Subject: Latency Issues: 343/Bungie still not fixed?

If you are not aware, people outside of America/Canada are receiving connection issues. Since the majority of players are in America/Canada this means a lot of connection issues for people out side of these countries. Particularly bad for people in Europe, Australia and surrounding areas. This is due to high ping latency.

Before I go into detail about a idea for a fix for latency, let me explain in detail what latency actually is for those who do not know. Latency is the time it takes for information to go from your x box to the host x box. A host x box is selected by the server and host is given to one of the players in your matches.
when you shoot someone, that piece of information travels to the host x box and the host x box registers the shot, beat down, granade etc . IT IS NOT LAG. With Lag it is the missing information packet and you will see the player glitch on screen. This is because data has not been received at the right time by your x box.

With latency it is more difficult to resolve. Think of it like this. Imagine a truck, this is your internet connection and it carries your information from point A to B. (A) Meaning your country x box and (B) the host country x box. Having a 1MB connection or 100 MB connection speed doesn't change the SPEED your information sends to the host x box, it only changes the AMOUNT of information the lorry can carry at one particular time. The speed of the lorry is STILL THE SAME. This is why you may receive 'Warning' on upstream bandwidth even though you have a good connection. Why does it do it? In my theory, (if you're outside of US and Canada) Your information is taking longer to reach the host US and Canadian x box. So it thinks your internet connection is slow, even though it is fine and does not effect play.

One way to tell if you're having latency issues is to throw a granade. Does it come out your hand slower? The slower it is, the more latency you're getting. Latency will effect you in many ways in Halo. If you go for a beat down and even though you swear you should of killed the guy, the other player kills you with a beat down right afterwards. This is a practical example. Your information is taking slower to reach the host x box, his beat down registers before yours and he takes the victory. In some cases, it also effects headshot registering and lunges with the sword.

If you're new to Halo or inexperienced, Latency isn't really a issue since the skill gap between each player is larger. However, when you're in intense MLG games, latency will play a bigger part since the skill gap between each player is smaller and the little things will count towards a victory. Latency effects you more and more with the better players you play against.

Bungie has tried to rectify this issue in Halo 3. They did it so if both of you went for a beat down, the computer registers you both dead so there is no victor. This was a interesting idea however, IT IS ONLY PUTTING A CRUMPLED BAND AID ON THE ISSUE.

What needs to be done is EUROPE, CANADA/AMERICA and AUSTRALIA need to be seperated. So European players play with Europeans, Canadians/US players play with only US/CANADIAN players. This can easily be done by having each player select their continent They are then grouped seperatey into different pools of matchmaking (just like when you select find players by skill level and the result would be = No more latency issues!

Problems: This would mean smaller matchmaking however, The majority of players are in Canada and America so they would not be effected. the games would be latency free for europeans and Australians and surrounding host countries and a complete fix. My question to you 343/Bungie is why hasn't it been done yet? Seleting 'Good connection or 'Language' still is putting me on Canadian/American host where I am receiving a lot of latency.

Either, get dedicated servers or go for the NO COST FIX of separating people by countries. This would leave your European customers more satisfied as they get to play the game fairly. So many of my friends have quit Halo because of this issue. There has been COUNTLESS petitions by gamers for this simple fix! Bungie/343 has been focused on other things but have completely forgotton their european/australian customer base. This issue is large and the fix is simple!

Bungie/343 how long do you think you can continue to ignore this issue? I personally LOVE your games. But, you're losing a lot of customers since gamers are switching to other games where they have done this.

I would like to hear the thoughts on this by other people and fellow europeans and also for Bungie/343 to take note.

Plus, 343i or Bungie can do sweet bugger-all about it.

To be honest, when I first saw all this in the weekly update I thought 2 things.
#1- there is an actual legendary ending but,
#2- No matter what anyone does,(kill all the bobs, hit all switches etc) that until the "time" mentioned in "There'll be another time..." is reached there won't be a legendary ending.

The weekly update by bungie has slowed my hardcore search for what unlocks the legendary ending.

Wtf u talking about, I have people in Europe that have no issues in matchmaking. Only times there is lag is if its firefight/campaign. Only reason there is that lag is because of all those AI's and us being a whole ocean apart, which causes it to have a slight delay of data. Canada? Unless your having some heavy snow storms, you shouldn't have any problem since the server's were at Washington State (that is if 343 didn't move them to wherever they are).

Like this guy said

Bungie/343 can easily fix this. The fix is listed in the thread. Cost effective and simple.

