So I downloaded the remastered Marathon Durandal from the LIVE marketplace a while back and I have to say it's pretty freakin' awesome for a game of its age. Did anyone here play it on Mac back in the day? I'm a little late to the party. Was Durandal better than Marathon and Marathon: Infinity in your opinion?

Edit: Thanks for the educated responses :) I must add that, even if M2 was added to the XBLA in an "ad hoc" manner, it would be fantastic to see the other Marathon games ported to complete the collection. I mean, you only have the opportunity to play the second one on the 360. Unfortunate.

The world is full of mysteries, and shares too few of the answers required. An example of which, is how did I end up in the Brute Zone?

I never played the others, I started with Marathon: Durandal on the XBLA, it is awesome.

Finally a Marathon thread! Or rather, a thread other than Halo.

This makes me happy.

I for one, absolutely love Marathon, and truly admire the storyline, even more so than Halo.

Shocking?

Not really, although it may joust your spirit to know that I hand wrote every singe terminal word by word in the first game.

While I am not as big a fan as the gameplay in the other two, I am recently debating whether or not to do the same for them.

Anyways, my thoughts in a nutshell:

Marathon has superior aspects opposed to Doom, the rival of the day. It is fun and has great replay value, as I am playing it to this day. Additionally, the first one had better gameplay, primarily due to the lack of music in the other two. Music is what makes a good game.

Oh, and Durandal is an honestly outstanding character. I learned a lot of philosophy from this AI through the game. I can't think of any other game that makes one contemplate life as much as Marathon did. It is simply fantastic.

Ive always hoped that they would port the others. The M2 xbla port came about in a very ad hock manner though, so its not likely (Freeverse pitched it to bungie out of the blue and they said yes)

While I wouldn't dare question your devotion Scott, Hamish already took care of it.

With the latest version of Aleph One, it is easier than ever to play the entire Marathon trilogy. Go get it today and spend the rest of your Christmas break engrossed in the unrivaled sci-fi story. Or take a break from slaughtering Pfhor and contemplating the nature of freedom to enjoy some netgames with FCAW.

I have difficulty choosing a single favorite Marathon game. Marathon 1 has some of the most memorable terminals. Marathon 2 is the easiest to understand. Marathon Infinity, while confusing, is the perfect end to the series. I prefer to look at the series as a whole rather than focusing on games individually.
