Subject: Alternate trailer words, alternate meanings

I have watched the trailer many times, and am still having trouble distinguishing between two words.

1. "I have defied gods and demons"

Now, listening to it, it sounds to me as if it could be either "defied", or more interestingly, "defined". If it is defied, it simply means to me that cortana is trying to get a message to the chief, even though she is trying to be stopped by gravemind and the gods. If however, it is "defined", it is more cryptic. I would take it to mean that gravemind is something older than the gods or demons, the creator. He is speaking through Cortana because that is someone the chief associates with.

2. "I am your shield, I am your sword."

Listening to this, and I know others have noticed it as well, it sounds like "source" instead of "sword" to me. If it is sword, the meaning is pretty simple. But if it is "source", which you can definitely hear an "s" sound in the word when listening to it, it could mean something very different. Although I can't quite figure it out, I would guess it to mean Cortana is saying she is the heart of the Chief's power. She is always the one getting him radio transmissions, and where to go to find covenant. Without her, he is on his own.

Looking at these two phrases, to me it seems to tell us whether Cortana is now good or evil. If it is as we all previously thought ("defied and sword"), then it points more towards Cortana still being on the Chief's side. However, there is alot to contradict this in the trailer.

As shown in other threads, in Cortana's first appearance you can see something very clear, some say it looks like a Prophet. It also shows Gravemind's voice, which reveals he is aware of this message that Cortana is saying, and he would most likely be wanting to prevent the Chief from getting a message from Cortana unless it is one he wants delivered.

Secondly, during the "I am your shield" scene, it shows Cortana with a not so pleasant look on her face. You can see her eyes rolling back into her head. You can also tell by the sound of her voice. Until her last line about knowing his past and future, she never looks the Chief right in his eyes, and her voice sounds deeper, more sinister.

If the two phrases are "source" and "defined", it makes her sound like she is threatening the Chief. By saying defined she is trying to show how greater she is than the chief, and by saying source she is saying he is nothing without her.

It's been thirty minutes and this thing still hasn't been posted...what's goin on.

Thanks for the meaningful, thought provoking response.

RIP Halo 2.

THe thing I agree with is that it is "source" not "sword". I've filtered the audio and and changed pitch playback speed - the works. It's source. For sure.

Some of the Cortana(s) say Sword, while Gravemind and the other Cortana(s) say Source.

Well a little bit of time on your hands? Just joking, but I still think that they are both in there...Sword and Source....or we could all be lead on another Bungie goose chase..which is interesting, no?

Yes, but if she was talking about the Chief she wouldn't be calling him a demon, or be talking about defying him unless Cortana has been turned.

Demons to me more specifically refers to the Flood, though if she has turned then yes I believe she would be speaking of the Chief.

well, my theory is, that gravemind has control of cortana, because didnt the prophet of truth in halo 2 say something about the gods or himself a god, OR he considered the Arbiter the deliverer of the covies (apart from the prophets jackals and brutes) and he considered Arbiter a "god" of somesort and they did call MC demon, and remember in Halo 2 he had both of them at one point face to face and was telling them what to do, and about the source thing, i is sorce by all means, but thats just my theory all in all

  • 05.10.2006 1:26 PM PDT

DWells, have you tried filtering out the defied/defined part? I'm curious to see what you find.

  • 05.10.2006 1:26 PM PDT

It's sword not source. The second "s" sound is just the echo of Cortana saying sword

i also heard source, but alos remember, in the bungie update when they reveal this stuff, they also say it gives you a good idea of cortanas mental state, meaning she might be a little crazy, or a lot crazy

how the -blam!- did u get Halseys voice? im pretty damn sure shes never mentioned in the games, and sure as hell isnt in them

RIP Halo 2.

Yeah, I'm bored - but the filtering process took 15 minutes....

The defined/defied... could go either way... but after going through the whole audio filtering process, I'm pretty sure I'm hearing an "n" noise. So, I'll lean towards defined. Also could be "I have to find" instead of "I have defined".

  • 05.10.2006 1:32 PM PDT

Hehe yea, Haley's voice has never been heard. She has only been mentioned in the books. He might be confused with Keye's daughter.

Well perhaps she's saying sword and source. If she really is combined with gravemind and/or there are multiple copies of cortana then she would be able to say and mean lots of things.

Just like the lead up to Halo2 its all speculation again... I mean what if she really is saying is "swords" as plural. Just could imply that Durandal has returned. We just dont know!!

All of your posts are very thought provoking. The most interesting thing to me is to figure out if bungie has really just made it jokingly simple, or i they inteded this deeper "double-meaning" stuff to keep us occupied and on the edge of our seats for more.

I respect your opinion, I'm probably just going to disagree with it.

I used a sound editing program to cut out the echos and it is definately Sword, but I can't do much with 'defied' or 'defined'. I think it's defied, but thats just me! Maybe im a boring old sod deep at heart....
I'm worried now.
