343. Halo 4 is the first game of the Reclaimer TRILOGY... WHere have you been the past 6 months?

Vengeance only leads to an ongoing cycle of hatred.

Even if it was cliche, what good will come from keeping him alive? If they let him die, Master Chief will be at peace and the fans will be at peace knowing he died in the great fight and will still live on as the legend he is. (Well, except for the Noble Team fanboys. They'll just shrug it off and keep thinking Chief is just an average soldier and shouldn't receive any credit for saving humanity. Yeah, now that I think of it, saving humanity really isn't that big a deal. Even if it was, why should it matter? He got a little bit of help from others which automatically discredits all that he's done. /sarcasm)

IT'S TIME FOR A DICKING

Master Chief should turn into the new gravemind, just for a laugh.

And he shall use his new powers to destroy the "ancient evil that threatens the fate of the entire universe".

It would make for a great plot twist.

Glory and fame, blood is our name!
Souls full of thunder, hearts of steel!
Killers of men, a warrior's friend!
Sworn to avenge our fallen brothers!
Sons of the gods, today we shall die.
Open Valhalla's door!
Let the battle begin, with swords in the wind! Hail Gods of War!

I don't think John will want to save the galaxy any more after 6. The man's probably tired, more so by the end of Reclaimer, I'd wager. I'm not sure if he should go out in a blaze of glory, but at least let him retire. Other Spartans have adjusted to Civilian life, IIRC. And I bet he has a nice paycheck headed his way, too.

No they haven't. Only Maria has and it's only vaguely mentioned, plus it's pretty ridiculous.

Spartans are not meant to retire, they're made to fight and die.

No source. The only spartan ever mentioned to be a civvie was maria, and her circumstances were never elaborated on.

Knowing 343, they'll end it like Star Wars, where the galaxy was saved and the main characters lived and lived on with their lives, knowing it was done. But wait, comics and books came out after telling you what happened, which I think is trash. Star Wars should've ended with Episode VI and be done, nothing more.
But that might be how Halo will finally end, and then the onslaught of comics and books after.

Knowing 343

But we don't know 343... they've not even made a game yet.

Whilst I agree that SW should have ended with Episode VI, I would have no problem with Halo being developed through novels.

I don't mind other novels, I just hope Chief isn't in them. I want Chief's story to end in 6.

John had to die at some point. All I want is that he dies fighting, whatever the threat may be and whenever.

Perhaps not in Halo 6, but he does have to die at some point.

The Master Chief will cease to be an interesting character if he's old an retired. Think about it.

It's the prestige that makes the illusion.

It's ridiculously cliche if the hero dies at the end.
Why should anyone kill MC?
Remember how the whole world acted when Rowling wanted to kill Harry Potter?!

...though hero's never die, they are only missed in action...

We should know better, because we are better.

Idea: make his death vague enough that you can't definitely say he survived but you can't definitely say he died. Like the non-legendary ending of Halo.

Nice idea, i chose yours,
it's like his face.
You don't know how he looks but you have a slight idea how he does look.

Agreed. I want him to go actually MIA on the 6th installment. I can't see Chief dying anyway.

Sigh... You can't have actually read the OP at all otherwise you wouldn't have posted something as stupid and ridiculous as that. Also, for the umpteenth time, THE VAST MAJORITY OF CONTEMPORARY AND CLASSICAL MEDIA ENDS WITH THE PROTAGONIST SURVIVING AND HAVING A HAPPILY EVER AFTER as a result how can the death of the protagonist be cliche.

And enough with the sodding "missing in action" bullshyte, IT IS NOT LITERAL.

The Joyeuse IP Formula

Honestly, he should have died at the end of Halo 3 so we could have avoided this 343i and Halo 4 shenanigans.

*puts on flame suit*

It's a common western writing technique, actually: coming full-circle.

You first meet the Master Chief when he exits the cryo tube. You say good-bye when he goes back in.

Ajw34307, you're assuming the majority of this fanbase reads anything other than the Halo novels. It's apparent they don't.

Whilst I respect your views, I cannot abide by your dislike of 343, especially since we know so few details about the Reclaimer Trilogy.

Yes.

Though, as I've said every time someone mentions John's conclusion, I wouldn't say no to his fate clearly being that he's alive, however serving a far greater purpose far beyond human reach. Something similar to how Goku flew off with the eternal dragon (only, unlike Goku, 'Chief would never return). He would become a guardian of something ancient, following the Forerunner (or perhaps another unknown race) into the very far reaches of space.

If he does die, I wouldn't be disappointed or angered. I would only ask that it's truly affecting.

You know though, I've toyed with an idea for quite some time. At the end of Halo 6, Chief is damaged gravely, but the TO is defeated. Perhaps the Didact, or some other Forerunner character, lifts Chief up and carries him into a bright light.

And we never see Chief again. Pretty cliche as far as endings go, but at least anybody can be right.
