Fellow Halo 2 forum members,

Since I've been detracting topics in this forum with my SLASO strategy obsessions which I haven't been able to put to rest, I'll post all my observations here and hopefully rid myself of this terrible burden that plagues me every night.

First of all, if you would like to use this as a guide, please get acquainted with these terms:

Single segment - means all in one try, no saves or deaths
Segmented - means continuation from where I last saved and quit but it's absolute, from one game save
Not segmented - means just strategies. Not really a run as it is a demonstration/test

I have identified each level I have tested with one of these terms.

LEVELS:

CAIRO STATION - Not segmented

Playlist

To do this level single segment SLASO would be greater than or the equivalent of completing the entire Halo 2 campaign on Legendary without dying.

_______

ORACLE - Segmented

Playlist

My most hated Halo 2 level... reduced to pebbles.

_______

GREAT JOURNEY - ?

Halo 2 SLASO is the stuff of legend and I'm posting this here so I can revive the Halo 2 SLASO movement, which has strategic potential, and relieve myself of all this bloody temptation that has been torturing me since the early days...

Happy Holidays! :D

_______

OLD POSTS (this was originally a dedicated Cairo Station LASO strategy thread):

I'm now going to take a vacation from Halo games and the Halo forums this week. That much time away from Halo should restore my sanity and help me feel rejuvenated.

Am I feeling it now? No. But someday, someone will ask me, "are you feeling it now SG?" and I'll be able to answer Yes.

So... bye everyone!

Regarding hangar 1:
After 7 hours of non-stop cursing today (12 AM to 4 AM, 2 PM to 5 PM), I have developed a fine strategy. It used to take me 3-5 minutes (i.e. my first successful attempt) to clear the 1st hangar, but that was with Assassins turned off (Johnson was much more useful in distracting Covies and the other marines lived longer so they were helpful in distracting the Elites). With Assassins turned on, it became like Reach Legendary: Hell. H2 friendly AI > Reach friendly AI

Only pros like MisterMonopoli can properly execute a cqc battle with those Covies (and get hit by a flying vehicle or scenery item and live). And since I'm not pro, I wanted to find an alternate way that was within our area of capability. And I did.

The easiest way is to get Elites to take out swords and assassinate them 1 at a time as seen in the featured video. Also, near the end, something unexpected happened. The damn door blows up... while I still have 1 Elite remaining! If this was single segment, I would have had a heart attack right there.

Out of 47+ attempts, only about 15 were nearly or completely successful. Johnson must be pushed into the room or he'll disappear if you go too far from him (this applies anywhere actually). Grunts can send Johnson flying all over the place which is why they must be headshotted asap. So it is best to push him down after killing all the Grunts (untested but may turn out better as noted). Sword Elites can push Johnson through the walls and he'll be gone forever. That dual wielding Elite is extremely dangerous and smart + unusually responsive.

Difficulty: 10/10, 8.5/10 with Assassins off

Regarding hangar 2:
I once thought this was impossible to do unless you jumped in there and had a brawl with the Covies. But now I think I've got a solution.

My current strategy:

-headshot all Grunts (and forget about Johnson, only using him for infinite ammo through ally swap glitch)
-Stick as many Elites as possible to get them to take out swords (or at least make them go into melee only mode where they don't shoot their rifles). First rearrange these 2 crates. Knock the small one off the ledge and move the big one next to the other one). Then get behind it, cloak, move a bit forward so you can see an Elite, and throw a plasma at him, repeat
-when you return to 1st hangar for plasmas, if they aren't on the ground level but on the ledge, you don't have to go up there. You can just go under the plasma grenades and jump to pick them up
-lure sword Elites 1 at a time to the room (the one with the human turret) for an assassination opportunity (tested and it seems plausible)

If all sword Elites here can be lured one at a time and assassinated, then this isn't so bad.

Difficulty: 8/10 (inconclusive)

Update: Yep, getting them to pull out swords seems to be the answer. I got the Goldie and his buddies to spawn. :D

Outfrakking STANDING post!

The forums have been too long dominated by "what should the next game or remake have" posts, and lacking posts that explore the ways to make the campaign gameplay as challenging as possible. SG and Grumpy Posts are always a MUST READ!

