My third montage!
I will agree in part with the OP however there is plenty of "blame" to go around and I use the word blame very loosely here.
I want to use BF3 as an example. When BF3 was released I think many of us, myself included felt the game was incomplete. That said it was still playable and for the most part an enjoyable experience. Now there were/are things that I noticed, obvious things such as the tactical flash light being ridiculously bright even on daytime maps. But for the most part I didn't have many complaints about it.
But as I started reading and contributing to the BF3 forums, I noticed something with in my own attitude towards BF3 that was changing. I would read a posts from numerous people who would all point out similar things that I hadn't thought of before or noticed. And then after reading such threads I would notice these things in game.
My point is that had I never started reading/contributing to the BF3 forums I would have been blissfully unaware of many things. I don't know if that's good or bad. I've been gaming a long time. You don't have to be "good" player to realize something, be it a game mechanic, a weapon, or certain position on map is over powered or underpowered.
I guess all I'm really trying to say is that yeah the community is to blame, but some of that blame rests on bungie as well.
Think about this: What if during the 16-bit generation we could have provided the type of instant feed back that developers get now?
How do you think such classics such as Zelda, Metroid and mega man would have been received? Obviously there is a huge difference between those single player games and the world of online play but I can't help but think there would be similar reaction both good and bad.
Now before the upper echelon players call me bad or whatever, let me say that many of the things that Bungie did with Reach I didn't agree with, as well, many of the things that the "hardcore" community pointed out I agree with.
Reach should have been built from the top down. It would have played just fine for the rest of us mere mortals.
Casuals, before you freak out think I'm completely siding with them think on this: Would it have hurt us that much if bungie had built Reach from the top down? Seriously, honestly think about that.
Reach could have easily provided quality gameplay for the ultra-competitive and a quality "casual" experience for everyone else.
As it stands now? We have game trying to do both and accomplishing neither.
Your millage may vary.
