It isn't our shiznit anymore.

I've been in too many threads where one of the first few posters makes either a clever or insightful post and 10 people come in and just hit "quote" then "reply" on the same post, creating a very annoying and distracting quote train. If I do find myself agreeing with a particular comment in a thread but don't want to waste any replies doing so and potentially de-rail the thread, how am I to express my agreement?

Also, please don't even think about posting the "potential for abuse" argument.

I would prefer a "dislike" button. I feel it would get a lot more use around here.

There's a treasure for all of us. For some it's a friend others find a pet and many a lover. The whole adventure is finding where it's hidden.

That treasure doesn't include my avatar, you copycat.

- Treasure Island

I would like the "report" button to automatically give me an option of hiding all the said user's future posts.

Yes, there're too many numbers in my name.

I suspect it would be more insightful for you to quote the person and actually write out your reaction to what they said. Use the beauty of vocabulary and word structure to depict your feelings, not a simple "like" button. That's just too easy.

Adding the like button wouldn't remove the ability to quote and respond, it would just give you a second option.

You can still do that, in fact you could do both: like the comment and also post a response to that comment. Why force people to post a certain way? I thought technology was created in order to make life easier.

It'd be a great way of gauging forum reaction to certain posts without reading through the entire thread, and it would decentivize quote trains.

Ignorant people will tell you we don't have one because "it will get abused". The real reason is the web team A) hasn't moved on to the 4th hotness yet and B) is probably still considering the consequences of social features.

Well, you do make a good point, that you could still reply while being able to like a post.

...and B) is probably still considering the consequences of social features.
A quote from Achronos is telling me Bungie might be moving away from their previous forceful philosophy on the website and leaning towards more social features and overall giving users more privileges:
This is a video game developer's board. A community formed around a shared form of entertainment. Shouldn't I be able to focus on the fun to the exclusion of the "divergent opinions" should I so choose? If I don't really care about learning or interacting or growing with the community, should I have to? Should the community drag me into the light so that it can grow as a whole, and is that growth positive? Or should it let me stay in darkness if I want, perhaps emphasizing the quality of those who do "stand in the light", so to speak?Examples of very little customization and no advanced posting privileges (i.e. embedding pictures) tell me Bungie is (was?) in the business of fostering maturity and civility in the forum through force and restrictions. This created fake maturity in the forum simply because posters had little means to be immature, and the real maturity among the forum was revealed on that day when users figured out how to embed pictures on the forum. This is just my rambling thoughts and predictions though. :)

You have to have a happy balance, because if you have no rules, there will be chaos.

I actually saw that quote (or a VERY similar one) in-thread. I know they're leaning towards socialization but they're smart guys; they know they have to consider how the community will react at least a little bit before going ahead with an idea.

There comes a time in every mans life... and that time is not now.

Some people care too much about title or PPD to hit 'like' rather than post something meaningless.

Plus people will associate it with social networking, which i don't know why thats a bad thing. Anti-social people...

P.S. I don't pan on explaining why I disliked this thread and I will not take a serious look at the idea itself but instead just give my quick opinion on it.

Cortana 5 is a carbon-based lifeform that frequently visits these forums, currently residing in the United States. Practically every male on the site responds to her posts.

The Joyeuse IP Formula

My only concern is seeing such a feature overtaking actual discussion.

I can get fifty likes, but only five replies, as opposed to getting 55 replies in the absence of such a feature. I'm not totally against it, but I think that we need to find out how to maintain a good balance.

It would act much like a poll does at the moment.

Because generally it just encourages contests to have everyone's favorite non-sequitur line rather than insightful continued discussion.

Just look at Youtube.
