She appears in the books "Halo: The Fall of Reach" and "Halo: First Strike" both by author Eric Nyland. They're great, so go read them. You'll find them in every major book store. I doubt very highly that the Spartan in the trailer is anyone but the Master Chief, but it's a cute theory.

I highly doubt they'll try to bring in characters from the books at this point though, when they didn't mention the other surviving Spartans that got back to Earth (Linda, Will, Fred) in Halo 2. They couldn't make the characters fit for people who had only played the games, not read the books.

You should definitely get all three. Fall of Reach takes place before Halo and tells of how the spartans were created. The Flood is basically Halo: CE, but it also tells the point of view of the Elite in charge of the armada (becomes the Arbiter in Halo 2). Finally, First Strike covers the gap between Halo and Halo 2.
