After so many hundred times of observing this the correlation is a little hard to ignore. And that's where the logic falls off.
correlation =/ causation. It's a bit funny and sad at the same time, but there are those who legitimately believe that a good rebuttal is to look up the arguer's stats and use that to invalidate their opinions, and not even address the argument itself.
Copy pasta'd from another thread:
This seems to be the cliche of the Reach forum, besides rampant AL threads. Someone disregards your argument (no matter how well thought out or researched) just by performing a quick click on your service record. The alleged truth many players have come to unwittingly believe is that one can not understand anything without being proficient in that area.
I ask "why?". There are many examples of people having a great understanding of a facet of our culture without being the one directly contributing to it. Sports referees (hell there have even been coaches), literary critics, and political scientists are the first I can think of. Referees couldn't play anywhere near the level players do, literary critics can't write books (at least not as well as the writers they are critiquing), and political scientists can't run for office, yet they can all analyze their games inside and out.
But I am willing to admit a majority of people with bad stats will likely have a misinformed opinion. The thing that bothers me is posters are willing to write off the minority that actually do know what they are talking about as undeserving of an opinion. How about we cut out the middle man and just read the argument they have presented? Find the fallacies within their logic, not their service record. You could even bring up the point, "Based on your argument you aren't well versed in high level competitive play which refutes your point because A, B, C. If you had experience in top tier Onyx/50 games you would have noticed this." Do you see how that was different? Their stats revealed their ignorance in their argument which you addressed, and there were even evidences provided as to why their experiences at low level play aren't realistic at the top tiers. If you are simply posting things like "lol captain, nope ur bad" because you are too lazy to read their post, you are contributing to the problem of the Reach forum. You spread ignorance and slow down the progress these forums were truly meant for, providing feedback on the game and helping to improve it. "Cutting off your nose to spite your face" is an appropriate saying here.
So why the hate? Has the idiocy of the general Reach forum jaded you enough to where you associate anyone even slightly similar to these posters as unworthy of an intelligent thought? Is it an internal struggle to find self-worth through a video game? To me it seems the people most unqualified for an opinion are the ones using ad hominems as their sole argument (yes folks, only bringing up stats is a fallacy. "Attacking the character and not the argument"). Then again, this was all just my opinion, agree or disagree as you see fit.
