You clearly did not read any of the discussion that has go on in this thread. Go ahead and do that now, and see if you still have the same response.

How do you know that the like button would stop users from quote posts?

Although a like button wouldn't get in the way of discussion, some users might, instead of posting what they think about the subject at hand, like some post(s) and leave without adding any discussion or attempting to prove the points of the thought with a post of their own.
The reason people quote train is to show support or agreement of a particular post. The "like" feature streamlines that and makes it easier to show your agreement. It also gives moderators more power to warn or ban people who quote train (if they so choose). Similar to the ignore idea thread, users would have zero excuses to quote train.

Also, I think of it as the ones who simply hit "like" or vote and leave most likely did not have anything discussion worthy to post in the first place. You see it as a potential harm to full-length replies, I see it as helping users contribute to threads they normally would contribute nothing to.

So we want to discourage participating in a discussion with the addition of a feature that would encourage people to be lazy? I say leave it out. If they have nothing to contribute, they can sit back and wait for their chance to contribute.
Why, encouraging "laziness" is the entire reason technology is improved every day! Technology doesn't make a man lazy, that is an excuse. Technology makes life easier, and whether people want to take advantage of that or not is their choice. You can't force contribution, you have to establish the right environment in your website forum to facilitate discussion.

I think a simple thumbs-up and thumbs-down counter on individual posts on the bottom right-hand corner would be alright.
Fair enough. All I'm asking for is a feature that allows users to easily show agreement/support with posts they like (that doesn't derail the thread).

You make it sound like we're adversaries. I'd like to add that we aren't seeing anything, we're presuming it all, and that I am weighing both possibilities, but I believe that the feature would cause more harm than good, simply.

You can't know (for sure) how these sort of things turn out. I believe it won't make as much of a difference as you do, although, I believe it will make a difference.

Yeah I've brought this up before. When people just say "Quote" or "^^Nice" it annoys me. I think a light button would clean it up, or even and upvote or something. Maybe just a green septigon.

Spread the love...

I'm personally all for it. Maybe they should just test it in a single forum at first or something.

Nah, depending on which forum you test it on, you'll have a very different reaction. I say, if we test it, just turn it fully on for all forums and see what happens.

Ironically, if such a feature did what it is capable of doing, there's a possibility he would have seen the applicable posts.

"We live in a special time; the only time where we can observationally verify that we live in a very special time" - Lawrence Krauss.

I was a finalist :P

Perhaps if it were solely used to rate the thread, the total number of likes or dislikes would be shown on the forum topics page, next to the forum topic title. Everyone who chooses to either like or dislike, will have their votes tallied and placed next to the thread title to be seen by all browsing.

Sort of like:
[Thread title (as it appears on the forum main page)] | [X] Likes, [Y] Dislikes.

Perhaps the same can be done for posts inside a thread (but you could only choose to like a post). I think this feature would reduce mass quoting of a same users posts, but it doesn't matter what I think. It should be tested to determine how beneficial it actually is.

OP - You're a dumbass with the reading comprehension skills of a second grader.

Can someone tell me what's wrong with these two, this made me LOL hard.

This isn't youtube. People will probably like more posts by popular members, overused memes and someone saying, "I hate x user! Like if you agree!" or something like that.

  • 12.23.2011 1:58 AM PDT

I remember when I used this space to put cool looking links to my chapters back in the day. I don't even know why I'm using it now. Why are you even reading this? You must be interested in me. Still reading?

Well, sorry but potential for abuse is a biggie.

Anyways, I would like the idea if it weren't abused. Err... I went back to that. Let me start over. It would be nice but everything would be liked and it... put it this way: No, for the same reason we cannot see post count.

No -blam!-... But why would making it more "Facebook-esque" change your experience? So people have an easier way to express and acknowledge they're approval and endorsement of a post you make without taking up space by merely "this"-ing something or just quoting it... So what?

The only "repercussions" (if you can call them that) is that some people will get fewer (entirely pointless) posts in their threads from "this"s. I'll admit, I "this" things; who doesn't? But that's honestly ONLY for a lack of a better medium through which to express the simplest form of agreeance.

So, let's count the actual cons in your argument: ... ... ... 1. You have 1 illegitimate point to back up your "rebuttal". Try again, please.

I honestly don't think it would. And liking EVERYTHING would probably be the same as post a -blam!-load of "this" posts as far as moderation would be concerned. What if you only have 5 likes per day (resetting at the time you used your first like from the previous day, or 12 am PST)? People'd have to manage their likes and only use them on posts you REALLY thought were good posts. This "fear" of running out of likes and managing them could very easily cause people to not even use all their likes from a day.

(Also, they wouldn't carry over. If you use 2 likes in any given day, then it strikes midnight or whenever the reset time is, you don't now have 8 likes.)

I don't think it would really help to accomplish anything here. Usually, a like button lets people find the most popular content. That's kinda nice, but I'm usually looking for the most correct stuff, you know? If someone's asking a question, they want to see the post that answers it, not the post that people laughed at the most.

I just saw a green monkey nut shot a small tan lizard(?) in a gunny sack.

If a like system is implemented, I'll probably never come to the mains again. I don't need my screen cluttered with thumbs-up everywhere.

I've actually grown to like Halo Waypoint's "Thank" feature.
At the bottom of each post the people who thanked the topic is displayed, and the number of thanks a person has received is shown on their profile. It does act a bit like a "like" button at times, but generally speaking, the system works fine.

I would be against the whole Up/Down, dimming, etc though.

Why does it have to be cluttered. They would obviously try to make it well designed.

By any chance do you visit other web forums? Post count and proper posting tools (i.e. picture embedding) are the most basic items virtually every forum has. Something tells me there is either a very irrationally paranoid reason or a simple technical reason B.net isn't set up like most websites and gives its users the normal amount of rights and privileges as everywhere else on the internet.

It would be worth trying on a trial basis. Bungie could always try out new ideas and then decide whether or not to implement them on a permanent basis.

I believe a "like" button would definitely cut back on some of the unnecessary quoting.
