At the end of halo 2 i got the sense that the covenant were on their heels. They had just declared war on the elites which I thought were their backbone and I havent played halo 2 in a while but werent the grunts fighting the covenant as well? So how is it the covenant whomped the humans so badly?

All i can think is theyll release a book to explain what happens between halo 2 and 3 because im pretty lost. maybe somebody can help me.

In high definition baby!

The Elites, Grunts, and Hunters are just trying to survive from the Covenant.

-blam!- Rage

Here is my theroy. The prophets brought the brutes in right. Well I think the prophets were planning to replace the elites all along, they just needed a reason, the death of regret. So got a hell of alot of brutes and probably in halo 3 unveil another warrior. So I think that is why they are still strong, because I think brutes are more vicious than elites and stronger.

alright, ya i just didnt know if the question was answered and I had missed it. I really dont think the covenant could beat the humans after getting rid of most of their officers(elites) even if they did have the brutes to replace them. I think possibly some of the elites stayed on for some reason.

ugh....

the elites at Earth are a fleet that was not around High Charity... and htough it may have felt like days at the second halo, it wasn't that long... and Slipspace transmissions take aprox 8 hours to travel... So yeah the elites at earth don't know about it, and the cov have more then enough members to take over earth... plus it only takes a couple of those ships to wipe out the UNSC...

Do you feel what I feel, see what I see, hear what I hear?
There is a line you must draw between your dream world and reality

heres what im betting on for a story arc:

At some point in the story after Chief returns to a decimated Earth with covenant fleets swamping the place, a second armada arrives at earth that sends a friendly signal to the human resistance. Its the Elites' fleet, and they are here to help out the humans, now that they know the Halos are big, big trouble.

Chew on that for a while.

I've always wondered...how are the covenant so strong after what happened in First Strike, where two marines were able to blow up most of the covenant fleet? And how did the covenant lose the location of Earth?

The earth defense grid was already battered in halo 2 and the UNSC had been greatly weakened over 30 years of fighting with the Covies....yes, there is a civil war going on in the covenant but it would seem that the Covenant loyalists (Prophets, Brutes, Jackals, etc.) on Hight Charity enaged their slip space drives after most likely eliminating most of the elites. Covies probably met little opposition at earth. Remeber, the break in the Covenant has just begun and it is most likely that its news/effects both havn't spread much farther than High Charity.

in halo 1 we killed half the army n0. 2 we killed about a 10th and - the eiltes so they are pretty low on troops

One, their aliens, which makes them automaticly hella-cool, and they can reproduce like crazy, and two it's a video game. If the covenant goes away, wouldn't that mean that the story would end?

Well you can go both ways with this.

Yes the Covenant should be battered, the entire Covenant has just undergone a rebellion, pitting half of the Covenant against the other. Yes the Elites were the backbone of the Covenant but now it is clear that the Brutes haven taken over that role. The thing that should have hit the Covenant the most though is that they just lost their home planet, High Charity to the Flood. But..

No the Covenant should still continue to be strong, mabie not as strong as before but still stronger then Humanity. Their technology of course is superior to ours, but when you take it all in they just plain out number us. Imagine each race of the Covenant, they must all have a homeworld much like Humans have Earth. Grunts, Jackals, Elite, Hunters, Brute, Drones, Prophets each one having a home planet which then makes the loss of High Charity irrelivant. The Covenant government will probably just relocate to one of these home worlds.
