I shall throw in the mandatory unrequisitioned vote: I think it is the AR, but here's what I'm thinking would be cool:
Battle Rifle - Return in H3 EXACTLY AS IS - With optional full auto mode when un-zoomed and make the zoom mode 3X instead of 2X. It would make a little clearer the distinction between the AR and the BR and make up for all those times that your opponent was *just a little too far away* to shot them with the BR zoomed.
Assault Rifle - Return in H3 with a 60 round clip, longer barrel for better accuracy, and a mix of rounds that can be utilized. I think in First Strike some of the 'new' (Halo 2) weapons utilized the same ammo, so this would make the AR a bit more balanced as it would have its own unique ammunition that could be hard to find - but too, think about this...
In the books, and in a classical weapon's setting, there are 3 types of rounds:
Shredder - I'm not 100% on this, but the shredder rounds could be fragmentary rounds that enter the body and separate upon exit, causing more damage. Think of the purple mist from an elites head with these babies!
HE - High Explosive - Can you say human needles that travel super-sonic?
Normal - A typical bullet, goes in one side and out the other.
Now that the X360 has the secondary finger triggers, I'd love to see more changes like these implemented. One for changing which grenade you use and another to manipulate some kind of weapon toggle. It would be insane.
H3 is THE reason I'm going to buy a 360 and I have faith that it will be awesome. I think in general the weapons from H2 need more work than those in H1 strictly because of the disappearing bullets syndrome. Shoot a wall with the H2 shotty, back up 30 feet, and shoot again, the bullets don't hit - they disappear! The same thing happens with the SMG - its this unreasonable effect that lends itself to the 'wft!' moments - but it can all be fixed.
Oh yah, I want a pelican too.

The fix for the needler is easy too - make the rounds travel faster. Give them say 50% more oomph! and it would work. BOOMIE!
