It's all debatable dude. Jumping helps tremendously if you know what you're doing. Especially if you have your sword out and the ball carrier tries to punch you. Just jump back from him and then lunge for the kill after they try punching you. Jumping can also fool people if you know how to hammer jump WHILE grabbing the ball. I've jumped over all my opponents to plant the bomb doing that.

Also, if you are really good with the bomb you don't need to have a clear path. Hell, I've planted it by myself before with no help from teammates. And trust me, it wasn't luck either. I knew what I was doing. I'm not trying to be a prick or argue. I'm just simply saying that different methods are debatable as to what's best...

I know it doesn't need to be clear, but my team likes to be sure, working as a team and all. Whilst playing it myself I've multiple times leapt over enemies heads, using their own hammer swings to launch myself almost all the way to the plate. It's just that if one of them turns out to be smart when you're doing that, you're pretty much screwed.

Every single pummel I have is unboosted.

I hit inheritor 14/1/12. 16 months after release. I have a life fellas.
Every single killionaire I have is unboosted. 22 from grifball, 4 from LD.

Grifball takes zero skill unless you're actually playing the game the way you should. Spawn campers are just losers, but getting that timing on the hammer swing absolutely perfect is quite tricky.

I'm willing to bet that half of the people that play Grifball don't even know what a Blocker is... In my Grifball team, our bomb carrier won't try to plant until he has a perfectly clear path with no chance of failure, which is why the other three have the hammer's timing almost perfect.

Now, the problem is, nobody else ever takes the game seriously, so most often we end up completely tearing into the enemy team. So no, this phase of Grifball is not competitive, it's turned into a fun playlist where you can get lots of kills and go around hitting stuff.

And here's some advice to everyone... In Vanilla Grifball, unless you're launching yourself or going for an awesome bomb plant, DON'T JUMP! It just makes you an easy target.

Couldn't of said better.
The way I learned how to use a hammer properly is getting a friend in a custom game and measuring how far the hammers range is.
As for the jumping bit, I'm pretty sure this doesn't count for flowering too?
