Subject: To Join or Not to Join...... That is the question.

It does not happen as much as it used to, but I am sure most of you in the community have experienced receiving Bungie.net Private Group invites.

I personally have received many in the past, there were some that I joined and some that I did not. The ones that I joined were mostly groups that had something to do with the things that I was interested in at the time.

My question to you guys is, when you receive a private message asking you to join a group, what is the deciding factor for you joining the group or not?

I don't have one.
I don't think I've ever joined a group that I've been invited to in that fashion before.

I only join groups that I want to join. Not groups other people want me to join.

If I know the person pretty well, and the group looks interesting, I'll certainly join.

Have you seen my mind anywhere? I seem to have lost it...

I have seen you future

I will join the group if I know whoever sent it, or if the group seems interesting. Often I'll join a group that doesn't fit the criteria, see if I like it and decide if I want to stay.

  • 12.23.2011 10:09 AM PDT

I don't have a deciding factor, I just know I'm not going to join.

Hi there! be sure to click that homepage link!

If I had known there was a limit for the number of groups you could join, I'd be thinking twice every time.

If I get an invite to a group, that group is immediately on my blacklist (not that it matters, usually the only people sending those invites are trying to build up their group of 5 members that will inevitably fail).

Although, it's been a long time since I've been sent one of those PMs. It's been rather .. peaceful.

OP - You're a dumbass with the reading comprehension skills of a second grader.

Can someone tell me what's wrong with these two, this made me LOL hard.

I don't join groups unless one of my friends invites me (asking me via Xbox Live, face to face or through PM's). If they leave, then I leave the group myself. Can't be a group without friends, right?

I got them all the time. I always thought I was getting a PM from someone cool about something interesting but nope. :(

I am suddenly reminded of the phrase: "I would not be a member of a club that would have me..."

An invitation to join a group could be the thing that completely changes your experience here. I am sure we can all agree that knowing the person sending the invitation and finding something interesting about the group are important.

What are the specific personal lures that motivate you to join a group. I would love to see this question answered from a very specific perspective as to WHY you join a group.

Do you prefer general chatter among an exclusive guest list?

Do you look for people who want to play games?

Do you seek out artists who can share in some creativity?

Picture your ideal group. What do those people do together?

I join and check it out as long as there is a link in the PM regardless of who's sending it.

Well we used to have The Boobs thread but now we're just complaining about novelties.

I would join a group that I'm interested in but it seems like not every user can be a group manager. Inactivity is also a curse for small groups.

No, just if I know people who are in it.

Do you look for people who want to play games?Nope.

Do you seek out artists who can share in some creativity?Sometimes.

1. I like a big open discussion board.

2. Not necessarily, I look for broad amounts of topics to discussed.

3. Sure.

4. I think the perfect group would be the septagon, but in private form. It's big and there's lots of discussion. The group has a scope beyond something finite.

Allow me to summon the lowdown, the scoop, the skinny...

Personally, I look at who the people are. If they are smart funny, and honorable users, I am usually inclined to join their chapter, at least for some time.

I usually tend to tell whether or not they are good people by their postings on the main forum boards. Normally, I am a good judge of character.

This is more of a science than an art in mysticism, as humans have noteworthy characteristics that don't change at their core. Think about it. People may often, and often they do wear personality masks, however they tend to emit the same personal traits throughout their life, as the sun rains radiation on us.

If such traits are compatible to mine, and conflicting only in arguments, I find that such people are good partners to me in any organization including Bungie.net private chapters.

  • 12.23.2011 10:41 AM PDT

I immediately look away if it's a group invitation from somebody I do not know. Oh I'll read the whole thing, sure (which, come to think of it, is a waste of time), but my mind is made up long before then. ESPECIALLY if it's some copy and pasted message.

Fun fact: When I was early in my Bnet years, I was once threatened with a ban because I sent one to a moderator. He was incredibly rude about it too, hah.

I find that it is less important that the list is exclusive, and more important that the group is reasonably active. No matter who is in the group they will usually end up with an interesting dynamic, as long as there are enough active people for that to develop.

Do you look for people who want to play games?
This is a plus, it could be video games, but forum games are also fun to have around.

Do you seek out artists who can share in some creativity?
Personally I do not, but that is because I am not an artist.

Picture your ideal group. What do those people do together?
In my ideal group the members are all there to hang out together and discuss just about anything. The group would have gamenights, but they would not be the primary attraction. The rules would be pretty lax, so everyone could just chill. Also, membership is open.

Well, here we are. I guess that it was destined to come to this.

I am a terrible group member. I only belong to one and my visits/participation is part of my duties.

I (sadly or honestly, take your pick) haven't seen anything offered by a private group that interests me enough to pull me from public forum participation.

It's me, not you, my own flaw and I have to learn to live with it.

You do need to live with your flaw on your own, you're right.

But there are just far too many people here in the public forums for you to be on your own. Why not join my nice little private group? Then you can avoid all the commoners.
:P
