So only popular people have the right to an opinion?
I see what you're getting at, but no, of course not. It doesn't even happen all that often on other sites.

Posted by: Breadisgood91
How would that work on B.net? Everyone's posts would be out of order and the conversation would be all over the place.
How about an option to switch between chronological listing of posts, top rated posts, lowest, etc... then you can keep it the same way it is now if you wanted to. The only difference is that you could instantly switch to looking at some of the best arguments made in the topic (or the result of some other filter).

I go on reddit all the time, because of the upvote/downvote system I only bother reading the top comment and it's replies.

Of course this isn't really an arguement against a like system that's implemented like facebook, more one that centers around upvotes and downvotes of posts, I know I'd never scroll down far enough to read the more unpopular members posts.

Of course this doesn't mean an upvote/downvote system is entirely out of the question either, it would simply need to be implemented in a certain manner to function correctly.

  • 12.23.2011 7:27 PM PDT

How about as a privilege? Or at least being a member for a certain amount of time before being able to cast a vote? That would stop many people creating alts just to upvote their own posts.

  • 12.23.2011 7:31 PM PDT

That'd work. The like button would work with restrictions that were correctly attended to.

This is not YouTube.
...

See what I mean?

I don't think a "like" feature will prevent people from reposting something, but in fact, encourage others to do so, so they can whore ratings. Just look at Youtube...

Perhaps ... but then we need to come up with a system for that and a way to moderate said system, because unless a upvote/downvote is a action on par with say a ban the system will be equally suceptible to the "Upvote the popular people" thing. And psrt of the point of the system is for the layman to upvote instead of quoting, won't making it so you have trust invalidate said purpose?

I was thinking a little more like keeping the same format but having a "Most important comments" section, so people can just scroll the highlights of the 25 posts on the page.
We could also have a "Downvoted to hell" section.

As long as the comments are divided in 25 comment bites there's a nice probability they'd all be read.

Actually, it decreases useless "contribution" to the discussion. The ability to like is the equivalent of a "this", a "QFT", or a requote post.

Are those kinds of post "superficial garbage"? A like is mean to imply and show agreement with a post. If we can do that without cluttering up the screen with useless posts that actually take up a lot of space, then I'm all for it.

Why does everyone want Bungie.net like Facebook?
What the hell? Do you know what you're saying?

What is wrong with a Facebook-esque feature (there's an empty spot in my heart right now for not using the Facebook-"like" feature pun) on the site? Tell me a down side of the like button. I bet you twenty bucks it's irrelevant and is out-weighed by the pros.

I like to think the regulars of (at least the Septagon on) Bungie.net are more mature than the unwashed masses that are Youtube users.

Even so, posting something totally irrelevant for likes would be spam... and people get called out on making useless posts here all the time. I don't think like-whoring would go over too well.

Okay. That's the flood. Doesn't seem to be relevant in a discussion of civilized people using a new social feature on a game forum.

Also, you're ideas are baseless and have no reasoning behind them whatsoever. Mine do. Youtube is nothing like a forum. Youtube comments are supposed to be short blurbs about a video you just watched. -blam!-, they have a 500 character limit. People are bound to write short, stupid, "whore"-y comments (as it's the norm). On here we're supposed to be stimulating and participating in discussion.

It's a different environment.

This is like if you tried to compare the audiences of a movies reaction to a jump scare to the reaction of a reader reading a murder scene in a book. They're two different (re)actions with two different mediums. While they both serve the purpose of entertaining the consumer with a story [in Youtube and BNets case, get across a point among other people about something that has been posted], it's done in entirely different ways.

We've got one account running around spamming shock site links for up to an hour without being caught, and you're suggesting that these would get caught often? Probably not, unless people reported it like they should (which they don't).

also...

It's hardly spam when it's a small bit of blue text under a post saying "HaloSpaartan117 likes this". If that's what constitutes annoying spam that interrupts your viewing of a thread, then you need to learn some self control and ignore that little bit of size 12 font blue text.

Please excuse me while I stand over here and laugh my ass off. That is single handedly one of the most arrogant statements I have ever heard.

OT: YouTube comments are supposed to be for discussion or feedback, otherwise they wouldn't be there. What purpose would a statement about the video serve? No one cares what someone says about the video if it doesn't attack someone else's views.

If you disagree with someone on a particular topic, and most people don't agree with your view, would you want your opinion to be buried/ignored because it doesn't have enough "likes"? Well, let me answer for you; Of course you don't. You want your voice heard, such is the human condition. Eventually this is what Bnet will be degraded to if this like system was implemented. Don't believe me? Go look at Reddit/YouTube/343/any other forum with this...

Because some people want to show agreement, without having to write 2 paragraphs about why they agree with something. Sometimes agreement can be taken as it is and doesn't need an explanation behind it.

If you made a post about AR v.s. BR in the Reach Forum (hypothetically), and I really liked it, but it was a short post. 2 sentences. I'm not going to write out in my post that I'm going to make (while making other points afterwards):
Posted by: Breadisgood91
The BR is much more accurate than the AR and is much more effective in all the variable ranges. Why do you think they use it in MLG?
I agree with this post. I agree with it because of the fact that I, too think that the BR is better at all the ranges. Also, it is used in MLG because it's the superior gun. That is why I agree with you.

that would be silly. Don't you agree? Well what other way is there to show agreement other than an explanation of why you agree (which is redundant) or "this"-ing a post without a 'like' feature?

At the very least can you accept the idea that people are going to "this" and "QFT" anyway and the presence of a "like" button would reduce these considering people don't have to requote, this etc...?
