I'm by no means a pro, BUT I could more than hold my own. You have made an incorrect overly broad statement here. True, many do want it back, but I could also turn it around and say that most of the people that want it back feel overpowered by the SMG. Just because the one person I presented to was an example of this doesn't mean that all (or even most) of you are unskilled like that fellow.

A lot of it just comes down to playstyle preference. I enjoy mid range combat. Having battle rifle starts to me have improved the game dramaticly. Others that enjoy close quarters combat hate the change. But, I would say most people enjoy mid to long range combat. Every FPS I've played online everyone would run for the sniper first thing, even if it wasn't very usefull for what we were doing. When I played Battlefield 1942, I'd look to see what everyone was doing and would see about half of people using snipers, even though it really wan't helpfull to our cause. And what was I using? Mostly the sniper rifle:o) People kill their own team mates just to get the sniper rifle.

In smaller maps the BR to me IS a good replacement for the old pistol. But, in a lot of maps, it just doesn't have the range or accuracy to make in enjoyable. Can I kill someone from half way across BG or all the way across HH with a pistol? Yes. Can I do it in three shots every time? Hell no!!! Some very few can, but I sure can't. In such cases I could easily go through a whole clip and never finish the person off. Not all of the "skill" comes in shooting, some of it comes in how well you can dance.

I totally and utterly agree with ravage386, it is a million times more mentally stimulating and fun to have a rock, paper, scisors weapon set, where no single weapon has all the favorable characteristics, and therefore, is not the only thing weilded by an entire team. it is much more satisfying to be able to dominate with a variety of weapons (perhaps having a favorite, but only because that is your style of play) to him i say, amen brother

i read a few posts and was fed up by the firsts
the only reason "everyone" wants it back is because it took no skill whatsoever to use
now it wasnt inbalance because everyone had one at the begining of a slayer match
but i believe what takes skill if say you were playing 4v4 on ascension
now everyone knows to take the snipers and the towers in that level and control them
i believe to kill a sniper who can shoot quicker faster and probally better than you could with your starting weapon would be skill

but then again another reason i think "everyone" and in my opinion everyone is those damn MLG punks. yea i think theyre little -blam!-es not because of their name or how "good" they are its only because they could kill you with that damn pistol and not pick up another weapon for the whole game.

No weapon is without skill. Even the rocket needs to be aimed and placed. If there were no skill, I could spawn and start shooting without ever moving and kill anything on the map, even targets behind me.

aka modding. not to flame, tho. all weapons require skill, but if possible, none should dominate.

I think every weapon needs skill, how else could you pull the trigger?

Seriously though. A comment like that is best left unsaid, it only shows your missing the point that others are raising.

On that poster's brilliant little nugget-o-truth, I think I'll call my particpation in this thread over.

Yes but don't forget the shotgun its range needs to bea little longer and you should get headshots with it AND the shots should spread out like real shotguns do. The sword should run on power and the explosions of the RL and nades should be a little bigger. Also they need heart shots where it hurts somebody more if they get hit in the heart.

And yes i know i already said this but if they do all that and make the pistol more like halo1 and put a scope on it will be an even better game. Please bungie please make the guns like i listed and i am so glad the assault rifle is gonna be in thanks.

You are incorrect, the default settings on a slayer match in halo did not spawn you with a pistol. Slayer Pro spawned you with the pistol. If you consider the pistol to involve no skill, that is your opinion but i suggest you revisit the aiming system in Halo. Or better yet watch one of the numerous videos depicting the differences.

In respond to people who want the Pistol back:

I understand what you want. You think that if the pistol is back, Halo 3 will automatically become as good as halo 1. It's just simply not the case. Here is what I think Bungie could do to drastically improve Halo 3 over halo 2:

1. Implement a better spawning system for players.
- In Halo 2, the spawns are pretty much random and your team mates have little to no control over them. In Halo1, your teammates were the sole factor in your spawn. This added a whole new layer to the game. Here is an example:

Lets say you are playing a 2v2 on Hang Em High and you are in control of the blue base. When your partner dies, you have to make sure that when he respawns, you are in an area where he will still spawn ontop of blue, to ensure that he will not get spawn killed when he comes back. This adds alot of strategy to the game because this isn't really anything you need skill to do, its just about knowledge of the game.

Another good thing about the player spawn system was that when you had the other team pinned at a bad spawn you would have to work with your team to make sure that you always leave on guy alive so that they keep spawning there. I'm sure that some people who are against spawn camping feel that this is a cheap way to play, but on every map there are certain areas where if you stand there, your partner will spawn in another location across the map. This can be used to your advantage by going to one of those spots and having your partner spawn somewhere unknown to the other team.

