Subject: I think Carpet Bans should be given more often.

Studies show that men think about sex every 7 seconds. I do my best to eat hotdogs in under 6, just so things don't get weird.

Stole many a man's soul and faith

I do.

After being hit in one, I never comment on obvious troll threads. My behavior has been adjusted. Now, I think they should be consistently done, on every troll thread. It's pointless to just lock the thread and ban the OP. Carpet bans keep people from responding to Trolls.

No. Its a slap in the face to new members of the site who dont know how things work, and what to avoid.

I'll be on my own side.

As much as I would love a tool that just nails everyone in a thread at once, there wouldn't be a way to hand out bans/warnings as appropriate based on the individual.

The one I got caught in was, ahem: "I have a big [REDACTED]" the redacted part is the offensive word. There are plenty of times in the Flood where we have people who bypass the -blam!- filter. Why not use it on these folks? There are cases where just by replying and bumping the topic, everyone in it is guilty.

Thats like putting journalist in jail for reporting on a crime.

Not really. Unless of course the journalists were involved with the crime. By posting in a thread you keep the discussion alive. On certain threads there is no discussion. They exist to break the rules. Like those that bypass the language filter. So, those that post in them are just as guilty as the thread author.

So someone that says "Report and move on" totally deserves to be banned. Here's the problem, you're not seeing this from the eyes of a user who responds. They're not doing anything wrong, sometimes a "troll" thread can't be identified because it's so subtle. I don't think you really know what "trolling" is. Trolling is cleverly making people flame at each other by posting flame bait. (I.E. Religion, politics, Mac vs. PC) Or, they post something that makes everyone obviously upset.

You're probably thinking about John Cena, MarryMeJane, that kind of stuff. That isn't trolling, it's spam. Trolling and spam are two completely different things. I don't even like the rules against replying to spam. Don't ban someone who isn't doing anything.

I play for fun and armory completion. :)

I have to agree, I've been more wary of replying to threads that could be interpreted as spam since there were a few carpet bans. The inconsistency is annoying to say the least.

OP - You're a dumbass with the reading comprehension skills of a second grader.

Can someone tell me what's wrong with these two, this made me LOL hard.

Yeah, it's hard to tell if someone trolls you know... Dunno if you are. But Carpet bans hit more innocents than the guilty.

Best Song ever: You Cant Quit Me Baby by Queens of the Stone Age

Also Guns and Roses are the biggest load of pish-posh ever

If the thread calls for it, then it should be used.

Obviously its at the moderators discretion, but broadly spekaing any thread made in direct breach of the posted rules (eg Political, Religious, Pronorgrafix etc)should be subjected to a blanket ban in my opinion, seeing as replying to such threads only keeps it up on the front pages, which in essence is no better than making a brand new thread on the same subject.

That being said, I have it on good authority that 99% of all bungie.net mods drink heavily prior to defending the internet from rulebreakers.

That's semantics, and you know it. Whether its the Oxford definition of a troll or not, that's what passes for trolls today.

There are clear cases that aren't just trolling. And they turn into hot topics in minutes. Some threads exist just to break the rules. These are clear cases.

And "Report and Move On" isn't an excuse to bump them. By posting that, YOU are bumping the thread.

By carpet bombing threads, the most obvious trolls would go away, because no body would respond.

  • 12.26.2011 2:40 PM PDT

Part of immediately identifying spam is by one saying "report and move on" as one of the replies in a thread. It sends a message saying "Don't reply, and mods? Ban this fool."

If by doing so, he gets banned, then that's just (for lack of a better word) retarded.

  • 12.26.2011 2:43 PM PDT

But what you're not getting is that if this happened, there'd be a warning of some sort somewhere (probably a pinned topic), and he wouldn't need to say "report and move on". People would understand that if they reply, they'll be banned.

Report and move on should be obvious. By posting that you are doing nothing but keeping it on page one. Which is just where the troll wants it.

A carpet ban kills trolls the same way a Halo kills Flood. By killing their food. If we stop responding to them, they go away. Carpet bans should be dropped as often as necessary until the threads are cleaned up.

We were supposed to have read the rules and T's & C's. Remember, You have no rights?

So, this isn't an argument. Read the rules, they are stickied to the top of every page. Ignorance of them is no excuse.

Could they not just be given warnings? If I'm not mistaken, warnings are usually given out to first time offenders.

Heavy, 7 day bans should be given to those who make silly threads outside of The Flood. However, inside of The Flood there should be far less regulation & allow the people to make silly threads & allow the other people to make silly replies without fearing a ban.

  • 12.26.2011 3:18 PM PDT

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

yeah and I should be given mod powers

/sarcasm

They are fine for extreme emergencies but not normally for small instances of spam. it hurts too many innocent users who respond on topic.

  • 12.26.2011 3:20 PM PDT

You're trying too hard. -_-

OT: Yeah, the bans wouldn't be like, 2 months or anything. They'll only be like a week or so. New members could probably PM a Mod and get them reduced or even removed if they really didn't know what they were doing.
