So in a game of Reach, if my internet is bad, will I pull host? Just wondering how it works.

I don't know. The game might not be a fan of arab host.

I think it goes by how stable your host is and not really how good it is.

So basically... Waypoint is pro-vanilla?

Waypoint isn't pro-anything so much as they're just anti-intelligence.

Probably, 343 seems to select host based on someone being in a different country from all of the other players in the match.

In Reach? Yes, a bad connection = host.

When I'm on 10+mbps down and 3+mbps up I either don't pull host or if I do, it's only for a few seconds.

When I'm capped and on 64kbps up/down I pull host and keep it for the entire game.

Also, another way to guarantee you pull host is to quit a lot as well, this game loves giving host to quitters.

In Halo Reach, the game looks in for the following things:
- NAT, which players can connect to all other players.
- Ping, which players have the lowest average ping to all other players.
- Stability, which players have the most stable internet. Stable meaning little to no packet loss with minimal jitter.
- Bandwidth, which players have the required bandwidth to host the game.

A player is then selected as the host based off the above items. Games that are unplayable due to lag are most likely a result of some players NAT settings, in which, some players were not able to connect to others. This is why it is important to have an open NAT.

I know exactly what you mean. I run on about 20ish mbps down and 17ish up and pull host once every 50 or so games. But as soon as both my roommates get home and start hogging all the bandwidth, I get host every game and it lags like no other.

Also, another way to guarantee you pull host is to quit a lot as well, this game loves giving host to quitters.

This. Every time someone quits from a game, it seems to give host to the person most likely to quit next.

Underlined the incorrect part. This is how it should be, however it is not. That's why you'll often find in a game with 14 Australians and 2 Americans, one of the Americans will pull host despite them obviously having the highest average ping when considering other players connecting to their Xbox.

It's a shame, really.

Its about host record, If you pull host with people who you give over 200 ping to constantly, this will drop your host record, not by alot.

But for example in Halo 3 Its all about the host record and even if you have 100mbit up and 100mbit down with 3ms to nexthop, if you host a game and just one person in the game has crap internet or is downloading while playing or even has graphics card lag, these will force them to dropred dot connection and will make the game go red dot.
although no body will notice this unless they are watching the connection bars, this is what ruins host records.

So its quite simple, get a bunch of friends who dont pull host and just start searching and once your in a game spam speedtests on your computer, this will drop the game red dot and ruin peoples host records. This doesnt work in reach tho =\
It will still ruin peoples host records in reach but you being red dot wont drop it red dot for everyone i believe. This is kinda sad and pointless in halo reach. but in halo 3 it can even force a host change :D

A way to tell if you have a good host record is to see if when you pull host the connection starts off orange / yellow bar. If it does in halo 3 or reach your host record is bad. You can also press start > network details or something... > and look for upstream bandwidth. if it says good it means your host record is good. It might say warning! even if you have 100mbit upload its just your host record is bad for multiple reasons. And ping, bandwidth have little to do with pulling host if your american, host record doesnt record your ping and bandwidth, it records stability.

But ofcourse more bandwidth and lower ping is vital for a good host, I'm saying the host record system is flawed since it cant really tell the difference between 50mbit up and 500kb up.

And btw for notice, i see this in alot of forums - bridging is not against bungie, 343, microsoft, anything's rules and will not give you a ban or host ban. So If you want to pull host either get a new xbox with a fresh host record and play big team games if you can handle it, or get someone to bridge you and 'boost' your host record. You cant get your host record better if you dont pull host.

Forget it man, and get with the countdown. Shake this square world and blast off for Kicksville.

Reach host ranking algorithm: (a*quit_percentage + b*isMexican + c*(1/KDR) + d*hasGuest) * 100
where a > b = d > c

In Halo Reach, the game looks in for the following things:

You forgot the host record, which is a major part of how selection is determined.

Games that are unplayable due to lag are most likely a result of some players NAT settings, in which, some players were not able to connect to others. This is why it is important to have an open NAT.
This part is erroneous. NAT has no effect on "lag".

Buy a new xbox and you will pull host. At least for a couple days.

Yes you will, this is basically how host works
Foreign > bad > good > Full parties
