How do you know that the like button would stop users from quote posts?
Although a like button wouldn't get in the way of discussion, some users might, instead of posting what they think about the subject at hand, like some post(s) and leave without adding any discussion or attempting to prove the points of the thought with a post of their own.The reason people quote train is to show support or agreement of a particular post. The "like" feature streamlines that and makes it easier to show your agreement. It also gives moderators more power to warn or ban people who quote train (if they so choose). Similar to the ignore idea thread, users would have zero excuses to quote train.
Also, I think of it as the ones who simply hit "like" or vote and leave most likely did not have anything discussion worthy to post in the first place. You see it as a potential harm to full-length replies, I see it as helping users contribute to threads they normally would contribute nothing to.

So we want to discourage participating in a discussion with the addition of a feature that would encourage people to be lazy? I say leave it out. If they have nothing to contribute, they can sit back and wait for their chance to contribute. Why, encouraging "laziness" is the entire reason technology is improved every day! Technology doesn't make a man lazy, that is an excuse. Technology makes life easier, and whether people want to take advantage of that or not is their choice. You can't force contribution, you have to establish the right environment in your website forum to facilitate discussion.

I think a simple thumbs-up and thumbs-down counter on individual posts on the bottom right-hand corner would be alright.Fair enough. All I'm asking for is a feature that allows users to easily show agreement/support with posts they like (that doesn't derail the thread).
