The Gravemind believes that he is following the mantle better than the Forerunners.
*sees the word "Mantle"
*looks at OP*
*Tries not to re-post OP*
I'm assuming you are referring to the "Mantle is a Lie" thread? People believe lies. Some even say the more audacious the lie the more likely you are to believe it. I should have mentioned that in my theory the Gravemind is a few cards short of a full hand and isn't thinking very clearly.
I don't think it is a lie more so then the Forerunners creating it to justify their rule and an imitation of the precursors possibly creating everything.
You see how the Forerunners created the Engineers but they hold no status in society nor have any respect? I am betting it was the same when the precursors created them, hence rebellion once the forerunners became too smart. Something that might have just happened to the engineers.
I have a game called "Sins of a Solar Empire" And I found a similarity with one of the races to the forerunners.
"The Vasari Empire was once the strongest in the galaxy. Their empire was formed by peacefully assimilating primitive races and brutally crushing more advanced races, turning the populations of both into second class citizens.
However, at some point they started losing contact with their worlds. At first, it was believed to be acts of rebellion, or the work of traitors, but as more worlds were lost, it became clear the situation was very serious. Vast fleets were sent to deal with the problem, but none of them ever returned, and the Vasari still had no clue as to the identity of the attacker. Finally, the Vasari recalled all of the available ships of their conquering fleet, the Dark Armada, and sent them all to the last planet they lost contact with.
Only one frigate returned, literally falling apart, with its crew driven completely insane with fear. It was then that the Vasari Empire as a whole began to flee. They began their exodus, leaving their home systems behind, stopping only to harvest resources, rebuild their population ...."
The Only difference between the Vasari and forerunners is appearance. The forerunners did exactly what i Have put in bold; The Didact himself states that Riser's people were to be made into servants and teachers. I will take the connection further by stating the forerunners chased down the precursors after coming to terms with there situation and hunted them down, though i say a few left the galaxy.
Which Is why i am calling the Mantle Bollocks due to the hypocrisy and random nature of the ideal.

Well, whatever the TO said was horrible enough to cause humans to commit suicide, knowing the Flood was sent by the very people you are trying to venerate would be horrifying. Hmm, but that would mean that the Mantle is unobtainable because no one would want to follow the Creator's plan.
Now where have I heard such a thing before...This theory makes sense. Galaxies all around us are probably infected. Look at the ships the Flood arrived in. Low maintenance simple ships. Perfect for Million Year journeys.
I bet the Creators sent these ships out all over the Universe and then infected their own Galaxy. There's a flaw with this plan though because once The Flood infect everything they will all die out.
One of the many issues with that, is the assumption that the precursors are the most advance life in the universe and in said universe nothing could possibly be naturally immune to the flood.
And i think the Gravemind might be a species seeing how The "proto-graveminds" have all been completely different. Adding on to the fact our mind was nothing like the one the forerunners fought.
