This is a bit of a long read but meh...

I’ve watched the trailer several times now and have been contemplating ideas revolving Cortana’s transmission. I’m sure everyone remembers the last bit of the ending cut-scene in Halo 2 when the Gravemind confronts Cortana and they’re ready to talk. The Gravemind seems to be an ancient being, most probably he/it was around ever since the existence of the Forerunners considering that the Halo stations were built to imprison the Flood. Now considering that there is obviously some significance to Earth regarding the Forerunners (The Arc, whatever that is, is obviously located on Earth), the Gravemind must have realized some sort of imminent danger regarding the Covenant’s blind march towards destruction. At the end of Halo 2 we were informed that the Arc is a sort of fail-safe last ditch effort thingy to activate the Halo stations. Now the Arc being on Earth is an interesting note because that can lead to several speculations. One of them being that mankind is some sort of descendant of the Forerunners. This wouldn’t be too unrealistic considering that when the Forerunners destroyed themselves, they might have also used the Arc rather than the Index (because if you remember correctly only the Proclaimers can use the Index… Now why is it that Proclaimers are Humans?). So if the Forerunners had to use the Arc, perhaps A) Some of them survived and eventually became humans. Or B) They planted a genetic seed on Earth that sparked the evolution of Man.

I would think it is something towards B because the Forerunners obviously knew the extend of the danger that the Flood and the Halo stations behold. The Flood only needs one little flood thingy to survive as a race, so the Forerunners knew that somebody would have to be able to activate these stations again when/if the Flood went out of hand again after millions of years. However, they were smart enough to design the Halo stations so that only a specific person(s) (The Proclaimers, a la Humans) could activate it so some stranger doesn’t accidentally bump into it and turn it on (The Covenant).

Now you might ask why Humans weren’t left behind some sort of instructions on how to activate these stations or the purpose of their use, however; that’s where 343 Guilty Spark and his friends come in.

Now going back to Cortana and the Gravemind. The Gravemind must know of the Arc and the Forerunner’s weapons against his race since he has been alive since their existence and is a sort of Godly being, there’s hundreds of ways that can explain his knowledge of the Arc. Now I’m assuming that throughout their discussion, Cortana figures this same stuff out and reveals to the Gravemind that the Arc is located on Earth. And thus the Gravemind realizes the importance of humanity as a sort of dietary role in the Covenant’s faith and their significance in the events taking place.

So that leads to a couple of interesting thoughts: Will the Covenant realize the Human link to the Forerunner and therefore consider Humans to be divine? Will MC go from being a Demon to a God?

There are still some other points to consider in this plot so I’ll leave that question in your heads and turn your attention to the events unfolding on Earth and throughout the Covenant.
Master Chief has returned to Earth to find that the Covenant has defeated the Human resistance and has uncovered some sort of Forerunner architecture (which is most likely the Arc). I can see where the Elite revolution is playing into the plot here – even though Chief is a one man army, he still needs friends to help him fight. So the Elite’s revolt against the Covenant is basically that – enemies who hate Chief’s enemies so they become Chief’s friends. With all of the confusion erupting within the Covenant, Chief can easily sneak his way throughout the veins and arteries of the Covenant’s forces on Earth and do some primal damage before they activate the Arc.

So speaking of the Elites, what’s up with their religious beliefs now? They’ve realized the sham revolving around their Profits’ teachings (or at least the Arbiter has but I’m sure he’s preaching these findings to his followers). So do they still consider the Chief as a demon? The Elite revolutionaries at least now realize that if the Covenant proceeds to activating the Halo network, the universe will be ridden of all life. So they will have to team up with Humanity to dissolve the Covenant’s presence, will this lead to a friendly standing between Humans and Elites after the war is over (assuming we win)? Will Elites and Humans then co-exist since the Elites wouldn’t have a home to go to now that they’ve revolted against the Covenant? Will they provide alien technology to the Human side and thus bring out some new hybrid toys?

Interesting stuff… to me anyway. Oh and just to touch on the words that Cortana says in the trailer… I think all of that relates to what I talked about here in my post.

“I have defined Gods and Demons” can refer to my ideas regarding Humanity’s link to the Forerunners and their significance in Covenant beliefs.

“I am your shield, I am your sword” can refer to Cortana’s knowledge of the truth and how that is the ultimate weapon in this battle that revolves around false faith.

“I know you, your past, your future” again talking about Humanity and its links to the Forerunner race. Also this alludes to what the Forerunners have set Humanity to do – perhaps Chief is the one to do whatever it is.

“This is the way the world ends” referring to the world as we know it. Perhaps Humans ARE the Forerunners? (Jumping a bit far by stating that but it would be interesting), and finally we’re ready to pick up where the Forerunners left off.

I guess we’ll find out in 2007.

A well done post. I applaud it. I like your ideas there, and till the release date in 2007, and maybe after, agree with them. They could be true.

One more bump to keep this on the first page. I know this is frowned upon but I'd really like to see a couple of responses before this thread falls into the abyss of forgotten posts - I'm wondering if I can spark some cool ideas, or if people think I'm being too far-fetched.
