When you play Halo [or any game where you have troops at your disposal] do you feel compelled to keep as many of them alive as possible, or do you treat them like expendable assets?

Personally, I always try to keep as many friendlies alive as possible because:

A) They provide back-up in tricky situations [as well as having no limit on their ammo].

B] I simply feel it's the right thing to do; It mustn't be in my make-up to abandon or waste lives.

Perhaps, with attention to Halo, Bungie simply drew me into the universe and made me feel a part of something, made me care about my fellow man, computer generated or not.

I dunno.

Anyway, what about you?

In Halo 2 I always give my Allies better weapons especially my Elites and Grunts.

As for the Marines in Halo 2, as long as the Mexican Marine is alive I'm happy.

I should have pointed out the Covenant troops too! Forgot to include that, but the point remains the same :)

OT: You really don't find that you care to keep your fellow soldiers alive [bar the Mexican Amigo]?

"Halo! Its divine wind will rush through the stars, propelling all who are worthy along the path to salvation."

In Halo: When I have the chance.

In CoD: Meatshields. Many Meatshields.

In Battlefield 3: When I have the chance.

The Mexican Marine is the funniest marine IMO. That's why I keep him alive, to provide me with lulz and kills.

Well, truth be told, if I spent less time babysitting and more time murderising, I'd live longer and achieve my objectives faster, however, I like to play with some semblance of realism, as though I'm a part of the team or squad [helps with immersion]

Perhaps it really just is an individual trait.

Please don't hype for games...
They'll just fall short of your expectations and you'll complain for months.

I usually try to save them on easy on normal. On harder difficulties, I leave them for dead when I play seriously (ex. Assault on the Control Room on legendary) and can't afford to take the extra damage to save the marines. I honestly wish halo had a command system like republic commando. It'd make your marines more useful.

I am a whisper on the wind...

I try my best to keep them alive no matter the game. I see campaign as more of an RPG aspect.

  • 12.28.2011 8:26 PM PDT

Only if they're Johnson in CE or ODSTs.

Same here. I don't always succeed, but I try :)

I also agree with the post above you: A propper squad mechanic for NPC's would be an awesome addition to Halo, but the game would be a stand alone, rather than part of the main sequence; I'm thinking something like ODST.

Keep them alive in easy zones and then hopefully they will be usefull as meatshields and annoyances in the harder part of the missions

  • 12.28.2011 8:39 PM PDT

I like Halo games, nuff said.

I try to keep them alive as much as possible but bungie made it really hard in Reach because they suck at aiming, fire 2 round bursts from an AR, and have really low health...

Also, I honestly feel somewhat responsible for my marines on the battlefield as sort of their protector. My job is to protect humanity so I always try to do it. In some situations it makes me more aggressive in my fighting style so it someewhat helps me to complete missions faster. Plus bonus rifles firing ;)

True.

I felt less inclined to save them in Reach. I still tried, but I didn't really care that much. They were incredibly dull and useless in Reach. And they can't drive for nuts!

The way I see it, if you plan out your attack and use solid tactics then you should have slim to no casualties to speak of. Sure there are the uncontrollable factors, but for the most part its a sound mind and solid strategy that wins.

i do try. especially so in halo 3 / odst. it's nice to load 'em up with snipes and rocket launchers with infinite ammo hehe. unfortunately they tend to send themselves to slaughter, anyway. :/

maybe in a future halo, we'll be able to assign them spots to assault / cover, etc. i'd be cool with that.

Not really. I can't save allies who try to shotgun snipe, or kill themselves.

Usually, most of the time my marines live, with the exception of two or three dying. Harder parts they tend to die off.

This man, this man right here put it so eloquently that I actually cancelled my own 2000+ word long post.
/slow clap for respect

:)
The person who said participating is important, not winning, obviously never won anything.

Always.

I pretty much always give my allies better weapons, even if that means leaving me with weapons that arent as good.

I take very special care and attention with ODST's and Elites. I've dont it so many times that I've been able to beat levels on Legendary without loosing an ally. (Only counting ODST's and Elites. Marines just seem to die out of nowhere at times)

I acknowledge my user name is stupid. However, I promise I'm not.

Disclaimer: The latter is a lie.

In every Halo game, I have never found any AI to be helpful. If anything they put me at a disadvantage.

In CE, yes, I would do my best. In Halo 2, I gave em the best I could find.

In Halo 3, I gave them nothing, as on high difficulties they often looked down, pulled trigger. Oh yeah! I've got a prowler with two marines with rockets on the sides! Lets go kick some ass!

First sign of combat, look down, pull trigger.

It's almost like when playing on easy, your friendly AI is on Legendary, and when playing Legendary, your AI is on Easy.

I'm a stubborn guy. I love to argue my opinion, but unlike others, I'll try to see your side of the problem. I'm a triathlete, with a very heavy empephis on the swimming bit. Also, don't hate on the ~Quinton~ at the end of my posts. Why are you still reading this? #creeper #hashtagcashmoney for hashtaging on Bungie.net

I've always tried to save my allies. I believe I was playing through "The Ark" on legendary on Halo 3, my buddy and I saved all of the ODST's and gave them snipers, fuel rod guns, and rocket launchers. we piled them into two specters(don't quote me on that) and we just went to town, destroying everything in sire.
