Cortana says "This is the way the world ends", yet we all know that's not going to happen. Seriously, the game ends with everyone just dieing? Not going to happen. Cortana has seen the future, possibly with her supposed rampancy and/or Gravemind "just friends" relationship. Gravy has perhaps shown Cortana the future, he can teleport people around Delta Halo at least. So Chief needs to change the future... but will Cortana help him? If she has gone rampant, she won't, but her friendship with Chief may be what breaks through.

Coming down to it, Cortana needs to decide whether to help Chief change the course of time, or let destiny be fulfilled and everyone go up in a puff of smoke. That, I feel, will be the main factor in Halo 3; Cortana's choice between good (saving the world) and evil (hanging out with sixfeetundermind).

No, but the trilogy won't end with everyone dropping dead. How exciting would that be?

Cortona is rampant and searching for power to become a God. Gravemind just happens to be there at the right time to influence her...and nobody can see the future. And when she says "this is the way the world ends" she is either refering to:

* The first Cortona Letter

* The poem by T.S. Elliot that ends with This is the way the world ends
Not with a bang, but a whimper

And time travel isn't overboard. Truth still has a fragment of the Time Crystal found on Reach.
