I honestly don't really know how this could be done; there is no feasible way to implement a feature to identify "forum respect". Maybe if you could identify external forum membership through a base email address. I'm part of thephysicsforum.com on this email aswell; maybe if there was some way to connect them? I'm not to versed on computer science.

Do you think there could be a way to weave out the people who don't care about our forums, without weaving out too many future positive contributing users?
Posted by: Sven Nietzsche
I don't think any kind of visual insentive could work. People who respect/enjoy functioning "forum boards" in general will respect the rules. People outside those confines tend to break the rules more willingly. IMO

Do you think that there could be a way to enforce the severity of rules without consequently ruining the overall mood of the forums?
Posted by: Spartan TKIA
I think the problem may be that plenty members do not consider it that thoroughly, but instead simply post for "fun," and may end receiving a warning/ban.

I think that the current severity of rule enforcement is pretty good. On the one hand, we want to encourage people to enjoy their time here, and participate in discussion, but, on the other hand, members should not be replying to spam, flaming other members, etc..

I think, as long as warnings are given for the first infringement of its type, there should be no major problems, as members are then discouraged from posting inconsiderately, but the punishment is not too server. Were the rules to be enforced more harshly, I think the mood would be affected, and if the rules were enforced less severely there would be too little discouragement to post within the rules.

I can't really see any way to allow members to post entirely for "fun," without it negatively affecting other members, so I think warnings/bans are necessary, even if it does affect the mood.

I myself can only speculate, however in history, Adolf 'you know who' claimed that there were two kinds of people: Workers and "Country Folk," which putting into modern terms could be something like ones with effort and ones without.

With this in mind, the answer to your inquiry is quite clear, however this philosophy is not factual, at least it hasn't been scientifically challenged by modern powers.

Post Scriptum:

Please do not derail this thread by replying to this comment based off of the speaker I quoted. eighty percent of the things I'd estimate you may think or say is not relevant. Let's discuss the twenty.
This seems to be a pretty good explanation.

"That's about all that can be said for plots, which anyway are just one thing after another, a what and a what and a what.

Now try how and why."

If you want to understand why people act as they do, never adopt a unitary explanation. We can get into simple ignorance and stupidity, but that ignores the fact that, despite what popular culture and posh intellectuals want to portray, the only thing that has kept humanity alive for thousands of years has been the ability to think and adapt. On the other hand, it's impossible to account for it entirely with any sort of rationality. Previously outstanding members have been banned for sudden angry outbursts and lapses in judgment.

The only thing the bungie.net moderators can use for coercion is taking away a person's account, but there isn't any way of making a person care about it. I've seen many users who had numerous connections to numerous groups get banned.

In the end, I don't think we should think about the rules in terms of changing people. The rules are the standards we have on this site. They are simply a line that is drawn. People will cross them because they don't understand it or they don't care. It doesn't matter which. If people were so predictable that they could all respond uniformly to some sort of stimuli, regardless of how beneficial it would be, I wouldn't want to interact with on the forums. People would be boring if they were so predictable.

To put it nicely: See what the sociology of deviance is like today. Notice no one gave any credit to that man for his theory, his theory never being mentioned, no theories being based on his theory and all other theories being far superior in looks and correct in feel.

It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial. And it is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves the flag, whose coffin is draped in the flag that allows the protester to burn the flag.Father Dennis Edward O'Brien, USMC

Its a choice. Its not hard. You follow or you dont. Or if you push them... and last and bend a knee... you get to be a mod.

Yax is a shining beacon in these dark times. You should all strive to be more like Yax.

Bit surprised you didn't include something along the lines of this:

They understand the rules but have their own image of what the community/forums should be and believe it to be superior, so they disregard rules for the sake of what they see as an improved experience.

I'm kind of staying away from adding thoughts, for the sake of experiment. Thank you for adding such a piece of Merton's theory (?), Yax.

Why do you think it's hard for some to follow the rules, but easy for others?

Some people want to discuss things that are against the rules, and others aren't very interested in it, for whatever reason (Perhaps they have an outlet in private groups, or they just aren't interested in that kind of discussion). I think others may just post in a way that moderators often feel might be offensive or lewd. But, really, I haven't seen this kind of widespread and repeated banning of individuals on what I would think to be unreasonable grounds since the last rule revision. It's much more often, now, for threads to be locked instead of posters being banned, I think.

What is you opinion on the matter based your experience on the B.net?

I think I just gave it..

What do you think could be done to make it easier to follow the rules?

Honestly? Make the rules more lenient. I'd like the ability to discuss politics at least, and preferably religion, too. A lot of political discussion goes on in The Flood, anyway.

What do you think is the cause of this "deviance"?

Pretty sure this question is redundant, given what I answered above.

What doesn't it have to do with the topic? My point isn't just that people are different, they're different beyond:
"What do you think is the cause of this "deviance"?"

You posted with the assumption that there is an easily visible line between people who can and can't follow the rules.
I rejected this assumption based on what I've seen from experience.

You asked what we can do to cause people to break the rules less. I replied by saying that the rules are to improve the site, not the members.