I very much enjoyed reading this, especially since I have been mired in my own (un-authored) attempts at both CE and 2 pain in the ass play methods.

CE-been going for legendary no die, no health pack runs on each level. Completed PofA, Halo, T & R (that was a stone cold SOB), Silent Cart and AotCR (that took 8 days to get one without dying and no health packs!)

For H2 I mess around with the skull combos alot, depending on how much time I have to focus on a specific type of insanity. I am happy to see that some of the tactics you describe are also ones I have found to be useful.

Right now I have Thunderstorm, Catch, Envy, Sputnik, Assassins and Angry going and found the same issues for CS. The only way through is to get the elites pissed off enough to go to the sword, then they are not so tough. What alot of people miss is that you can still use the PP/BR noob combo on a cloaked elite. As long as he is running straight at you, and you have a decent aim, your PP overcharge will light him up, and a headshot finishes him no sweat. I have found that the second hanger is almost manageable if you use the crates to block their fire, then use plasmas to get them to the sword, then goad the sword bearers into chasing you back towards the machine gun turret, and viola, that is your chance to noob combo them. If you miss with the first overcharge and he is fairly close, you better cloak quick or he will Ginsu your hide into nice sized slices.

I have found that you have to have Catch active, or you will never have enough grenades. I used to think that this helped best by allowing grouped grunts to be taken out and creating a nice pile. But if you have Sputnik active, the first grenade explosion sends everybody flying far enough away to survive the huge round of secondaries. As fulfilling as that mass explosion is, it does nothing but blow up hanger floor, as all Thunderstormed elites usually survive, and laugh at you. Now it makes more sense to take out the grunts close enough to your part of the hanger that you can cloak and run over to pick up dropped nades. This keeps you well enough supplied to take on all those annoying waves of elites.

Anyway, THANKS MUCHO to the OP, for giving me something great to repy too! I haven't watched to vids yet, I will later, but the read was great. Nice job bringing the conversation back to GAMEPLAY!

HOLY S**T!

At first I was saying to myself "make it a run for it!", but using Johnson to lure out the elites and prepping the marines to recharge your shields was genius! It's nice to see a SLASO thread instead of "HALO 2: REMAKE OR NO?". I don't have much time on my hands right now, but I'll take a look at your other videos and post a reply again once I get through with those.

SG:

I am about half way through the first hanger vid, very nice work!

I never knew you could get Johnson that far into the level. I assume you basically have to keep hammering him with the sword to move him along through doors that go red behind you.

You show amazing patience in getting to the right times to nade or assassinate elites, it was fun to watch!

With my never being able to have Johnson along I very rarely dared to go to the floor with any significant skull combo, way too dangerous with no one else to distract those damn elites, they focus on the MC all the time. It is a very cool tactic.

I also found it interesting that you never moved the crates on the upper landing. I always move the middle one towards the left side and group the two of them. I always assumed the cover was best when you had them together, I was impressed by that.

Very Very cool posting!

I wouldn't say that. I found that to be the case on Waypoint. Here, there's still life. Did you see G Domin8r's post? You should take a look.

I love making strategies too. :3

PoA isn't too bad.
Halo always seems like hell to me.
T&R is a scary level.
SC is the easiest one.
For AotCR, that would have been hell to do without skipping.

I can safely say that without my much needed vacation, I may spend up to 7 hours today trying to get past Authorized Personnel Only. *shudders*

Great!

With Mythic on, you need 2 plasma pistol overcharges. Famine makes that inconvenient so hoarding plasma pistols might be a good idea since picked up weapons don't usually disappear. Of course, against weapon Elites, dual wielding plasma pistols is the best option since they'll just take cover if their shields get low. Dual wielding needlers, plasma rifles, etc. will work on sword Elites.

There is a way to avoid the first blow from the sword Elite if you crouch + melee (with projectile weapon or sword I don't know) at the right time IIRC. I think it really depends on which animation it is: horizontal step slash or vertical slice.

