Subject: So why no "like" button?

This isn't youtube. People will probably like more posts by popular members, overused memes and someone saying, "I hate x user! Like if you agree!" or something like that.
Nobody has yet to come up with a convincing argument as to why this is such a bad thing for the forums when compared with what happens already.

Meh, I see a lot of stupidity as a result.

You're right. And I'm not just saying that to agree with a Ninja, it's because Liking is much better than the alternative.

That thread got completely derailed because Urk posted. However, if "liking" was there, then everyone could simply "like" Urk's post, then post something else. This would cause a much more on-topic discussion and lead the thread into a better direction than a bunch of people spamming quotes.

Whoo.

A quote is a far more effective way of conveying that you agree with someone than a "like".

Plus a like button simply won't work right in this enviroment, unless Bungie overhauls the whole system to the point where it's no longer identifyable then maybe likes could work.

Why force people to post a certain way?
Last time I checked "not posting" isn't a sub-category of "posting".

Just because it happens doesn't mean we should facilitate and encourage it.
Spamming shock sites happens too, should we put in a "JOHN CENA" button?

It's superficial garbage. Agreeing with someone does not contribute to or further a discussion.

Precisely why there should be an option to rate a post without replying to it - to discourage people from making pointless replies that get in the way of an actual discussion being had while still being able to contribute in some way.

Uh, what? Was that supposed to be an analogy to something?

If we did have this, most people would only be pressing the like button instead of actually responding.

Only the people who actually had something worth while to say would respond while the people who don't can still contribute without getting in the way.

Except that a reply is far more effective than a like.

If someone says something and twenty people quote him then that'll be a far more effective way of saying "The public agree with this person" than him having thousands of likes.

People like frivolously, likes have no meaning, quoting someone on the other hand does.

Not to mention that allowing people to like would actually stifle discussion MORE than disallowing them to like, when people simply quote someone and leave nothing they feel guilty, which is why there are so many posts of people quoting someone they agree and then elaborating on that point.

The idea is that if you're following the line of logic "People quote people so like" then you must also follow the line of logic "People spam shock sites so JOHN CENA". The idea of the buttom is that you hit it and it automatically posts "JOHN CENA" and a link to a shock site.

Well, I don't really see discussion being very influenced by the addition of a like button. The only problem I see with it are people whoring for likes or making it not worth it in some other way.

It would still take away some of the discussion value of a thread.

Actually no, by removing all the useless BLAM that just derails discussion, the discussion value of the thread would go up not down.

What are you talking about? A like button wouldn't stop the problem of people derailing threads.

Maybe not all, but it would remove posts like this. These people, instead of just quoting to show agreement or recognition for urk's post, are derailing the thread. Why not give them the option to show that recognition with a discrete yet useful like button that wont get in the way and won't derail discussion.

I guess that it would help a bit, but I just think that it would make people click the like button and not actually post their opinion on the subject (like forum polls).

Absolutely disagreed.

When you look at a site like slashdot, you can see how discussions are kept in focus because of the rating that posts receive. Higher rated posts get bumped, pushed up, floated, etc... because people agree with or like it, thus the effectiveness of using a rating option.

Reposting what someone else has said is pointless, distracting, annoying, spammy, contributes nothing new to the discussion, and cannot ever hope to be as effective in the same manner as outlined above. Ironically, yet again, this same kind of reposting has been going on in this very thread; people open the topic, might read the OP, then make a reply based on that alone. There's no way for them to identify what good/bad points have been made to reply to because they're buried pages upon pages deep.

How do you solve that problem with the existing forum setup?

How would that work on B.net? Everyone's posts would be out of order and the conversation would be all over the place.

Why does everyone want Bungie.net like Facebook?
What the hell? Do you know what you're saying?

What is wrong with a Facebook-esque feature (there's an empty spot in my heart right now for not using the Facebook-"like" feature pun) on the site? Tell me a down side of the like button. I bet you twenty bucks it's irrelevant and is out-weighed by the pros.

Exactly. People who are skimming the replies to a OP, they will most likely only look at the top rated comments. The low rated comments that could be great replies are left out with no one to see them.

While I disagree with the ability to order posts by popular majority, I do think we should have a like button. Though it may become a popularity contest in the flood, I think that it could work as a legitimate end to "this" and requote posts considering it could be made against the rules with the implementation of the like button (as the like button fulfills the objectives of posts like that).

...if that makes sense.
