Uhm, what?

Being tortured doesn't make you less of a badass, for one. For two, he obviously survived the torture which makes him even more badass that he could withstand all that. Three, there are plenty of heroes in the U.S. Military who have been tortured and I have an immense amount of respect for them for going through it all. It's the complete opposite from what you're saying. If anything it makes them waaay more badass.

Yeah, torture in no way makes you less of a badass, if you survive to be rescued or break yourself out then that can make you even more of one.
Especially with those who just refuse to break under whatever torture they're under-going, which is exactly how I would see Chief, or any Spartan really, responding to it, refusal to break under any circumstances. And if they're a BAMF like Johnson they'll respond to their torturer with witty and sarcastic comments almost the whole while.

But yeah, being tortured certainly doesn't make you any less badass. In fact, sometimes it can make a normally not very badass character very badass. For example, in the TV show Firefly, at one point Mal and Wash are being brutally tortured and Wash isn't a fighter or anything really, he's just the pilot of the ship and in comparison to Mal is rather weak physically (he's certainly not cut out for torture), yet right after Wash is rescued, he goes right back with the rest of the ships crew on an armed assault on the bad guy's space station...and he's one of the ones leading the charge.
Or in Mal's case, he was already a badass, and he shows just how badass he is throughout the whole torture session, not only does he keep Wash from breaking, but even after he gets his ear cut off, temporarily killed, and shocked with electricity for several hours on end, he responds with sarcastic and biting remarks throughout the whole session. And then the minute he's free he starts beating on the guy who'd been torturing him!

Being tortured to a level where Chief is still even capable of making witty comebacks and retorts at his torturers, like Johnson in Halo 3 where he was getting slapped around by brute chieftains, is not quite enough for my ideas.

I am implying that he should feel pain until he is reduced to the level where he openly doubts himself (at least to cortana, as eragon did to saphira) and really feels as though he is about to give in and cannot take it anymore, where he might even do anything to escape.

I wouldn't mind seeing that at all. Good reference, by the way. I loved the first Eragon book (I read half of Eldest (I think I remember that quote you put in the OP too) but got bored of it :P). Anyways~ I really hope 343 stays true to their words and really displays Chief's personal baggage.

edit: Reading over the OP, again, I'd actually really love to see that. I think it'd be a very emotional moment for the fans, for Chief and Cortana, and it'd really show how much that personal baggage is affecting Chief.

Yeah, I'm not one to just want action, but I think Paolini described things a bit too much for my liking. Like when Eragon traveled to that one place (names are really vague in my mind, it's been awhile) Paolini took the time to explain, what seemed like, every nook and cranny, which is probably what made me lose interest. Not that good description is bad. I just found it excessive. Plus, I found myself skipping chapters and reading ahead to what was happening at Carvahall because I was much more interested in the conflict going on there rather than what Eragon was doing.

I'm getting way off-topic here, sorry. Haha. But, I have faith in 343. I'm not putting my entire trust in them, just yet. But, I think they definitely have the potential to make us "lore lovers" happy with an good story/campaign. I found it very interesting when 343 first said that Chief would be having some personal baggage. Fingers crossed.

I AM A PROUD CHRISTIAN. HALO IS AWESOME BUT GOD IS MUCH BETTER!!!!!!!!
Did you knew that JESUSdied for you?

Sorry not a fan of medieval starwars ... I mean eragon. Torture isn't the way to make him more "human" love anc ompassion is what the chief truly needs.

Johnson did not quite give off the above impression for me.

Seeing Chief being forced to this level of desperation and suffering, then escaping the torture and "rising from the ashes" to face his enemy with renewed determination or something like that, whilst still bearing the emotional scars of his torture, would take his character development to a whole new level (frankly, in the games, I feel there was not much of a first level).

Frankie (or someone at 343i) has said they wanted to explore what the Chief goes through when he's forced to deal with failure, so it's highly plausible. I also like the idea of Cortana, who is drifting into madness, having to help Chief maintain his sanity.

Yeah, I don't really get all the flak Eragon gets :/ It's not even that similar to Star Wars (and what similarities there are not exactly with Star Wars itself but rather the common stuff you find in a "Hero's Journey" type of story). But what really confuses me is when people call it a rip off of Lord of the Rings O_o I'm a huge nerd about the latter, and I've never seen anything remotely similar enough to be called a blatant rip-off.

OT: I look forward to whatever 343i has planed for the Chief as long as they stay true to what has been defined in the past as his character. Like even if he does display more emotion less subtly, I don't expect to suddenly be all open and emotional, talking about how he feels all of the time, as the character is first and foremost a stoic type of guy.

"No, Hoobla. No."
~DeeJ

No, this is not a soap opera, I don't want chief to confess his feelings to Cortana, I want him to to continue being a beast, MORE than an animal, not a pathetic ball of emotions.

  • 12.17.2011 6:25 PM PDT

The thing is, many people dont want the chief to develope character.

the chief is suposed to be, like many other characters although i can best descibe him like chell from portal, or mario, or(best example) Commander sheperd from mass effect.

he doesnt talk because they dont want him to have a identity, they want you to be him.

you are the humantiy in him, thats why he doesnt need any development.

One thing i do want is better side character development.

like they said up top, sarg. johnson or captain keys or miranda, Definitly Cortana.

You want chief to have more humanity, but halo isnt that type of game.

one good one for that is mass effect.
