isn't the halo stories about defending earth, fighting for humanity...isn't that the point of stopping halo?
Not really. The war with the Covenant is a big part of the story, but given that the name of the series is Halo, not The Covenant War, you can assume that the story revolves around the purpose the rings were built for: to stop the flood. The reason Master Chief defends Earth is because it's his home, would you not do the same?
but maybe some of his pals...say other spartans make apperances finally? Maybe Dr. Halsey?
Highly probable. I say this because the trilogy of books outlines were developed by Bungie, in the so-called 'Halo Bible' (at least, from what I've read anyway), and therefore there must be a purpose for several of the other SPARTANs to have survive, and for Dr. Halsey to have taken off with Kelly. All will be revealed.
And how about the launch date on Halo 3?? 2007??
It seems logical. You have to remember that when they started this game the technology to design games for the 360 was still primitive at best, and given how much they are pushing the capabilities of the 360 so early in its life, they will need all the time they can get to make sure the game is flawless.
thats a long time and I think for microsoft to try and take hype away from the PS3 that they need something to counter it
I think Microsoft have always known that a game cannot take away the hype of a console. The prices for a start mean that the game would be small change, and anyone who can afford to buy both consoles would easily be able to buy both the game and the console. Ignoring that, if Microsoft leave Sony to their own devices, Sony will destroy their place in the console market soon enough, given what I've read on the reports of E3.
My theory:
Master Chief's return to Earth on-board the forerunner ship is followed by a long battle on that ship as he tries to kill Truth. Truth escapes and brutes cover him as he does, leaving Master Chief to kill those and find a way off the ship. Whether it has landed at this point or not I'm not sure. Not really a big issue, if it hasn't he'll find a way to get back onto one of the orbital platforms or straight down to the surface, the outcome is the same either way.
Master Chief makes it to the Ark, that forerunner structure in the trailer (this is practically undisputable at this point, as it sends out a pulse similar to what we saw building at the end of Halo 2, clearly meant to trigger the other installations for a simultaneous culling of all organic matter), and has to fight his way inside. It is at this point (or perhaps on the orbital platforms, again depending on where the forerunner ship is when he exits it) where he meets up with the other SPARTANs.
With their help he makes it inside, and they attempt to deactivate the structure and nullify the pulse. The flood make their appearance and Gravemind attempts to destroy the structure also, having learnt of its purpose. Realising this, Master Chief changes his plan, and instead of trying to deactivate the rings, he is forced to fight against the flood and make sure the remaining halos activate to destroy the flood.
The Arbiter will also play some part in fighting against the flood, though it may not be on Earth (given an ambiguous situation: does he have any way to get there?), and he may instead be trying to deactivate the rings because he hasn't realised the futility of trying to fight against the flood in normal combat.
That's about all I can theorise.
