Nope. SouthPole isn't a person. He's the avatar of the force of tryhards everywhere. He stalks the web looking for retards to set straight. He can not be stopped by mere bans or thread locks for he shall rise anew.

lol
It's not like we're wrong.
Yes, it's mean, yes, it's elitist, but it's true.

It's not like we simply do it because of the stats. Eric's terrible, but we still like him.

I'll let you figure out the difference.

PS, it's because you're stupid.

We bash people stats when those people claim to understand the game better than we do, not to bash just to bash.

The 343 forums suck. They're full of retarded kids and mods who got butthurt in the B.net forums for being told that they're bad.

Why should players have to adapt to retarded game mechanics in the first place?

You don't make a terrible, unbalanced game and tell people to "adapt" to it to show the most skill. You make a balanced, good game and have people show their skill in the same situations.

This is in regards to the OP's stance that MLG isn't skilled because they take out rather than adapt to bad game mechanics. My quote button isn't working so well.

Stats do NOT, determine understanding of a game.

After so many hundred times of observing this the correlation is a little hard to ignore.
And that's where the logic falls off.

correlation =/ causation. It's a bit funny and sad at the same time, but there are those who legitimately believe that a good rebuttal is to look up the arguer's stats and use that to invalidate their opinions, and not even address the argument itself.

Copy pasta'd from another thread:
This seems to be the cliche of the Reach forum, besides rampant AL threads. Someone disregards your argument (no matter how well thought out or researched) just by performing a quick click on your service record. The alleged truth many players have come to unwittingly believe is that one can not understand anything without being proficient in that area.

I ask "why?". There are many examples of people having a great understanding of a facet of our culture without being the one directly contributing to it. Sports referees (hell there have even been coaches), literary critics, and political scientists are the first I can think of. Referees couldn't play anywhere near the level players do, literary critics can't write books (at least not as well as the writers they are critiquing), and political scientists can't run for office, yet they can all analyze their games inside and out.

But I am willing to admit a majority of people with bad stats will likely have a misinformed opinion. The thing that bothers me is posters are willing to write off the minority that actually do know what they are talking about as undeserving of an opinion. How about we cut out the middle man and just read the argument they have presented? Find the fallacies within their logic, not their service record. You could even bring up the point, "Based on your argument you aren't well versed in high level competitive play which refutes your point because A, B, C. If you had experience in top tier Onyx/50 games you would have noticed this." Do you see how that was different? Their stats revealed their ignorance in their argument which you addressed, and there were even evidences provided as to why their experiences at low level play aren't realistic at the top tiers. If you are simply posting things like "lol captain, nope ur bad" because you are too lazy to read their post, you are contributing to the problem of the Reach forum. You spread ignorance and slow down the progress these forums were truly meant for, providing feedback on the game and helping to improve it. "Cutting off your nose to spite your face" is an appropriate saying here.

So why the hate? Has the idiocy of the general Reach forum jaded you enough to where you associate anyone even slightly similar to these posters as unworthy of an intelligent thought? Is it an internal struggle to find self-worth through a video game? To me it seems the people most unqualified for an opinion are the ones using ad hominems as their sole argument (yes folks, only bringing up stats is a fallacy. "Attacking the character and not the argument"). Then again, this was all just my opinion, agree or disagree as you see fit.

correlation =/ causation.

Didn't say it did. I suspect my knowledge of statistics as a subject is greater than yours, in fact.

I don't particularly disagree with your copy-paste, but I can't remember the last time I saw an intelligent argument from someone with awful stats.

It's not that having bad stats directly makes your opinion invalid, it's that stupid people don't generally do well at Halo (since it requires intelligence as much as synaptic ability), and consequently have bad stats. If you're an intelligent person, you should be able to maintain a semi-respectable social K/D, if nothing else.

So when someone says something stupid, and has bad stats to boot, I reach a conclusion about their mental ability pretty quickly.

Darkside Eric makes wonderful posts, and he's bad at playing Halo. Only the retards bash on him because they can't understand his logic.

There are exceptions to every rule.

  • 12.20.2011 1:40 PM PDT

Have faith in me

I only bash people stats when they say they are the best and they stink. For example, say a Warrant Officer says, "Yeah, I'm better than you because I got 16 kills in a game and you got 13." If they have a bad K/D (.6 or lower), I'll bash 'em.

  • 12.20.2011 1:47 PM PDT

I won't bash OP's stats, I'll just bash OP for being a complete moron who needs to chug bleach

Don't worry, I didn't accuse you of anything. Consider it a disclaimer of sorts for your post. ;)

I try not to look at the argument in the way that a bad player can't have an informed opinion on anything. That bad player may not have a great understanding on most topics, but there is a good chance they know more than even the best players in a few aspects of Halo. For example I'm bad and I probably know more about driving and piloting mechanics than even the best at this game.

But it's when the bad kids DO try to claim something about a part of the game that he doesn't understand, because he's bad.

Would you listen to a 45% Bronze person who says that Jetpacks are fine? Or someone who is negative and has 35% W/L ratio in Team Slayer who says that you're bad? Or all the Staff Cap'ns who are still negative in Reach telling people like me and better to "adapt" to the game?

THAT'S when we pull the stat card.

I understand that. I wasn't trying to refute what you two were saying, just clarify what you meant and expand the argument to include the other side of this debate. Just like you have seen people claim armor lock is good for competitive gameplay, I've seen people with intelligent posts get no constructive replies, just "lolforcecolonel" and "nopeurbad".

Ah..It will feel nice to get this out to the Reach forum.
Many of you are stat bashers right? Well, what if I said when you bash stats you are more then likely being insecure?

You bash people's stats and brag about your own to gain some acknowledgement, so that YOU may feel good about yourself.I know what your thinking "LOL but Onca you suck at Reach n stuff"

I was once insecure about my stats, infact before I stopped caring my stats were in an upward rise.

I don't play Reach, or any FPS for "acknowledgement of stats" I play for glorious battle.

Let the bashing of my stats begin, I'm sure many of you will do so.

So you are saying this to make yourself feel better? Or is it just a recognition?

My problems [with Reach] are basically just full parties, mlg, and people who go out of their way not to get killed.

Bringing up statistics is far from a sign of insecurity and your stats DO demonstrate your knowledge of the game.

I would not listen to someone who has a K/D ratio of .5 because mine is much higher than his or hers. And nor should I.

That is the reality of it. If you are too sensitive to handle that then I suggest not going to Halo/gaming forums anymore.

By "understand the game" we mean "able to play well online", not "knowing technical stuff".

Comprehension, knowledge, and applied skill aren't directly related.

I can explain in detail the chemical reactions involved in cooking chicken, but for some reason I still burn it every time I cook it. Doesn't mean I don't know anything about cooking chicken - I know a lot about it. Just can't do it.

On the other hand I can pick up just about any FPS game and perform just fine because I have experience in the genre. Doesn't mean I know anything about the game or it's balance. Just means I can work a controller.

If you don't know WHY you're doing what you're doing, no matter how successful that is, then it doesn't matter what you have to say.
