As much as I would love a tool that just nails everyone in a thread at once, there wouldn't be a way to hand out bans/warnings as appropriate based on the individual.
The one I got caught in was, ahem: "I have a big [REDACTED]" the redacted part is the offensive word. There are plenty of times in the Flood where we have people who bypass the -blam!- filter. Why not use it on these folks? There are cases where just by replying and bumping the topic, everyone in it is guilty.

lolno

Thats like putting journalist in jail for reporting on a crime.
That is irrelevant considering replying to spam is against the rules.

“Strange,” mused the Director, as they turned away, “strange to think that even in Our Ford’s day most games were played without more apparatus than a ball or two and a few sticks and perhaps a bit of netting. imagine the folly of allowing people to play elaborate games which do nothing whatever to increase consumption.”

They are fine for extreme emergencies but not normally for small instances of spam. it hurts too many innocent users who respond on topic.
If they are responding on topic, and the topic is against forum rules, then they aren't innocent.

Why are you reading my signature? Who actually opens these things and reads them!

And as always, SEND ME A PM. Please. Or really bad things will happen to you.

But then I might be bannedz and I wouldn't like that.

@spaboolly

This has already been touched on, but I would have to agree that the OP is referring more to spam threads. In those cases (which are always obvious) a carpet ban may or may not be applicable. It all depends.

Personally I think they should be used more in threads that blatantly violate the forum rules. There was a thread in the Flood a week or so ago that was (supposed to be) about the Westboro Baptist Church, which easily qualifies as both religious and political discussion. Within three hours, it turned into 14 pages of religious flame war which kept going until one of the mods finally came online and locked it. Even new users, even if they had just skimmed the forum rules, would know not to post in that. But people did, and most of it was very offensive.

I would assume some bans were issued there, but I would think that would be a good place for a carpet ban. Every single post was a violation of the rules. The same can sometimes be said of spam threads, but not always. If someone posts a warning to others who might see the thread, I don't think they should be punished for it.

As for trolling, it is meant to be subtle, and can be easily confused. A serious post can be misconstrued as trolling (if it presents an unpopular opinion, for example). As long as it isn't offensive and actually encourages some form of decent discussion I don't think it should be considered for a carpet ban. Some of the best threads I've seen on here were non-serious threads. And hell, the biggest trolls on here are probably the employees and some of the mods. *Cough* Foman *cough*.

As I said in the beginning, this is intended for threads that violate the rules on their face. As you pointed out, someone bypassing the language filter, or breaking the political/religious rule should be banned anyways. By participating in these discussions, they should be banned. Eventually the people who post those threads will stop, because no one will play with them. Then they will go away.

This is why the mods should nuke more threads. Sure it will tick a ton of people off. You can't make an omelet with out breaking some eggs.

No. Its a slap in the face to new members of the site who dont know how things work, and what to avoid.

Well, technically it'd be the new members fault for not at least scanning the forum rules. That, and they'd probably have to have a pretty low threshold of common sense to reply to a thread with vulgar or racist language, and/or shock links.

Sorry for the bump. It was this or a new thread.

Who ever is responding to the current MarryMeJane style threads in the Flood right now is just as guilty as the OP. This is when Carpet Bans are put to good use.