2. Implement a better spawn system for weapons.
-In Halo 1 the spawn time for weapons were independent from when they were picked up. In Halo 2 the spawns were dependent on when they were picked up. The system in Halo 2 makes it very easy for one team to maintain control of powerups, greatly unbalancing the game. I say they either bring back the Halo 1 method of spawns, or make it completly random.

3. Bring back grenading weapons.
-I really can't see any reason not to have this in the game, it just adds more strategy to the game and I honestly can't see how this can be bad.

4. Have a server list for custom games.
-This one really seems like a no brainer, I'd hope that everyone agrees with this one.

Coz they're pillocks and can't kill with anything else. They need an overpowered underskilled weapon do do any damage whatsoever. I could take out snipers with the old pistols even when they had a bead on me. It's a stupid weapon and shouldn't be brought back. And Bungie know it. They left it out of 2 for a good reason.

But who didn't play AR+Pistol start? The pistol took extreme amounts of skill if you played anyone that knew the basics of strafing.

Yeah, it kinda is. If were to bash someone's head in with a gun, they would die.

  • 05.10.2006 2:03 PM PDT

I like my Covenant like i like my woman, screamin and with a sticky on there face.

the difference was that it didnt matter if it was unbalanced bc everyone started with one and had an equal advantage in halo 2 you start with an smg...great for use against a sniper 300ft away right? the battle rifle at least gives a fighting chance and the pistol gave a bigger chance just kinda too big for it being a pistol. i am interested in what that assault rifle is going too do though should be interesting

Exactly, showing that players chose to start with the pistol in halo. The default settings were different.

the old pistol is unbalanced and unrealistic

why don't they make a super pea shooter that explodes everything...

then the "hardcore" fans who love the pistol would be happy.

Old school Bungie, born and raised,
In the Septagon is where I spend most of my days.
Relaxin', maxin', posting all cool,
Talking about Halo, life and some school.
Got in one little argument, and the mods got scared,
they said "You're gonna get banned and your member title'll be bare!"

I say that topics like these are redundant, since half the people are against it and deep down everyone knows that the pistold ISN'T coming back. If they wanted it to, they would have put it in halo 2

Bringing the H1 pistol back would only shame the glorious return of the assault rifle. Eff those pistol sniping whores. These people complain about "balance" because their pre-pubescent minds can't grasp the concept of using different weapons for different situations. If they had their way we would be spawning on flat open fields back-to-back and doing the old "ten paces and draw" schtick. That would involve, as they say, "pure skill" but not fun. In my opinion, they should be playing Space Invaders, not Halo.

To put it very simpily, the pistol was the equalizer in Halo. Say you were running around and you saw somone with a rocket launcher (now in Halo 2 you would already be dead), with the pistol it was possible for a player to actually be able to fight back against this rocket launcher if the player with the pistol had a certain amount of skill. Another point I will bring up is that everyone had it so you could'nt really complain while some one else killed you with it and like I said before it as possible to fight your way out of a lot of very difficult situations. That is why I would like to see it return.

Great points all. Although spawning on top of a nade in H1 sucks, but it's part of the game. And, uber weapons do need to respawn IMHO. But, to keep people from using timers (as they do on XBC) make it a rather random time. One time it takes 1:47 to repspawn, the next 2:23, and so on. It only takes a few bad apples to spoil the bunch. I understand why Bungie made this change, but I think it made things worse instead of better.

Server list is a MUST. I'm tired of playing Bungies odd version of what fun is. I like team slayer games. I played team hardcore this morning. Played 12 games, all 12 were objective games. I was VERY frustrated. I've all but stopped playing because of the playlists and being forced to play what I don't want. This morning was the first time I've played in months. Well, Halo 2 that is:o) You know, if this alone were changed, almost all complaints would end. I wouldn't feel such a huge need for the old pistol if I could just play what I wanted. I don't like the absence of the pistol now because of what they force us to play. The BR can be a very good weapon, but not on a lot of the maps they choose. Some maps I don't even care if it's a BR start. On small maps I enjoy SMG starts. The only problem with this is they'll still spawn BR's, so if you don't grab one, you're outgunned. So, even those have turned into BR fests.

  • 05.10.2006 2:14 PM PDT

Players at all levels used different weapons for different situations more then you realise. The sniper rifle, plasma rifle, shotgun, rocket launcher, and assult rifle were used by everyone.

I hope you can rember the awsome plasma rifle "freezing effect", assult rifle finishing burst ( or the double melee), and finally the perfect shotgun. The rockets, snipes were always used for obvious reasons.

The only weapons ever neglected were the needler's and plasma pistol.
