Subject: Bungie.net deviance

There seems to be a large group of users on Bungie.net that seem to have troubles following rules no matter how hard they try, as well as a group of B.net users that seem to have no problem following the rules without even thinking twice.

Why do you think it's hard for some to follow the rules, but easy for others?

What is you opinion on the matter based your experience on the B.net?

What do you think could be done to make it easier to follow the rules?

What do you think is the cause of this "deviance"?

Give me your thoughts!

Keep in mind that by deviance I mean the non-conformity to written rules here on the B.net, but not the non-conformity to the unwritten norms (unless relevant to discussion).

Warning: Sociology talk, this way comes.

Notable theories:

People break the rules to relieve stress.
People break the rules accidentally, although carelessly.
People are commonly trolled into breaking the rules.
Breaking the rules enforces a respect of them.
The rules misinterpret their own reason at times.
People break the rules, because they disagree with them.

Award members for positive contribution.

“Strange,” mused the Director, as they turned away, “strange to think that even in Our Ford’s day most games were played without more apparatus than a ball or two and a few sticks and perhaps a bit of netting. imagine the folly of allowing people to play elaborate games which do nothing whatever to increase consumption.”

Some people choose to break the rules, just for fun.

I used to be easily trolled on the "reach" forum. That's where I recieved my warnings.

Have you seen my mind anywhere? I seem to have lost it...

0x0 x0x 0x0 000 000 x0x 000
x0x 0x0 0x0 0xx 000 0x0 000
x0x x0x x00 0xx 0x0 x0x 0x0

I have seen you future

1) Some people post sober, others don't.

2) Some deviance can be amusing, but more than a tiny amount gets annoying.

3) Breathalyzer. Honestly they made the rules much clearer, and it all really boils down to don't be a jerk, don't spam, and post in the right forum.

4) I think some people just don't care enough to do anything about it, and others follow the law of averages, if you post enough eventually you will post something that bends the rules.

Do you think it'd be fair to place lighter rules on acts such as replying to spam, getting trolled or being purposely put in a state of stress by another user?

I myself can only speculate, however in history, Adolf 'you know who' claimed that there were two kinds of people: Workers and "Country Folk," which putting into modern terms could be something like ones with effort and ones without.

With this in mind, the answer to your inquiry is quite clear, however this philosophy is not factual, at least it hasn't been scientifically challenged by modern powers.

You believe in this theory yourself? It's a very primitive and outdated theory you know.

Oh no, I broke the rules fair and square. If the rules were lighter this place would be swamped with more trolls and spam. The rules are there for a reason. Plus after a ban you learn to ignore "trolls" as it's not worth the ban.

So you break the rules at will when you think of something you think will be funny? Do you think what you do should be against the rules?

The distance between insanity and genius is measured only by success.

The problem with the world is that the intelligent people are full of doubts, while the stupid ones are full of confidence.

Some people choose to break the rules, just for fun.

Some people do break the rules for fun, and plenty of people post simply to have fun, regardless of whether it breaks a rule.

If a member, before they post, considers whether it could possibly be interpreted as breaking any of the rules, I don't think that there should be a massive problem avoiding warnings/bans. I think the problem may be that plenty members do not consider it that thoroughly, but instead simply post for "fun," and may end receiving a warning/ban. Some members may also do break rules to be "funny," or for attention (in particular trolls) which would result in bans.

As for improvements, I think the current rules are pretty good. Some way to see that a member has been warned for their post, so that other members are aware that the rule it breaks is being enforced, may help slightly.

Trying something once will increace your chances of success, because you tried it. Try someting twice, and your chances increase yet again - seeing as you've done it. Try something a few thousand times, and your chances of success is exponentially increased; this increase would likely provide success every time

In my personal opinion, a lot of it is due to no "value" on accouns to the common user. There's no incentives for following rules (Yipee! A title - I'd rather have a larger selection of avatars) and there's no reason to keep with one account.

The majority of the time it's in the Classifieds, creating a long conversation with a regular there. I don't necessarily think it should be against the rules, given the extreme lack of everything, but it is and I respect that. After all, it's Bungie's site.

So you think that adding awards to a certain amounts of a measured forum cleanliness in the form of titles would encourage users to conform to the rules by appealing to their competitiveness? What do we do to make accounts more worth while to new members then?

I don't think any kind of visual insentive could work. People who respect/enjoy functioning "forum boards" in general will respect the rules. People outside those confines tend to break the rules more willingly. IMO
