Subject: Cheating and Halo 3

This will ensure your bungie.net posts are formatted properly.

Cheating has been running rampant all over Halo 2 and Bungie has been combating it for over two years now and cheating is still very prevalent. What measures are being taken to assure that Halo 3 will be less modifiable and gameplay will be free from cheaters?

Dedicated Serves, so no more Standbying, Bridging, etc.

No more modding due to the Xbox 360s super security. Even if modders get past it, Bungie will come up with something.

Dedicated servers mean that nobody hosts a game. Would this provide for a battle system more simliar to the Battlefield games, with the broad, wide open spaces? The matchmaking system wouldn't work this way, and surely not a party system, unless each server had to start up a new game everytime people wanted to play a game. Also meaning you can't just start a custom game on somebodys 'host'. Interesting to see where this multiplayer will go, which is undoubtedly what most of the hardcore community is really looking foreward too in the first place.

I've said this a hundred times before, and I'll say this again. If Bungie seriously wants to stop cheating, they will have to do this. First off, make sure that when a cheater is banned, not only is their gamertag banned but also their credit card AND their xbox 360 so they will have to get a new xbox 360 to cheat again. Secondly, create a dedicated team of employees whose sole purpose is to ban cheaters.

Cheaters will find a way to mod. You can count on it.

A Guide to Networking, Matchmaking, and Host in Halo (HBO mirror)

Bungie Friends and Family invitee, and sender of "random emails" about networking.

Easy ways to prevent cheating:

Map security. It needs to be rock solid. Or at least ensure that there's no way to play online with modified content. Lock users out using the software instead of MS's security systems; far quicker.

Suiciders: option to boot those that repeatedly commit suicide.

Betrayers: let's get the system glitch free this time eh?

Host transfer: ensure that the host of the game can't manipulate connections anyway near as easily by using third party servers to allow the switching of host if connections are repeatedly interupted.

For instance, the host would be constantly communicating with one of the live servers. If that connection was severed for more than a few seconds, the server contacts all players in that game, and switches the host.

Unfortunatly, that will never happen, it breaks the xbox live contract Battlecruiser.

I hope they will have Dedicated serves because with an Xbox 360 it is easier to stand-by.

Reach MMO. Here's to hoping.

And the people that believe "the hardcore playlists would be more popular if the rules were strictly MLG" can come off it, now. If you're not willing to support something close to your own setup, there's no reason for us to believe that cloning our own lists and stripping the variety down will attract more people. -- Shishka, Bungie.net

H2 has almost been ruined due to cheaters. Something has to be done for H3.

Legendary!

dedicated servers would pretty much end the current party system used by Halo 2, correct? If thats the case, thats the first point Bungie is losing with me, I love the system the way it is, and I would like to see something with more security to prevent cheating, but I dont want to lose the current party system.

You can't just ban a credit card anymore. They are not required for a Xbox Live Gold subscription. All the person has to do is go buy another pre-paid card.

Well if microsoft owns the company then why can't they just change the damn contract? Cheaters have caused Halo 2's downfall along with standbyer's, bridgers, deranker's etc...

I think one thing people should consider is the fact that bungie can't do alot about the cheating. Its not thier console...and its not thier online service. If you want to complain to someone who can actually do something.....go complain at microsoft so something gets done. Microsoft can't do anything about the cheating if we are all sitting here -blam!-ing to the developer of a couple games for the system. Halo isn't the only game that has cheaters online.

I like the first one, there should be a set limit of suicides per player, however it is unfair to limit that amount to 2 or 3 because on small maps like Midship, my own plasma gernades tend to find there way back to my face.

The second is baloney (yes i know i spelled it wrong). One person from your team and one from the other are slugging it out, you run in the middle to help and open fire with your smg and your friend walks right into it. Yes that's a betrayal, but it says the other dude killed your friend. Saves you 5 seconds and the loss of a point. Accidents happen and this system seems to account for them very nicely. But there are some times when the system is abused but i've seen it do more good than harm.

The third is a nice idea, but should be limited to ranked matchmaking. We don't want to tie up Bungie's servers with Custom games and create large amounts of lag. We also don't want to waste the 3rd party servers on unranked games in Team Training.

i think cheating will NEVER happen because of what MS did to the xbox360

"I've got a fever, and the only prescription is MORE COWBELL."

I think there should be an option to reset your rank. That way, delevelers won't have to ruin the game for everyone else.

no because RainBowSix BlackArrow had that for clan matches and a lot of the games sucked because of the lag ( so no dedicated serves ) unlesss bungie can make is so we have no lag ( which you can't do ) so ya off that point

I think cheating will exist in every game, sport ect. for ever. All we can do is come up with more advanced technology to keep it to a low. But, I think cheating will never be solved.

Accualy there probably won't be dedicated servers because it's xbox live they already have a system. Besides even though dedicated servers are better they cost money to run and MS isnt going to do that unless they raise xbl cost to like 10$ a month.

I have an Idea that I submitted awile back that the server setup should be dedicated for matchmade and/or ranked and player hosted for custom games this would cut cost to provide dedicated servers and also freein up resources to watch those servers.

Money which seems to concern alot people shouldnt be a problem Halo is the most popular game frachise of the 21st century and they make so much money just off licensing master chief for branding toys, comics, books, and etc that it will never be a problem unless people stop likeing Halo. And its not a matter of money its a matter of keeping the fan base. So on that basis they will most likely go with what works to keep the gamers happy so that they will come back to buy Halo 10.

Also on modding the people who do it are not so bright because the people who actually made the mods for the system in the first place the ones who spent countless hours and thousands of dollars on Xbox's and made the software have no intention whatesoever of cheating they just want to get more bang for there buck in video games and to combat their curiosity of the endineered world.

I do not support cheating but I feel that the people who actually make mods not to cheat should not be all put into one bad category.

With the 360 you have the choice to avoid a player so you don't get matched up with them. So all you have to do is avoid a cheater when and if you get cheated.

Yes you can, you just need to know how to configure the servers in the proper way. More than likely, RainbowSix, much like GRAW, does not work well because they are using the same set of servers for all of their games (Ubisoft) Bungie, having the financial power of MSFT behind them, can easily set up a few racks of dedicated servers that would be more than sufficient of Halo 3. How do you think core routers handle the Terabits of information that constantly flows through them. It is more than possible, its simple. Its just a matter of understanding the technology and fitting it into the mold of the gametype.

And RiddickRules in right on cue. The avoidance system used on the 360 will help a great deal in the fight against cheating.
