vote on this.

I can't speak for why this game was so popular for so many people, but for me it's because it's simply fun. No other Halo gives me as much as Halo 2 does when just messing around. All the glitches like super bounces give it an AMAZING fun factor.

Well, it's a matter of opinion, if a game assists the noobs and also assists the better players, seems to be a trade-off to me and does not define skill in and of itself. So to me it always gets down to the competition and how well you play against them. A really good player with excellent skills could get his ass handed to him if the competition is also skillful, no matter the assists.

I just can't get behind the notion of 'it takes more skill to play CE than to play H2' by simply pointing out the hitbox thing. To me you cannot compare the two, different games with different skills needed. That's just my opinion.

The hitboxes make it easier for newer players because they've got more of a target to hit. That said, players who are good at fps games in a competition it would take skill there, but then there are instances thanks to the hitboxes where you would miss a shot but it'd still hit. However as it's a level playing field i guess your argument comes into play.

I respect your opinion Grumpy

I respect yours as well, and for you, it does take less skill to play H2 than CE so you are right from your point of view. For me, I just don't know because I just can't compare the 2 in my own head.

None of the Halo games were really brought out to their full potential on the competitive side. Reason being that if you have a completely competitive game you won't get many newcomers. In the console market, there is much more to be gained from allowing a game to be new user friendly than it would be to make the most skilled game it could be. Business wise that made absolute sense for Bungie to do.

That's why I've always said that I enjoy the Halo titles as casual games. (Meaning I played them purely for fun, not competitively) Being someone that enjoys playing games purely for fun, Halo is my favorite gaming franchise.

I'm not so sure on the competitive side, mainly because i'm not a fan of MLG and the few i've played don't seem to be all that great (however there is a huge number i've seen on YT that are very good) but when i was speaking about competitiveness...i meant as in PVP everyday matches, sort of like Halo PC etc xD

Oh I know. That's what I meant to. I hold competitive gaming to very high standards. If I'm going to take a game seriously competitive it has to be to its full potential. That's why I'm only interested in things like Tribes, Quake, and Counter-Strike when it comes to competitive gaming. Every other game I couldn't care less what my stats were. xD

I do occasionally play the Halo games competitively. If someone requests it of me I will. It's extremely rare, though. The only game I even have record of me playing competitive on any of the Halos is this. That's just because my friend really wanted to win the match for some reason. xD

Every other time you find me on Halo you'll see me riding on my friend's Wraith screaming "ONWARD, MY STEED!" or, at the end of the match shouting "10 seconds left, better kill myself!" when the game is tied. Oh how everyone loves me...
