I have watched the trailer many times, and am still having trouble distinguishing between two words.
1. "I have defied gods and demons"
Now, listening to it, it sounds to me as if it could be either "defied", or more interestingly, "defined". If it is defied, it simply means to me that cortana is trying to get a message to the chief, even though she is trying to be stopped by gravemind and the gods. If however, it is "defined", it is more cryptic. I would take it to mean that gravemind is something older than the gods or demons, the creator. He is speaking through Cortana because that is someone the chief associates with.
2. "I am your shield, I am your sword."
Listening to this, and I know others have noticed it as well, it sounds like "source" instead of "sword" to me. If it is sword, the meaning is pretty simple. But if it is "source", which you can definitely hear an "s" sound in the word when listening to it, it could mean something very different. Although I can't quite figure it out, I would guess it to mean Cortana is saying she is the heart of the Chief's power. She is always the one getting him radio transmissions, and where to go to find covenant. Without her, he is on his own.
Looking at these two phrases, to me it seems to tell us whether Cortana is now good or evil. If it is as we all previously thought ("defied and sword"), then it points more towards Cortana still being on the Chief's side. However, there is alot to contradict this in the trailer.
As shown in other threads, in Cortana's first appearance you can see something very clear, some say it looks like a Prophet. It also shows Gravemind's voice, which reveals he is aware of this message that Cortana is saying, and he would most likely be wanting to prevent the Chief from getting a message from Cortana unless it is one he wants delivered.
Secondly, during the "I am your shield" scene, it shows Cortana with a not so pleasant look on her face. You can see her eyes rolling back into her head. You can also tell by the sound of her voice. Until her last line about knowing his past and future, she never looks the Chief right in his eyes, and her voice sounds deeper, more sinister.
If the two phrases are "source" and "defined", it makes her sound like she is threatening the Chief. By saying defined she is trying to show how greater she is than the chief, and by saying source she is saying he is nothing without her.
