after everything mankind did to prevent the destruction fo our home planet the covenant still managed to take it over. the cole protocal, the spartan project, everything is done. without earth it is clear that mankind can't win this war. seeing mc walking in that trailer all alone, made me think that he truly is a lone soldier now, mankind is on the verge of extinction. so my guess is that he will keep fighting for mankind until he is killed.

What's up with the Covenant/Human Alliance, also? I thought it was so cool that the Arbiter was helping MC in Halo 2... have the Covenant (or at least the Heretics) joined forces? And are we really sure that Earth has been destroyed? Maybe the trailer actually takes place at the site of the Slipspace rupture during Halo 2, which would have destroyed everything within a few miles. Is that why everything is so baron?

Yeah, check out these passages from the first impressions article over at E3:

"It was intended to be an understated announce of Halo 3 - the tone is that of mystery and suspense - the calm before the storm. I wanted to make sure that we re-introduced the Chief, show that Earth is thoroughly conquered, with Covenant everywhere, and that there is a glorious, ancient artifact buried under the Earth's crust which will provide H3 with the epic journey which we all want," said art director Marcus Lehto.

Master Chief is clearly weary and war-worn and glimpses of Cortana imply she's not doing much better. "The Chief is shown as warrior who has seen horrific battle - and it shows. The Earth is dry, barren, ravaged by the Covenant," said Lehto.

I gather humanity has been absolutely conquered by the covenant and Master Chief is all that stands in the way between ultimate victory and ultimate annihilation.

I am sure there's soldiers left, probably a few small colonies and some ships that retreated reminiscent of battlestar galactica, but clearly, things are pretty bad. Poor Lord Hood...

In high definition baby!

That is probably not the Covenant. I mean the Hunters, Grunt, and Elites are not part of the Covenant anymore. They are just trying to survive.

There once was a boy named Cass
His balls were made out of brass
In stormy weather
His balls clinked together
And sparks flew out of his ass

All I know is that If they are continuing from when the Earth is destroyed then we can hopefully be seeing a book on how that happned...

i admit that we don't know much, but from what we have seen I can conclude the the human race is basically extinct, sure they might have a planet or two left and some secret colonies but with our home planet gone there isn't much hope.

and yes earth is beaten, do you expect the Covenant to be able to amass a huge fleet like that on the surface of our planet with no human resistance? unless like someone said that those are the elites/hunters/grunt and they've allied with the humans, the location is near new mombassa so perhaps the rest of earth is fine, we just dont know.

You dumbass all they did was destroy New Mombosa. If you notice the bridge in the background. You don't think that small area of map on Halo 2 was Earth now did you?

ok for one if a planet is glassed the WHOLE planet is glassed not just some or most of it
also, that relates to this question, why dont the covanent pull out and glass the whole dang thing? The answer: because they need whatever is in that "ark" "artifact" whatever it is. They need it intact is the bottomline. I think that that is a very plausible theory so post up your thoughts on that.
cheers

Yea, you cannot glass a specific region, the glassing process renders the entire planet barren, it burns off the atmosphere in a really subatomic way.
