There is a fine line between genius and insanity. I have erased that line.
I could be wrong, but Cortana's line "This is the way the world ends" could be a reference to American-English poet T.S. Eliot's "The Hollow Men." Fascinating poem, along with Eliot's "Wasteland." In "The Hollow Men" the poem ends like this:
This is the way the world ends
This is the way the world ends
This is the way the world ends
Not with a bang, but a whimper.
That's an interesting reference, if it was intended. But I could be drawing random connections where there really are none.
Also, Cortana, at the beginning, sounds a bit like Gravemind. The phrase "I have defied gods and demons" could be referring to Gravemind defying Prophets, and the Master Chief, or it could be referring to the theoretical Forerunner Revolution.
And when Cortana says "I am your shield, and I am your sword.", that may be directed at the Chief. If you think about it, without her, the Chief would hardly ever get anything done.
Thoughts?
