Subject: "Question for the mods" threads

To put it simply, do you think they should be considered spam?

Personally, they irk me; logic dictates that if the OP has a question for the Mods and posts it in the Community, since we are not Mods, we can't actually answer the question. PM is better.

I don't think any thread particularly "clutters" this forum. If anything I support the Q4M threads because I myself will learn something from it most of the time.

  • 12.28.2011 10:36 PM PDT

I agree. They should PM one of the moderators. But what bothers me is the fact that you are worked up over a rare occasion that happens in this forum. I say just ignore it and let the moderators answer.

The bible is the best book Ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I AM A PROUD CHRISTIAN. HALO IS AWESOME BUT GOD IS MUCH BETTER!!!!!!!!
Did you knew that JESUSdied for you?

I don't dismiss normal user replies. With that title I imply that both questions are welcome (normal user and moderator) But I prefer the later if possible.

I agree with this too

Multiple mods will check the Community Forum throughout the day. The odds that at least one mod will see your thread and reply are pretty good, compared to your suggestion. You can never know which mods are on at any given time, so if you just start PMing random mods, you never know when your PM will get read, much less replied to.

You could always look for threads that were recently locked, see if a mod posted in it, and then PM that mod, but the mod could have recently got off for the day/night.

Well, the point I'm trying to make is that this is the Community Forum. If you have a question for the moderators specifically, why would you ask the general public?

Also, you could use ModStalk, but not everyone uses extensions so I'm not really sure if there's a solution to that problem.

I don't mind them as you can get an idea as to how each mod moderates the forum depending on what questions are asked and the replies given. They don't annoy me one bit.

@Helveck

Just an Average Joe...

How's this for a point...

People might sometimes post, "Question for the Mods", because they know their general inquiry might also be informative for other Members. So why not display the question and answer publicly, as so when it is there, it can educate others?

Not to mention also the fact that more than one mod can reply. Sometimes the answer may be a bit more educated or detailed/specific than an answer by another Mod. They can all chime in with their input and provide insight for the OP, and as I said, the rest of those who may also be curious.

That is why I joined the ask your ninja group. Some people might not think to use the pm method. Although someone who has been corrected might have the information the OP inquired about.

NOT ACCEPTABLE

I was talking to you. ModStalk shows active mods, so I was addressing the whole "we don't know who's active" part. :P

Not sure if ctjl is replying to me, and messed up the quoting, or if he's just saying that in general, and then quoting me below his post to show his support for what I said...

If anything should be considered spam, it's these constant threads pointing out inane things people want considered as "spam".

Questions for the Mods are welcome here, and should continue to be. Most questions benefit from the replies of several mods, which is why people post them here. It gives us a chance to flesh out and discuss the goings on here as it pertains to the rules and how we treat one another.

SPOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON!

I'd rather people PMed ninjas instead of making mod threads personally, though I can understand why some people wouldn't be familiar enough with us to do that. If you don't know which mod might actually be using the site, or if that mod usually even replies, then its easier to just make a topic.

I kinda preferred it when we locked all those kinds of threads. While most are valid questions, they still kind of feel like mod-bait threads, which I consider spam. That said, I don't mind not locking them now, I just preferred the old was on that one specific issue.

I still would leave some open though, if the question was rather general or if I thought other users would see it and clarify some policy or action. The one I'd imagine that caused the genesis of this thread for example, is a good one to leave open and allow the community to discuss, since I'm sure a lot of people had those same questions.

  • 12.28.2011 10:48 PM PDT

Who the hell do you think I am?

Well it would be great if people could just PM, but it's going to happen anyway...

  • 12.28.2011 10:49 PM PDT

Yeah, cam, I agree. Like, I'm alright with the ones that ask questions we can actually answer; it's the ones that only mods know the answers to that annoy me and those should probably be locked because if we can't answer it, it really doesn't have a place here.

Meh, I'm gonna do what's easiest for me. It's actually much more convenient to do it this way. We already have a thread for this, though.

I don't think you should ask a question (as a topic) directed at a single group of users, when you post the question where all users can see it (as it is spam to other users, if the original poster actually intends the question to be answered only by the small group of users); but I see no harm with the topics, since they're answered by all users anyway and usually strike discussion.

I actually agree, though I'd say 3 to 7 days is good enough. I do always approve of massive carpet bannings though~

There comes a time in every mans life... and that time is not now.

If i ever have something to say to a mod or an employee, i PM them directly. I don't fish for comments in the public forums hoping to gain some sense of popularity.

Yeah, they're spam. They don't promote discussion, and the vast majority of comments such a thread receives basically consist of people trying to answer/giving their opinions, or community members expressing that they would also like a mod or employee to comment. The more obvious 'employee please post in my thread' threads are the worst.

I'm not sure, maybe we should ask the mods what they think.
