What is the best book you think?, not the best book to read but just the best book YOU liked ^^
They're all quite different because there are many authors. Nylund's books are good at setting the scene and feature a lot of action if that's your thing (not mine), but with characters and dialogue he can be a little bland. You want to start with them though because they establish a lot of the universe.
Contact Harvest bored me, but again is pretty essential reading because it gives you the foundations of the human-Covenant war. I never read The Cole Protocol because the concept sounded incredibly dull and I've got better things to spend money on (plus I couldn't find a PDF online, if someone does/has drop me a PM.) Evolutions is great, with some stories obviously being better than others. Nylund surprised me in it with his short, which was incredibly entertaining and really captured the character of Admiral Cole.
Cryptum is what most people here will tell you is the best book, but I disagree. The first few hundred pages are insufferably slow, and although I can appreciate the creating of a universe, I disliked how it was conveyed in Cryptum; Bear tells us the backstory rather than showing us, and it sometimes feels like you're reading an encyclopedia.
Glasslands gets a lot of hate here, but again I must disagree; it could have benefited from a couple of point-of-views from the other end of the spectrum, but I found the plot highly engaging and it easily has the best-written characters out of all the Halo books aside from a few discrepancies with Doctor Halsey and Chief Mendez. A lot of people miss the point of the book, but it certainly hooked me back into the Haloverse.
Maybe I'm missing a book, I don't know; think I've covered all bases. There are a few comics and graphic novels but let's be honest here, they're terrible mediums. Kidding, if you like them that's fine but I personally can't stand the things.
I'd just read them in published order though. I did, actually. None of them are especially brilliant as far as books go, and they're all very different in tone and content; Nylund's got a very militaristic writing style, Greg Bear writes some hard-science fiction, Joe Staten hypothesises about the possibility of phones... ringing(?) and Traviss has more of a grip on character, dialogue and emotion.
