Except the hero dying is a ridiculously cliche and lazy way to conclude a character's arc.

So a cliffhanger ending is a better way? Or just quitting the military as there's no need for him? Id say he could end up as some sort of trainer, except there's no reason to train anyone in his set of skills any more...

And another person has ruined that saying.

I acknowledge my user name is stupid. However, I promise I'm not.

Disclaimer: The latter is a lie.

I would like to see John killed at the end of the Reclaimer Trilogy. However, that does not mean I would like to see an end to the Halo franchise at this time.

Halo: ODST 2, anybody?

I'm sure you've said this before, kindly name me 5 recent examples of this.

Neo - The Matrix, Captain John H. Miller - Saving Private Ryan, Darth Vader - Star Wars, Everyone - The Departed, Leonidas - 300, The same main character dies 100 times - The Prestige

With the exception of Neo all those examples are from one off projects, not really the sort of thing we are discussing.

So, I'll give you Neo, even though we don't know if he's actually dead.

Now try and give me 4 Video Game Protagonists who've been killed off at the end of their series.

Don't -blam!- with Kerser!

Or even worse. Let him live, but something he does paralizes him forever.

Or have him go MIA after he has 100% certainly killed off the Universes threat.

What I want to happen is he goes MIA after some kind of massive explosion or somehting and all that is found of him is his helmet. This would leave an open ending so the fans who want him to live can think that and the ones who don't can think he died.

Show Faith/Defy Fate

To be perfectly honest, a clean and cut life or death for MC would be boring. I mean, we know either one or the other is coming. We knew it from the beginning. So, why not do something CREATIVE with it? A big part of Halo has always been the mystery surrounding things. For me, death with the slightest chance of life is probably the way to go. Let the player witness his "death," but make it where under the perfect circumstances, he just might do what he does best and "get lucky." However, if they go with this route, that has to be the absolute end to that character. He cannot reappear ever again otherwise you just ruin the entire plot device.

John's last words:

"Like Kurt said...we will never die."

I agree with this, and it shouldn't be like Noble Six's death, going out with a bang, as that is too cliche, if you want creativity, it should be more emotional, a more 'personal' ending, to make the player feel as though this is their last moments, and that they aren't coming back.

Yes. They really need to capture those last few moments in a super personal way. That would definitely do it justice in my eyes.

Well I dont think that will happen. Just like Wolverfrog said, its lazy to end a story like that, he could just go back into cryogenic sleep again or just head back to Earth, we'll have to just wait and see...

Spartans Never Die bro

And another person has ruined that saying.

It appears so. I'm willing to bet that 90% of the people who use that quote don't have an understanding of why they "don't die".

OT: Chief should diue in a sacrifice along with a select few who are the close companions in the trilogy. Something along the lines of how the Admiral and the ODST crashed the flagship into the Unyielding Hierophant to lure all the ships closer to be in the detonation field.

  • 12.28.2011 3:38 AM PDT

This world wants to drag you down... And the weight, that guilt they want to hang around your neck, you don’t have to carry it one more step. You think they won’t let you rest, but it’s not up to them. It never was.

I think he should either die or be MIA. Permanently MIA that is, with no post credit/legendary ending appearance. That way John's story concludes with a sense of mystery befitting a legendary hero.

MC dying =/= ultimate end to the halo franchise, not if there is enough fan demand and 343i are willing to satisfy it.

I did not say that. -_-

I said it would be the end to JOHN'S STORY, and John's story =/= the Halo franchise.

343i are still free to make side games and other story arcs.
After all, its halos gameplay that people will ultimately want to return to, even if the story protagonists are completely different and the plotlines are random, unconnected, even repetitive. Mario, COD and Fifa enjoy this kind of success every year, amongst others.

Frankly, I want a follow-up to ODST and a continuation of Halo Wars. An RPG would be nice too from the point of view of the Covenant.
