Have a gander of this image I threw together a while back. That's more or less how the weapons in Reach function. Upon closer viewing, I realized that we really don't need as much weapons as we have in the sandbox for Halo to function.

DMR, AR, Shotgun, Sniper, Rockets, and maybe the Plasma Pistol/Grenade Launcher are all the sandbox really needs. The rest (save for Invasion) are more or less irrelevant.

So why do people complain when playlists like MLG get rid of extraneous weapons? All they do is clutter the map.

EDIT: The only meme really relevant to the thread

Subject: Weapon Variety--does it actually exist?

Sometimes, you think too much.

  • 12.18.2011 3:03 PM PDT

It exists in campaign. But I wouldn't know about multiplayer. It seems that combining the BR and sniper into the DMR makes a "one size fits all" weapon. Other weapons work too, but require certain circumstances.

Lol

It depends on the playlists and the level of skill of those said playlists you play it. After making a new account, most of the time in TS I see a lot of variety. On this account on the same playlist I see strictly mid-range combat and power weapon control. So yes, it does exist; but only if you are a certain level on certain playlists.

i dont see the grenade launcher as a support explosive weapon, not the way i use it at least.

Most of the other weapons are simply beatdown extensions.

Hey, uh, if you like vs threads, then check out this little group right here, if you have the time. It's pretty fun, just hop right in.

Seems to me the only weapon anybody needs is the Battle Rifle or the DMR.

Maybe in Halo 4 they'll forsake every weapon except for the utility weapon.

Only the sword. The hammer can be used for jumping and blocking grenades. But it doesn't have that large of a lunge, so there is a trade off.

No it isn't. But useless weapons decorating the ground gives bad players a sense of "variety" for some reason.

People complain because unless you understand the fundamentals of the halo sandbox at a competitive level, then you feel as if your being cheated out of the game as a whole when weapons get taken away. This however; is coming from personal experience from seeing people hate MLG just because they took out the radar, etc. Which I find quite sad and dissapointing.

Nope. SouthPole isn't a person. He's the avatar of the force of tryhards everywhere. He stalks the web looking for retards to set straight. He can not be stopped by mere bans or thread locks for he shall rise anew.

Having 8 weapons that do the same thing isn't variety.

Why is hypocrite spelled with an E at the end?
The I in crite is not pronounce as eye.

So, on the one hand I spell it out exactly as it should be.
You follow the standard set before you by fools who can't even get a handle on the rules of their own language.

Sektor, post your Reach meme.

Arrogant hyperbolic exclamations of woe? Seems like a normal day for Halo/Bungie.net.

It's not necessary for competitive gameplay.

But then again, judging from playlist numbers throughout the Halo series, competitive gameplay is only fun to ~5% of the players.

I think as long as it's fun it should be in the game. And Reach's sandbox is a lot better and purposeful than H2/H3's sandbox.

"Team shoot the wraith!"
"What's a team shoot and what's a wraith?!"
"It means we all shoot at the big blue thing together!"
"Okay!"
*starts betraying blue teammate*

Lol. Maybe if the hammer's shockwave was longer than its 2 foot lunge range it'd be useful.

Very true.

Now... imagine how Plasma weapons might change if each Plasma weapon was given different attributes.

Plasma Pistol keeps its Overcharge.
Plasma Rifle gets Plasma Stun back.
Plasma Repeater gets splash damage.

Hell, join the Repeater and the Concussion Rifle. High rate of fire, low damage against health, good damage against Shields, some push back, and some spalsh damage.

Subject: Weapon Variety-- is it really necessary?

Is weapon variety necessary?
Necessary?
Is it necessary for me to drink my own urine?
Probably not.

But I'd rather have a game with multiple weapons that do different things than just one gun.

It like giving us a choice at restraunts. Do you always want to order the steak? Or do you want to choose from other entrées?