Ignorant people will say its your connection but haven't bothered to research what latency actually is. If you do not believe me, do a search in Google under 'Latency issues with Halo in europe'. you will be ASTOUNDED by the results you encounter for this issue.

Like was said before, inexperienced players will not recognise how much latency is effecting them. I have been playing online since the days of HALO 2 and it has always been a issue.

server's

Halo isn't played on servers. It uses a peer-peer network.
Wtf are you talking about. Have you not been on Reach and everyone's rank was reset to recruit and you couldn't pull up your service records? That's because the servers were down. And if you read the bungie updates (or waypoint, forget which one it was) they said that they were handing over the bungie servers for halo over to 343. Sure you have peer to peer connections, but the whole reason halo is running is because they have servers. Its sorta like how Sony got hacked. Because they got hacked, NO ONE could play. Same goes for Microsoft, all their games run through them. Xbox could shut down anyone like they did for the original Xbox live.

Yes there is servers but the servers are for game stats only.

Halo is NOT played on servers. Only in idiot would think that.
Stats or not, they still have to run through the Xbox servers.

~ Videogames are my favorite videogames ~

Or instead of permanently separating people from each other, just have Local Only option if they prefer, or search Local first then expand.

  • 12.26.2011 2:28 PM PDT

Running through servers or not, the servers PICK the hosts. Just like when you select ''Match players with equal skill ability, why not a option for choosing a certain continent. Even though the servers are in America, Europeans play with europeans for no latency gaming.

Americans/Canadians are effected too when they're on European host but have not encountered it enough to notice. You probably thought you were being standbyed of some sort but it was just European host and it effected play.

Of course you would. The majority of players are in AMERICA and CANADA. If it were equal, i'd be recieving lower latency. But, when I get latency 15 times out of 20, I assume the majority of players are in America/Canada since the server designates host to whoever has the connection that most players will receive the best connection from. Separating by continent will fix this issue.

Inequality

I know exactly what ShogunRonin is talking about. I've had Xbox Live since the week it was released to the public. I've seen the Latency issues stranding from Halo 2 to Reach now. Granted, It's not as bad in Reach as it used to be. But I have many Foreign friends and they do have latency issues. One has a 60 Upload / 50 Download connection. And even when he beats me down its half a second behind for him. That's NOT lag, That's Latency. I agree you should be able to choose what country you would like to search for, Example. Battlefield 3's Server Selection. You can choose North America, South, England/UK, Australia, Ect. It's a smart move. Battlefield is even on EA Servers and they have this option to make gaming Smoother. Say you speak a different Language. You don't want to be in a game with all Americans confused as ever and not know what each other are saying. The Country/Location option would be amazing in a game like Halo. And everyone know's on Halo 3 the games you'd get into with 3 people on you're team speaking Spanish. I agree on a Country/Location option 100%.

I agree with this guy. Latency really only takes too much of an effect on FF and Campaign, however with European/Australian hosts it's every slightly noticeable. I do know, however, that any foreign host is trash when it comes to American players, because the response time can fluctuate. Any slight disturbance in response time completely breaks down the game and it just sucks. I agree that continents need separated, but it would be bad because then the latency would be WORSE when a an Australian host has to reconnect with someone else in Australia. That's a longer timeframe, thus worse.

Thus the world we live in.

Sadly this thread wont help at all when posted on B.net, US is know for having realy realy bad connection yet they allways get host due to realy bad network code. 40 mb up from Sweden yet US host with 2 mb up gets host even if 7 players are from EU we still have to play on that red bar US host. Support Dedicated for Halo 4 so we all can play on good connection. There are a few threads over at Halowaypoint about dedicated servers for Halo 4.

I find you're post to be extremely biased. The US is not "known" for having bad connection. (Where'd you come up with that one?) Those are Mexicans and Aussies. Most US players who are host have a green bar. I live in the US and when im host I have a green bar. Most hosts who have a red bar are either Mexicans or Aussies which makes your statement invalid.

The Mexican's has crap connection yes, but you would think a big country like US to have way better connection then they curently have, but they dont. Just google average connection world wide and you will see US at a realy bad place compared to most EU countries aka Sweden and Finland etc, South Korea has always been #1 and Japan/Honkong at 2nd, with US at a realy bad place based on connection in 2011. Now EU players playing on US host never get to play on green US connection, only on realy rear conditions it's green for us in EU on a US host.

I 100 % agree on all points! I am from Sweden. I´ll tell you what I found to be the most frustrating while playing Halo. It was trying to get a 50 in in SWAT in Halo: 3. Almost every game, almost every kill I got in it I had to shoot the opponent 3 - 5 times. And that does not work if you play on high levels.
