Subject: Do you try and save your NPC comrades?

"This is the prototype NOVA Bomb, nine fusion warheads encased in lithium triteride armor. When detonated, it compresses its fissionable material to neutron-star density, boosting the thermonuclear yield a hundredfold. I am Vice Admiral Danforth Whitcomb, temporarily in command of the UNSC military base Reach. To the Covenant uglies that might be listening, you have a few seconds to pray to your damned heathen gods. You all have a nice day in hell..."

Halo is the only game where I try to keep the alive.

I try to save as many of them as I can indirectly.

If I see a -blam!-ton of Elites coming up a ramp towards my team mates I take them out.

If the Elites get to them, I try to save the ones that are being attacked, but in the end it's always me or them.

Saving them had advantages though.

Whenever I find Covenant weapons I give them to my team mates because then they can take down shields a lot faster. If there are heavy weapons around then I give them to them.

One example is when I was playing the third mission on legendary of the Reach Campaign. The one where you defend sword base. When you're driving around in the warthog it is a good idea to keep a marine alive.

The marines have perfect aim and unlimited ammo, so this is what I did.

I had Kat be the gunner, because then my gunner (who is the most exposed) would never die. Then I found a Concussion Rifle and gave it to the marine. I had the marine ride shotgun while I drive the Warthog because AIs can't drive for some reason.

After that I managed to take down three revenants and a wraith just by driving circles around them. When I found a fuel rod gun, I gave that to the marine, and we raped face.

My point?

Try to save your team mates. Sometimes it pays off.

This (and THIS) was for Reach...and/or Harvest

I usually try to save them on easy on normal. On harder difficulties, I leave them for dead when I play seriously (ex. Assault on the Control Room on legendary) and can't afford to take the extra damage to save the marines. I honestly wish halo had a command system like republic commando. It'd make your marines more useful.

DUDE! Quit reading my mind, a few of us have been agonising over the same thing since CE was released. Merely minimal commmands system, eg: Advance or retreat and/or regroup.
Man that would ROCK!

Ahem- as for the topic, yes I do all the time, as powerful as the weapons I have on hand. Preferably snipe/beam as they can't suicide and kill me with them. One of my absolute favourite aspects of the Halo series is infact the interaction with marines/ AI allies. The banter and the weapon swapping, it's awesome! Plus Tsavo highway with a TT warty and full of marines with rocky's on ledge, win.

So the general consensus is:

Most of us try to save friendlies.

We each have our reasons for why we try and save our team-mates, but does anyone feel compelled to save them?

^ Pointed out that the interaction between the Marines and the player is something that really shines out in most of the Halo games. Does this interaction help forge a bond between you and the NPCs?

I try my best to keep them alive no matter the game. I see campaign as more of an RPG aspect.

same even on legendary in reach during the level "the pillar of autumn" at the part after the cave (with the drones) I took all the damage for the marines and stuff, dunno why but I always do.

EDIT: also this

I should also reinforce:

This question isn't solely related to Halo. Other games where there is a friendly force providing assistance to the player also count. Citing examples would be wonderful as has been seen above :)
