Now I'm interested. Free diagnosis eh? My family also runs an electronic and appliance repair service center authorized by most major brands.

A free estimate is near impossible to do unless you raise the estimate price to accomodate for issues which cannot be resolved until one or more components are replaced or when a unit displays a problem with no obvious solution, which is very often the case.

Free estimates also cause customers to bring in absolute junk and then leave it there because they've put nothing into the unit.

Free estimates can only be offered on units with apparant and known issues and I've come to find any shop offerring something as impractical as this in this line of work isn't worth their salt.

Also, why give the OP so much flak. If you do not have anything to share with him, why not just ignore him?

Lastly, please note, I am not, in any way trying to put you into a negative light. You may very well be able to give free estimates, but it is highly dependent on the types of jobs you do.

Free estimates is the reason why I'm making lots and lots of profit. Customers love my service and the fact that I don't charge them for diagnosing. There are 4 other computer shops in my area that have closed down and mainly because no one wants to pay a $20/$30 heck even a $10 diagnosing fee. This is our 10th year coming up by the way.

I'll take apart a laptop to it's bones, describe the problem and price and if they don't like my pricing, I'll put there laptop back together and give it back to the customer.

They appreciate my honesty and always end up taking a business card, sometimes even 3 to 4 to refer friends and lately I've been getting a lot of referrals.

Business is good and I love my job.

Are you the only technician in your shop? If so, then you can justify the cost of your labor because only you can determine how much money your time is worth. With our business, it's much different. We have employees and overhead to account for, and we cannot afford to waste time looking at junk (this may be due to a city location) that people bring in just because they see free.

In order to meet overhead and turn a profit (our line of work also consists of much more complicated electronics(recievers, tv, amps, etc.)), an up front, credited evaluation is necessary.

I love this lone of work as well and hope business gets even better for you as well.

Forget it man, and get with the countdown. Shake this square world and blast off for Kicksville.

Reach host ranking algorithm: (a*quit_percentage + b*isMexican + c*(1/KDR) + d*hasGuest) * 100
where a > b = d > c

This strategy works for me, in a related sense. I've been doing freelance computer repairs while looking for a more permanent job. To cut a long story short, if I can't offer a solution, I don't charge. On top of that, I'll travel to people (motorbike = superlow fuel costs), so I get referrals. I make decent cash doing it.

Basically this. It's not that people don't care, OP, but the fact remains that:

1) You're employed. This already puts you in a much better position than quite a few people.

2) $8 for a month. Yes, you have bills. Yes, it's Christmas time. But it's really hard to believe you can't squeeze $8 out of the margins somewhere.

Just help the guy or move along. Wow.

Sometimes my Gamestop has free 48-hour passes at the counter.

I'm the only technician who works here. It is a family business and again, I'm only 19 years old. I've taken over the business after my dad had died a year ago on December 27. I'm the owner, the sales man, the technician, the accountant, the jack of all trades.

Deep down, customers don't appreciate the fact that they've been charged for having the technician ONLY to determine the problem and let them know what it is. It just doesn't seem right getting charged for information and on top paying repair fees.

For me, diagnosing takes only 5 minutes on average on most electronics and computers. For laptops at least 10-15 minutes if I have to crack open it up. Another reason why I don't charge. Thanks to my skills, years of experience and knowledge. A lot of it has become common sense and it results into a successful diagnosis and less time consumed. Big companies such as Future Shop and Best Buy have no idea what there doing. Ridiculous diagnosing fees, repair fees and not to mention weeks of waiting for the work to be done. For me, I repair things on the spot and in front of the customer if he has nothing to do and wants to wait. I do my work with honesty and to the best of my ability.

This right here is the key to why our business has made it almost 10 years. And it will continue to be successful.
