@accordingto343

Your one stop shop for all of 343's fabulous errors and ridiculous notions in the Halo lore.

Yeah, you read it for the story, but if things are put in and they aren't explained, it takes you out of the immersion.

You do not read a novel for an explanation. You read it for what it is; a novel.

That makes no sense whatsoever; So me telling people to read the books to understand the story is pointless because it explains nothing?

As if it can't have several roles. That is like saying we drink water because it is water, not because we are thirsty.

  • 12.26.2011 5:31 PM PDT

... you read a book to understand a story you have not even read yet? That's what makes no sense. You read a novel for its story, not to comprehend it. Something cannot be explained until it is told.

It's absurd to complain about the lack of explanation around something that didn't even exist until the novel did. Even more so when we have only a part of the whole.

How else would somebody understand something if that is the only format it is in? Well i guess this is a subjective issue not worth talking about since we all have different reasons on the concept.

I read the book to understand the story.

To understand the story, that means things have to be explained.

Let's for example, do a fan-fic of Star Trek. If I have the captain of a ship arrive to find a station (or another ship) without power, and the entire crew dead, and then NEVER explained why or how, people wouldn't like it. Or they'd complain/point out the quality of the overall tale is worse.

Hence why I would have them discover why the crew is dead and power is out, and in that way, EXPLAIN it.

Not to mention "The Art of War" only uses stories as an example for the concepts, which you are reading to better understand.

Waypoint Moderators aren't really Moderators, just power hungry and its goal is defend their beloved Halo at all costs. (Meaning that they wank Halo too much.)

BS Angel is alleged foe so, be wary of Waypoint and its moderators! Do not attempt to move to Waypoint. Enter your own risk.

*WARNING* IT IS MY OPINION.

Wolver, reading the novel is understanding the story. That is so difficult to understand?

Yes. I needed your vast intellect to quantify it, cheers bud. Can I have your phone number so I can call you in the event of tough decisions? I always struggle to choose between blue or green-topped milk, for example. Don't even get me started on smoked or unsmoked bacon.

Thanks.

You should drink milk, it's good for you and will put hairs on your chest. Besides that, I'm British so if I didn't take milk in my tea I'd be breaking the law. Turkey bacon is bad and you should feel bad.

Still using a pump-action shotgun over 500 years in the future I see.

omg not realistic stop game production plz

Oh boy. I'm not reading through the whole thread of arguments, so sorry, but I'll throw my two cents in.

I have read about a third of the book, and my impressions so far are fairly posotive. It's not perfect but I've found most of the plot engaging enough to continue. My only gripes are:

A) Lucy seems to have lost all Spartan tactical awareness, blindly walking into a corridor despite orders to stay back.

B) Mendez and Halsey whining at each other. It's not that big an issue, but come on, they're not really the type to argue with each other.

C) Brutes working for Elites? The shizzle? I can only see that happening on a VERY small scale, as in less than 50 Brutes. The gigantic majority of Jiralhanae would rather die than work as labourers....

Aside from those I haven't seen any problems. I actually quite like Traviss's characterisation of Parangosky so far.

The point of showing alternate viewpoints is for it to be a more realistic approach seeing how nothing is one sided. That way the reader can put understand both sides of the fence and pick which one they can understand best. Glasslands didn't do that.

The only reason you are saying you "understand now" is because i went through the trouble of pointing it out. If you actually fully read my post before replying you would see that i have been repeating the exact same thing.

It wouldn't be "embarrassing" seeing how this is an internet forum and it is well established we don't get along. It would actually be expected, you clearly don't know either of us.

Karen Also states that she is a reporter not a writer and that she likes re-building people from the ground up.

Business is extremely simple, seeing how the entire point is to make alot of money with little effort. It is how you go about that which makes it complicated. And It has something to do with the discussion because you claimed "microsoft wouldn't let her near halo if she wouldn't do well with it". Which is when i said they don't care long as they make money.

If you don't even remember what you are typing how do you expect to carry this conversation on?

Don't assume that because I'm not stooping to your levels of childish retorts, that I'm admitting that I didn't understand what you said. I understood what you meant the whole, I reiterated what I asked in an attempt to make YOU answer my initial question, since you've spent 3 pages avoiding it.

