That structure looked identical to the massive underground room the Spartans found on Reach, with the physics-distorting stone in the middle. Both were underground (the Earth version is clearly excavated), both are a few kilometers in diameter, both have a hole in the roof centre, both are circular, and both are very interesting to the Covenant.

it's the planet's afterburner.

lol, it would most likely be the arc, considering thats why the cov are on earth, but they didnt seem prepared for it to open judging by how they reacted when it did.

when i watched the trailer, the covi ships got hit by the the shockwave of the big door thingies opening, it kind of pushed them a little and then u can see their engines fire up and they start to propell themselfs away from the "artifact"

It may be a bit off topic, but has anyone thought of how the tattered remains of the covenant actually managed to overrun the entire human forces on earth? Whilst in the middle of their own civil war. Is it just me or did the banshees flying close to masterchief not seem to take much notice of him at all...leading to the possibility that they may be elite controlled who managed to reach the arc first. just an idea

Well that's an open-ended question, isn't it?

Maybe it's...
1. Communicating with other forerunner installations OR
2. Destroying the universe OR
3. Destroying itself OR
4. Opening a portal (to an alternate universe where forrunners still exist) OR
5. Changing the laws of physics

Or my favorite....
6. Designing Halo 3. Master Chief is really just standing around, waiting for the game to be done so he can get back to fragging. =)

95% change its the Ark, i saw a Concept art on the Special DVd, Where It Shows the Same Structure as that Forerunner Structure, and a name above it : ARK and X-oo1 or Something

and the Function of the Ark is, if one of the Seven Halos Countdown is stopped, All Halos go's on Standby Mode, and then u can Put all the Halo's Countdown on at the Ark, and Most Likely , the Ark is on Earth

btw: when i saw it, i Thought about the SAme form as the gun under The Alien Ship at the Movie: Independence day

( i hope irl, im gonna dig hole Africa out =P )

It looks like a weapon of last resort.

well, more or less i guess. either communicating with the other Halo's or Activating them, unless it isnt the ark.

I'd have to say, from the evidence given to us, that it isn't the Arc, explanation here.

It definatly looks like its opening now:
Notice the difference in these two images:
Image 1
Image 2
There is a change in the gap between these two platforms, which suggests its opening. Also the 2 rows of hooks on top of those flaps look like that one goes on one platform and one goes on another, to hold them together, kinda also sounds like the doors when you are entering the (via the lift mechanism) library on halo 2.

The structure is being activated because of when Miranda Keys pulled the Icon out of the control room in TGT (The Great Journey), when 343GTS says that the other rings are ready for remote activation, the structure IS the Ark

I wouldn't stare at the trailer too much trying to find hidden meaning. Its just a show case of what its going to be like. It's not likely that that's going to be in the game. The ark will be in the game and on earth. I'm wondering if there will be forerunner weapons down there (it looks rather large. The trailer shows the masterchief on the surface so i guess the forerunner ship lands.

I have a feeling that humans won't beat the covenant. Maybe everyone will say sorry and shake hands.
