The Risk Is Worth The Reward.
Cry Havoc And Let Slip The Dogs Of War.

Of course Bungie wants to make money off of the games they make. To say they don't care about the fans is just stupid. Take a look around OP it's very easy to see how much they care about the fans.

NO

-blam!- Was that actually blammed out? Or did I just type it? You'll never know.

Yeah, of course it's about money. They're a business.

I was naive to think otherwise for several years. It's all about money. It's always been about money. They don't care about how games turn out, or addressing negative gameplay mechanics, exploits, ect, as long as they make their sales quota.

It's not that they don't care, it's that they have millions of people using their products, they can't listen to those people individually. It's also that they can't rush into making changes, that's how things get broken.

Ah, so OP is one of those Halo "fans" that actually hates the majority of the series.

Stick in the Reach forum where people like you belong. You want all the faults?

When the game is over, the king and pawn go into the same box

I can honestly say I have no idea how some one can say that "Bungie doesn't care". Sure, they are a business, and want to make money, but the old adage rings true: "Take care of your customers, or some one else will."

I think this is even more true in the gaming industry. There's new product every week. Couple that will the ADD/OCD nature of some gamers, and it becomes very difficult to hold the spotlight for very long. Companies have to compete at all levels. Not just at the game & content level itself, but also customer service & support. Bungie did a great job at developing a devoted fan base. That just didn't happen on accident or because they don't care. It's preposterous to think otherwise.

awesome, I read the entire email exchange. That is ridiculous that he would treat a customer that way. He is getting what he deserves, if his wife and child are truly feeling the brunt force of the internet then I feel sorry for them. However, there is nothing he can do now, the internet shows no mercy.
if his family exists(which considering the previous exchange could be in question) I feel terrible for them.

However, I feel no sympathy for him. He deserves what is coming down on him, but his family doesn't.

I honestly feel for the customer in that case.

Though I do feel the need to disclose that more than a few members who have been banned in the past have adopted a "I am the customer and the customer is always right" strategy when attempting to appeal their forum bans.

I can tell you that after multiple attempts to explain to the irate "customer" (actually community member) that:

1) Bungie.Net is a community site/service provided to the fan community.

2) The service is provided without any fee(s).

3) The service is conditional on any visitor honoring and following their membership agreement.

4) The site is Bungie dot NET, not dot COM, which should explain that while it is Bungie's offering to their fans, it is not a business and/or product support site.

5) That I do not work for, act, speak or serve as a representative of Bungie, but as a member of the same community and member pool that they are/were a part of.

6) So, they are not "a customer" but rather "a member". I am not "customer service" but rather "a fellow member". So, we are both members of a community, a community that allows some members to enforce the rules and regulations that all members agreed to follow when they joined. That none of us "bought anything" to become a member and since we didn't purchase anything, we're not customers of Bungie.Net. None of us. We're here of our own choosing and can remain here as long as we follow our promise to obey the conditions to which we all agreed.

7) So, any expectation of "customer service" is going to be met with this volunteers best effort at politeness, common courtesy, and civility. Unless those efforts of mine are not returned. Then, since I have no obligation to provide the individual with "customer service", and because in fact both the angry member and I are "customers" as they are mistakenly choosing to define it... and they are basically "being rude to another guy in the crowd". Eventually, this "fellow customer" is going to share his thoughts on the ability of the banned member to "properly assess their situation and direct their complaints appropriately". And when I get to that point, I am probably not too polite about it.

The problem is, once I start giving them back what they've been shoveling from the start... somehow I "am the douche".

Oh well, at least I smell like a spring breeze. With an interesting sort of tang.

So, why the long story from Uncle Recon? Just this (and I guess that you can call this the TL:DR summary). Customers DO deserve to be treated properly. They have paid for the privilege. But if you are being bumped around by life, the Internet, or on account of your own sense of entitlement... calling yourself a "customer" when you aren't one, isn't going to make you "always right". It's constantly tried and all it does it make it harder for real customers to get treated as they should. Fairly, decently and with some gratitude for their business.
So how should we act? I got suspended numerous times..

I think that I may not have been clear (all of that typing and not clear? How do I do it?).

I am not talking about how members "act". That's up to them. If someone wants to be a jerk, a raging bowl of righteous indignation, or a calm and rational person... that is up to them, their self-control, their personality. I've seen it all.

I was specifically speaking about folks who CHOOSE to try the "I am the customer and the customer is always right" strategy as a shield/excuse/reason for either the reason they got banned or for the reason that I should unban them. It's not a valid or applicable point when it comes to bans.

I would say I am one of the most successful trolls in Bungie.net history.

I can somewhat agree with the OP, only because of Reach though. They never even bothered to give it a TU and they ignored the competitive crowd about Arena (yet they changed it after it was too late). It was also kind of sad to watch them cater their game to the drooling masses but I guess the days of making games for gamers are over.

I don't see the difference here.

I work at a movie theater. By buying a ticket, you're also agreeing to a number of conditions, just like joining a website. "We're here of our own choosing and can remain here as long as we follow our promise to obey the conditions to which we all agreed" is the same whether you paid for something or not. I can kick people out of the theater for being disruptive, just like you can ban people for being disruptive.

Now...

The problem is, once I start giving them back what they've been shoveling from the start... somehow I "am the douche".

Well... yeah. If I'm rude to customers (even after they're rude to me), I get in trouble. Flaming back at someone after they flame you gets you banned. "Harassment of any kind will not be tolerated, even if they probably deserve it."

  • 12.28.2011 9:34 AM PDT

whoever is sending those strangely familiar messages... you know... "i was searching the site when i found your profile..." THOSE. Cut it out.

...WTF? What are you talking about? I'm very confused, its like... they (being a large business) are supposed to care about every single soul that uses their product, but then you forgot to factor that they try as much as possible to actually do that. ???? You make no sense.

It's a subtle one.

Have you ever seen members who attempt to "claim standing" by saying "I have bought every one of the Bungie games, Legendary Editions all..." as if that statement indicates "you mere mortals should cower at my feet and pay closer attention to what I say"?

They are attempting to link their purchase and expenditure (on Bungie games) to their posting and treatment (on Bungie.Net). They aren't the same. A member who has never even heard of Bungie but a friend showed them The Flood and they like posting there is (forum-wise) on the exact same footing as any other member. Solid ground if they are following the rules, thin ice if they are not.

I am speaking of a very specific and narrow set of circumstances here. Besides being members of this community, most of us are (to one extent or another) also customers of Bungie.

But the OP was talking about fans. And I see a difference between fans and customers. Sure the lines are narrow, overlap, and are subjectively defined... especially when the fan and/or customer feels they are being treated unfairly or not listened to.

But I do believe that fans and customers are two different hats that we can wear. When it comes to Bungie, I prefer being a fan. It's a more comfortable seat, and I feel that I get more contact, interaction, enjoyment from being a fan than I would if I were a customer.

But, on the OP's point. I believe that his view is that Bungie says fans, but sees customers. I respectfully disagree. I've been in and observed a lot of businesses that only have customers, and some of them treat their customers properly and/or well. But any company that acknowledges they have fans... that company then has two roles. Dealing with customers and dealing with fans. Confusing the two is risky for both the company and the audience.

I'm rambling, my apologies.

Hmm can't tell if just stupid, or just blindly stupid.
