For me, the fiction drives the series. Not the gameplay.
Unfortunate you thought that way with Bungie around, because they seemed to hate expanding the game series alongside the novels.
The games never caught up with the books and what they cooked up; it divided the fanbase and set up false hopes, and gripes for when your hopes are not entertained; i.e., not receiving a game which you play as the Covenant or Forerunners, etc.
So you have a group of fans, people like grey, and Quan, who are alienated because they're Halo gurus, and they expect their experience with the novels to be translated into the games.
The books are setting up an amazing feeling that the games never reach.
I think that if the novels are to expand on the universe, then so should the games at the same pace. The game series had stayed still, but I believe we may have Bungie to thank for that.
I'm not sure if these opinions of mine are consistent with my past opinions, but whatever, this is what I think now.
Now that we have 343 in charge, they're sure to catch the games up with the novels in no time.
Still, that doesn't change the fact that Halo 4 is a direct sequel to Halo 3, and therefore requires elements that make it consistent with that trilogy. It won't be "rehashed" or "milking" if 343 is good enough to refine and refresh everything, and I think they are.
If it were a game about the Forerunners vs. Whoever-- pbbbff, the UNSC can go -blam!- itself for all I care.
I agree with the 343i statement. So far they seemed to have respected book canon, at least some parts of it, especially the 9th CEA terminal.