I wouldn't say that. There's plenty of plasmas in the 1st hangar. Bringing 4 plasmas from the previous areas will give you enough to last up to the 2nd hangar. But then it does become a problem unless you skip the room after the armory. After that, you only have 2 Ultra Elites to deal with (the rest are Rangers). The bomb room battle isn't too bad since you can assassinate Elites there. But no Black Eye would make it very risky. I have to try it without Black Eye. Oh there I go again. NNOOOOO!!! *starts Halo 2 while weeping*

Well I'll be damned. With GBD on most of the time, I never thought of setting up a huge grenade pile right in their midst. I mean we need to see more of this. And this. We need coordinated grenade death traps, not the random Grunt Funeral explosions that are supposedly strategic. Imagine if Pinata was in H2.

No problem. It's my only life purpose at the moment. If I had CEA, I might have been doing that.

If it weren't for Grumpy and MisterMonopoli, I wouldn't even be interested in H2 SLASO. Give them credit. I'm just a strategic adviser to the community.

With Sputnik on, setting up blockades was the only way to get Johnson to the hangar. I did it a long time ago but it took me like 3 hours because I didn't have the guts to charge in there with the sword and assassinate Ultra Elites. MisterMonopoli set the H2 SLASO style combat. I'm just a follower.

There's doors that go red? :S Oh you must mean the one before the bomb battle. I never got Johnson that far. I don't even know if it would be possible. I shudder at the thought of bringing 2 Johnsons. Damn there I go again. NNNOOOOOOO!!!

Well it only looks like patience. I was actually losing my patience. The 2nd hangar was easy compared to the first one, which was HELL. About 31% of my many attempts were successful.

Have you considered higher ground? The Elites like to climb up crates. That's one of the best opportunities to assassinate them. I have yet to test... ha, I will not be tempted! Not again! Not by you H2!

I did move the crates at the 2nd hangar but the ones at the 1st hangar are just about right (Bungie didn't make as many mistakes as they did recently). The only time I really need adequate cover is when those Needler Grunts come in. They are hard to see and those shards are freaking fast!!

Thanks again! :D

Posted by: path1k
are you using mods ghost?
Nope. But to get the cp at the 2nd hangar, yes, I temporarily made my character invincible; I also used the dev trainer to give me one shot kill.

And I don't know how I survived that melee at 18:19 in the hangar 1 video. I'm not sure if it was a melee or plasma rifle fire.

Now I must exile myself or risk playing H2 for hours again. See ya later guys!

Well ok. The way he tackles the hangar rooms in his CS SLASO runs is God level compared to my methodical strategy. It may look like spamming the right trigger, but it's a real pain in the ass picking out the Elites from the Grunts. It's easiest when you target the Elites first then take out the panicking Grunts but it's still a heart attack inducing battle. I have never managed it.

The weight of your heresy will stay your feet. It is the magic conch shell that is the giver of life. There is no other. The all knowing conch... it rains down delicacies from the skies to all those who believe in it's magic (skip to 7:16)!! ALL HAIL THE MAGIC CONCH!! :D

Btw, I got 2 Johnsons and Keyes at the part with the Ranger Elites using my complex blockade schemes. But as soon as I moved the 3 into the room with the dead ODST and hit that loading point... the 2nd Johnson and Keyes were gone! GONE!! :'( Imagine if we could bring every marine on the level to the bomb room. There were quite a lot of marines on the level. Bring them together and that would be quite some force, especially in such close quarters.

Cool, the elevator ride would look cool, then go get that stupid guy in the back and make him fight too, lol. You could pickle him to death again.

Too bad about Johnson. Any chance that a manipulation of some kind would allow one of them to stay? Just keeping Keys would be awesome. Maybe take one of the Johnsons back a ways, or take Keys back to see if both Johnsons stay?

Pickle him to death. XD LOL!!

Btw, I got both that marine and Johnson in the cutscene!! :D

The next scene had Johnson in it so... time paradox?! :o

Well Keyes is out of the question since she's heavy like a block (like Tartarus). But that second Johnson might be easy to work with. I'll have a go at that later. Right now I'm thinking about getting 1st Johnson to that airlock room in the cutscene. Unfortunately, if Johnson is left at the elevator, he doesn't appear when Chief moves the bomb there. I was hoping that it would go right through him. :P

Even when I was doing the 5 first levels on CE as melee and grenades only (now that was a real major pain in the ass, but I could die and I could use health packs), everybody on the other team dies. If I remember correctly AotCR in that method of play took me 2 weeks to figure out how to make it happen. I think I have much less hair now......go figure!
