Throughout CE, many people would have LOVED an online option. With respect to the people at Bungie, they probably did not realize how huge CE would become. Many people began LAN parties, and created their own game options, for example, some groups enjoyed no radar, while others preferred a gametype with no shields.
When Halo 2 was released, many hoped they would be able to host gamestypes they had created on Halo CE. XBL would serve as a searching tool to find a gametype that you would enjoy playing. This was not the case, and matchmaking became the experience of online play. If you wished to play a custom game, you had to search the Bungie Boards or join a group, and not everyone is on the Bungie Boards. Some people just enjoy playing with a group they get along with, and consistently have good games with for multiple games in a row (an example in Battlefield 2 for the PC, or the Rainbow 6 Series for the Xbox).
Here's the question:
Would you like to see an unranked search option in Halo 3 for customized games?
This would be useful, because so many people have many different kinds of games they enjoy playing (SWAT and Rumble Hardcore come to mind in Halo 2). With a search option, these gametypes would become available, and Bungie would have to work less to satisfy gamers who want varied gametypes. People don't like the BR start? They wouldn't have to start with it if they could search for a game where people felt the same way. Matchmaking could still be avalible, because many gamers love matchmaking and the ranking system, but adding a search feature would also be a positive for people who enjoy playing unranked games, or playing with a group of people for a number of games in a row.
