Oni: Swordbase boosting may not be a bannable offense according to Bungie/343 but it's still the definition of lame. Like AFK'ing in Firefight, I can guarantee you that checkpoint boosting for hours straight was *not* the way the game's creators meant for the Target Locator to be used. That wasn't it's purpose.

It's called an exploit.

And Boomyah, why is my analogy terrible? You stole Cr using an exploit early on .. why should it not matter now?

No no no no no no! There's a difference between boosting credits via pathway that's bannable and using a method that Bungie said was fine.

True, it was a whopping 100k. But it was back when 100k was three to four ranks, and Cr was a whopping 500-600 per multiplayer game.

As I've said before, using the Locator to boost through lower ranks is like pretending the money you stole to start your business means nothing 10 years later when your business is a success. You STILL stole it, in the end.
That is a terrible analogy.

Here's a better one:

If you AFKed through FF, it's like having a salary, but whenever you show up to work you don't actually do anything productive. If you Target Locator'd, it would be like you went to work and just did the same thing over and over and over again; however, you still at least did some work.

IMO they are both ways to earn Cr while playing the game improperly. FF wasn't meant to be AFK'd through, like the TL wasn't meant to be used repeatedly for hours straight to boost ranks/commendation progress.

Right, I get it that everybody has declared Oni farming as legit because Bungie said it's not bannable.

That still doesn't erase the fact that Oni farming is a joke, period. Take Bungie's opinion right out of the equation and think about it for a second ... neither method of gaining Cr includes playing the game properly.

You're supposed to play through levels of the campaign to kill leaders, infantry class, specialists and so on ... not checkpoint boost at one location with one weapon for 5 hours straight.

You're supposed to actually play through Firefight levels and contribute toward making the bonus round .. not stand by and rack up game complete credits 20 mins at a time.

Just because YOU feel that they're both equally wrong doesn't mean that they are. Bungie said that using the TL that way was fine by them, but they said that AFKing was not.

What's the criteria for the number of whatever custom challenges you're doing (kills or whatever)? Is it 1000 kills to get max credits from one challenge or what?

You can even do 500. The max cR per custom challenge is 5000 cR and if set to 3 hours they don't expect you to boost ONI/Nightfall into oblivion to complete the challenge.

Screw it, this is exactly what you do.
Oni, Heroic, all skulls save Iron and Blind. All 3 hour time limits.

Medals : 600 cR 5000
Kills with Weapon, Target Locator : 800 cR 3875 (It's kind of pointless to kill more)
Kills of Enemy : Grunt Hero 175 cR 5000
Kills of Enemy : Jackal Spec. 300 cR 5000
Kills of Enemy : Skirmisher Spec. 200 cR 5000

Save and quit every 10 minutes on the game timer and refresh/turn in/recreate any challenges you finished.

Rinse, repeat for 3 hours.

OH NO EVERYONE WILL BE AN INHERITOR NOW!!!!!

Y'all care too much.

If you're doing it for hours at a time, yeah it's boosting. But it involves a bit more game play than reverting to last save .. lol

I'm obviously looking at this from an ethical stance.

You mentioned earlier a better analogy for Oni farming would be a person at work doing the same thing over and over again, but at least doing something. That sounds similar to the Barry Bonds defenders who claimed, though he juiced, he still had to connect with the ball to send the ball out of the yard.

Or we could all just say that the dude exploited the game to hit homers, like people exploit this game for credits. It's pretty simple.

Its not boosting. That is like calling it boosting when I only go for kills in an objective game.

Nooooooo, that analogy does not apply at all.

First of all, I'm not doing a whole lot more by just flying my Falcon around getting kills than what other people do by reloading the same checkpoint. And yes, I did do it for a few hours a couple times. But I'm not boosting.

And your analogy of taking roids to do better at a game does not at all match up to "boosting" credits by replaying one part of the campaign multiple times (I am ignoring the scope/size of the offense, btw). With roids, you're adding an outside influence to the game; it would be more akin to using an aim-bot or something like that. A closer analogy would be like using batting practice statistics in the overall stats for the season.

That's obviously boosting unless you're doing something like 2 slaying, 2 cap'ing flags

If you've got 2 flags in BTB and decide to spawn trap the other team to pile up kills, that's the definition of boosting (your kill/death ratio).

But we don't do that (hold the objective against scrandoms) to get credits; we do it to play the game more. We don't want to have dozens of games that take faster than the time it took to find the match.

You won't get a full mil that way, though. Usually people that do use a program to move enemy spawns under the shells of the designator. Besides, if you play any after doing that for 3 hours, you'll lose you're extra cR back to 120K. Which is oddly the only reason I did this method the other night. To see if the cap was still there. Yup, it is. 343 knows there is an issue and is 'working' on it.

I know you don't do it for credits. That's why I stated kill/death ratio specifically. But I can actually see the argument about games lasting longer than search times.

Also, with your other post I don't think the origin (outside, inside) of the influence makes a difference. It's exploiting no matter what.

I remember once when I was fooling around in the online co-op campaign, the other two people in the lobby picked long night of solace then quit after the first drop pod elite wiped them, out leaving me by myself. For -blam!-s and giggles I held down the beach for like 2 hours straight before I got killed. I think the spree was like 450+ using the wraith and everything. I was curious to see how long the covies would keep coming (obviously forever). But it's like flying around in new alexandria shooting down banshees .. they're coming for a reason. And I can't see how either is even remotely comparable to pressing start and selecting "revert to last save" over and over again to gain commendation medals. Harvesting on new alexandria and long night of solace actually includes "playing" the game. Oni farming includes pressing a couple of buttons.

Too bad there's a credit limit of 120,000 per day. Also boosting the oni sword base glitch only works for a short time. Once you get the commendations onyx you will get less and less credits til your not getting anything.

I get your point, but BTW playing any game is really just "pressing a couple of buttons".

However, you keep missing the main point: The people that "boosted" the TL did it more for the commendations than they did for the credits. They then stopped when the commendation maxed out, not when the credits stopped flowing.

^Credits from custom challenges don't count towards the credit cap until you start playing after you gained 120K from them.

For example, you can get 200K credits from custom challenges (turned in or no), but as soon as the first 120K get cashed, you stop getting credits from playing.

I think.

All I know is that you can get more than the cap using custom challenges.