She 'builds' characters from the ground up because she doesn't write stories for an IP as a fan, doing so would cloud her stance on the story and write something that wouldn't appeal to everybody. Had you read into what I quoted, you would've seen that she quit writing for Lucasarts because they were retconning her work in the Clone Wars cartoon for no reason. Many, many SW fans support her work, even professed fans of the Mando people. If you put alot of effort into writing stories for an establised franchise, and they turned around and negated your work, you'd be angry too. Furthermore, on that point, Lucasarts has to approve the general plot lines of each book. Chewbacca dying, Anakin Solo dying, Mara Jade dying, Jacen Solo becoming a Sith Lord-all controversial issues that were vetted by LA. Don't blame the author for her employers not being happy with her work when they approved it all to begin with.

If Microsoft only cared about the money, they wouldn't have created an entire studio almost entirely comprised of Halo community vets to helm all future Halo work. Your 'business' model is nothing of the sort: the point of a business is to provide a service that is in demand, for a reasonable price to the consumer. If they were truly money-grubbing, people like you and I wouldn't support their products, but we obviously do.

And the problem with me not being able to follow parts of this argument is because you have the grammar structure skills of a preschooler. It's atrocious. At least have the intelligence to counter me point by point and make it coherent, and not like an angry 6th grader.

Good job getting reamed out by Wolverfrog, by the way.

It does not appeal to everybody anyway. Nothing ever has; nothing ever will.

Every time I read a Halo novel, I feel like I'm reading a history book.

It's always "during the year this and this... blah blah blah boring facts about the Halo Universe... blah blah blah then master chief, using his .03748 ounces of finger steroids beat an elite in thumb wrestling in 1.94756 minutes on the fifth planet governed by ONI... blah blah blah."

I prefer real literature, thank you very much.

You are stooping to my level since you are honestly expecting me to explain my opinion, which i will not and is a valid one. Not to mention you keep talking about name calling, yet get on my grammar. In which i get sloppier to make you look like a hypocrite.

Your already on my level and if not you will be because i am not going to further explain my opinion. So we can keep this going until the thread gets locked or you stop.

What does "being a fan" have to do with anything? I don't think Eric was a fan of halo when he was randomly asked to write TFoR in seven weeks. Not to mention the fact that you will get attached and start liking something when you work on it for a period of time.

Your mental. When would microsoft stop making halo games (That make millions) just because bungie left and they own the IP? Anybody with common sense understand why microsoft is keeping halo going. Explain to me the "demand" for Halo Lego's and action figures.

Do you even understand what "Reamed out" means? Wolver didn't phase me whatsoever nor did he do anything. Seeing how several people jumped on him and not me i would say he got "reamed" by your logic. not to mention he started being sarcastic, which normally means he noticed he messed up or wanted to drop the argument.

I'm enjoying it so far, but the one thing I don't like that bugs me is the general attitude of the Elites to humanity. When they just magically decided the betrayal and genocide of their kind by the brutes was okay and they use them as free labour.

It makes no sense.

Just to say the proper review should not be for this book but for the trilogy.

There are problems but it could be better, still its an intro and it needs to be worked on for a little bit more. Sooner or later it will become a better trilogy. A trilogy is one story each book is a part of it. I will not comment until i see its place in the trilogy.

If it works out i will like and accept it. If not then maybe i will not.

Although i will really like a fillup of the time in between the modern day to the start of the halo story. More things with things like the talk about things about old history figures like World War 2 etc.
I would like some made up refrences of time in between the unknown periods

Hear the word of Pharaoh. Build unto me a statue of ridiculous proportion. One billion cubits in height......that I might be remembered for all eternity!

And be quick about it!

I liked it, it had some good character development for pre-existing characters, and interesting new ones. The prospect of the UNSC Infinity is also intriguing.

Grey made valid points on the Glasslands's inconsistencies, etc.

Also, in fact, this book received poor rating because of traviss's poor writing skills and it sounded that she didn't use so much facts from Halo universe.

Look at her star wars novels, it received a lot criticism. It's not surprising that Halo Glasslands received similar results.

I even have read this book personally and I can say, it is horrible book.

And you has a horrible grammar
